The Sun Herald caught us up to speed on the Southern Miss coaching search today, and though he’s still mentioned as a possible candidate, Kenny Payne’s name isn’t in the thick of things.
The newspaper reports Jay Ladner, a member of the 1987 Southern Miss NIT championship team, is a leading candidate. Ladner recently accepted the head coaching job at Southeastern Louisiana but a return to Hattiesburg may be too good to turn down. Stephen F. Austin’s Brad Underwood is considered the favorite, according to the report, with Jeff Goodman throwing Iowa State assistant Doc Sadler’s name in the mix.
Payne gets a mention at the bottom in the “other” category, but it’s looking like he’ll be back in Lexington for another season as Southern Miss focuses on other candidates.
