Southern Illinois coach tells Kentucky fans to back off players

As expected, Southern Illinois head coach Barry Hinson brought the heat to tonight’s press conference. Hinson, whose rant after losing to Murray State in 2013 is the stuff of legend, started things off by telling the Big Blue Nation they need to back off this young Kentucky team.

“You need to read the Book of Job. You need to have a little patience. Rome wasn’t built in a day. These guys are 18, 19, 20 years old. And you have children, children of your own. You want to microwave the maturation process and you can’t do that. It takes time, so back off and let these guys go through the maturation process and let John Calipari do what he does best and by March, you’re going to have something on the floor you can be really proud of.”

“You can’t microwave maturation,” Hinson added later. “No matter how much you stick Tyler Herro in a microwave, he’s not going to get older faster.

Hinson didn’t stop there, dropping gems about his team’s effort, WKYT’s Brian Milam’s excellent news reports, and the home cooking by the refs.

“I coached hard. I told the managers to get ready. The way the officiating was going, I thought we were going to have to check one of them in at times.”

My favorite line of the night came when Hinson was asked how his team could improve after tonight’s game.

“I’d really like to get a lot taller. We’ve gonna go work on that when we get back on the bus. We’ve got a bunch of these tall pills we’re going to start taking. They’re placebos but we’re gonna see if they work.”

LOL. Can we add this guy to the staff, please?

WE don’t want to microwave maturation. CAL is the one who tries to do that every single season, and then start from scratch again the next year. WE want some continuity so that players can mature in time and gain experience. The fact that a kid like Ashtan Hagans is a projected first round pick is what causes this nonsense year in and year out. In what universe is Hagans a one and done? He’s scared to pass, scared to shoot, scared of his own shadow. Kid needs two years, maybe 3. The fans know that. Lay off the fans. CAL has created this win now or bust culture

Sir without the fans like my grandpas dad uncle cousins aunt all the way down to my kids now, we would not have what we have. We are a vital part of the carte Blanche uk basketball program.

I want some of those tall pills for my 5’1″ volleyball playing daughter. Magbe then she can put on an extra foot of growing and make UK Volleyball’s roster. 😉

I love their coach, if for no other reason than his glasses make me think of Michael Douglas in “Falling Down”.

I hate it when coaches get on fans who spend hard earned money on tickets. I havent been to a uk game ever since they screwed over the season ticket holders

Spoken like person, fan, and coach, who does not comprehend the pressure of coaching and playing at Kentucky, who wouldn’t last a year coaching at Kentucky, who never has the ability to coach at Kentucky, and belongs at a school in southern Illinois that plays in the Missouri Valley… go home coach!

TT I hope you don’t think this is just for you because it’s for everyone that writes for this site!! Why, why, why do you guys write everything that’s said in a video and then show the video after??? God that just kills me and it’s every one of them. Why even show it ?? Just put the video first and if you need to write ‘word for word ‘ everything that’s said ,after, fine. I know I’m not the only one here that has thought about it because it was discussed before but , really why do you all do that? again this isn’t necessarily for you but your the only one who actually listens to people and would take advice. if it’s worth taking, of course. Lol. Anyway you do a great job and I love your work.

Well said NatureBoy, you are spot on. Cal is a tremendous coach.

Why is everyone getting mad at a coach who is speaking the truth. For all you so called knowledgablefans he has been in the business a long time and is speaking the truth. You think Cal doesn’t respect a guy like that who builds a mid major into a program that plays hard and competed with us. I’m no coach just a fan but I recognize he’s calling it like he sees it and he’s right. I’m so tired of whining from posters that probably never played past junior pro and say the bench then. We want to win but so does every other program out there. Don’t like Cal tell me who you bring in that can do what he’s done. Said it before I’ll say it again I trust my coach and I like my team.

He’s so spot on it’s not even funny. People mad cause he’s telling the fans how to fan, but most of our fans think they can tell coaches how to coach. Cal is a HOF coach, they don’t just give that out. Wait until March, this team will be right there with anyone.

Hall of fame coach with one national championship. 1 more than all of us reading this site.

1 more is 1 more than we could ever win. Which is why we are reading this site and Cal is HOF. One isn’t easy to win. If it were there’d be a lot more coaches with one.

That was duke and they smacked them and their girlfriends and kicked their dog and sat there while big blue traveled paid supported it. Garbage. I understand March but to lose to duke with freshman by 34 is nuts. Lose by 10 or 15 sucks but as long as you don’t quit. We can build on. Building with quitters is hard and by March the job may not get done with this crew.

Fans are supposed to be fanatics of the team not critics of every aspect. One and done and questioning cal then talking about players and how stupid they are (diallo last season) how about quit tearing down everything and supporting the team.

Exactly. The whole “Kentucky fans are the smartest basketball fans in the country” routine is getting old. Stop analyzing. Just be fans. Even their coach said the different in the game was the fans, but the fans didn’t make a noise until we started hitting a few shots. Until then they sat on their hands and criticized. It’s sad that Cal has to beg our fans to stand up for certain portions of the game. I think the fans make playing at Kentucky 10 times harder than it has to be, and not in a good way. Be supportive, be loud, be PRESENT (don’t start leaving with 10 minutes left in the game) and support these kids instead of tearing them down. If they play well when the fans are loud, then be loud at the times they need it most, not when everything is going our way.
