Surprise! Jeff Goodman Leaves Auburn by Criticizing Kentucky

ESPN

Last night was the perfect night for ESPN’s Jeff Goodman to attend a Kentucky game.  In the middle of the longest losing streak of the Calipari era, the Cats entered Auburn as underdogs against the SEC’s top team.  The Kentucky-bashing column could write itself.

It started with a heavy-handed  “Calipari doesn’t have a Nerlens Noel excuse this time” and ended without providing much more substance that you already don’t know.  There’s quotes, schedule analysis and comparisons to past teams.  There are two passages that provide some insight you probably haven’t heard before:

“But this Kentucky team is missing something. No, it’s missing more than just one thing. There’s a litany of reasons why the Wildcats have struggled. The Dec. 29 shellacking of rival Louisville seems like an eternity ago, and this team no longer brings an intimidation factor that has been associated with those who have “KENTUCKY” on their jerseys….”

“…There’s no chip with these guys in Lexington. Maybe they’re too nice, too soft or too focused on making a brief pit stop before jumping to the next level. Whatever the case, Calipari hasn’t been able to get this group to play with the fire and intensity that has been his trademark over the years.”

It’s critical, but a fair analysis. All of those points are valid and probably true.  It just hurts to hear it coming from Jeff Goodman’s mouth.

ESPN: Is this John Calipari’s most disappoint team ever?

Love the Cats but certainly seems like a fair and accurate assessment. Nothing we haven’t all been saying and questioning for awhile now.

Wouldn’t this hurt more coming from someone that we actually like? No one should be surprised that Goodman wrote this. Given that, it’s a fair and spot on assessment of this team.

I think its a fair and obvious criticism, however mixed the motives may be. IMO the reality is that Cal just doesn’t have his pick of the very top players anymore, Krysxxvsssmmmmm is getting them, and therefore his overall approach is at a crossroads. He has been primarily focused on putting guys in the league and that worked in terms of winning games as long as enough of those guys were first rate studs, with a little experience from veterans. In the current situation, we don’t have studs, and yet we still have guys who want to jump immediately to the league. That just won’t work. IMO Cal’s overall approach is at a crossroads, and this team is just a symptom. He needs to tweak the overall approach, and not just this team. If he doesn’t, it will probably just be more of the same going forward.

It is what’s not being said that speaks volumes. In reality, this team’s upside is only limited by the attitude of the players, in a “me first” mind set.
Cal is correct. This team can do some damage, but the will to do so, is unavailable. Maybe they will start, I hope they do, but losing a couple more, will put them out of the tournament.
I think this is where we will see if the word “Kentucky” across their chests means anything, at all, to them.
    We will see.

I keep reading these “Cats are now at full strength” in articles.

Full strength would include Baker, whose dead-eye long range shooting has been a massive missing piece of the puzzle….

1 bad year? Hes had some brutal regular seasons. Numerous pros and 1 title. You guys are the reason we are gonna have terrible years here at the end of cals tenure because you wont state the obvious.

    • HashtagNoseWhistle
      4:26 pm February 15, 2018 Permalink

The obvious is that some so called fans are delusional to expect 10 pros and a national title EVERY single year. Who has won a title EVERY year for 10 plus years in a row??? No one. Don’t bring up UCLA. A real fan enjoys the plenty more years of good teams than a very little amount of bad teams. 2012-2013 and this year are the only bad teams we’ve had. Brutal regular seasons? How about March? Give me a break

Lord have mercy. “You guys are the reason we are gonna have terrible years here at the end of cals tenure because you wont state the obvious.” So stating the obvious on KSR message boards will make us have good years coming up??? LOLOLOL I highly doubt Mitch Barnhart reads the KSR message boards or even cares about the opinion of the 50 people who post on here.

It doesn’t matter how many pros he’s had, 1 title in 8/9 years is good. Just ask the other hundreds of schools who haven’t won one in that time frame if they’d like to have 1 out of 9. Those “pros” typically still have a lot to learn in the NBA

It just sucks because after ’12-’13 we had 5 of the top 11 players signed, just missing out on the number 1 player. This year we have 14th, 15th, and 35th best players signed. We just aren’t getting it done on the recruiting trail. Cal just doesn’t seem to have the touch anymore getting top-five talent. There’s basically no one left to get at the last minute in the class of ’18. I’m worried about the future of the program for the first time in Cal’s tenure as dumb as that sounds.

We always here how great the Big 12 is based on mediocrity but when the SEC gets 7-8 teams in its because we lack star power. Lol. These reporters are crazy. The SEC is projected to have the most first round picks and went 11-7 vs the Big 12. Oh, and when it’s dominated by star power teams at the top we get criticized for that too. Ridiculous.

To say that the team is at full strength is disingenuous. I see Goodman’s points, and I don’t disagree wholly, BUT, Jemarl Barker has played 0 minutes. Is he the savior, not likely, but a consistent threat from 3 changes some things.

That in itself is a significant point for a team lacking shooting. That kid isn’t a walk-on either. He was recruited as a shooter. Ignoring that is foolish.

Goodman is a creep and needs to spit out whatever is in his jaw. But, he correct! Can’t go against him. We stink and will probably end up in the NIT
