After missing out on Purdue graduate transfer Matt Haarms, Kentucky has reached out to yet another potential frontcourt option to close out the 2020-21 roster.

Sources tell KSR that UK assistant coach Joel Justus has been in recent contact with 2021 five-star forward Efton Reid, a potential reclassification candidate.

Clint Jackson of was the first to report the news.

Reid, a 6-foot-11, 225-pound center out of Richmond, VA, is considered the No. 14 prospect in ESPN’s 2021 player rankings. Rivals and 247Sports both have him listed at No. 27 overall, while the consensus top-five center is considered the No. 20 prospect in the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Reid currently holds 11 offers, with Louisville, Virginia, Georgetown, NC State, and Ohio State being seen as the strongest contenders in his recruitment. Kentucky has yet to extend an official offer, but they have been in touch dating back to last fall, with a member of the UK coaching staff taking a trip to Virginia for an in-home visit with the five-star center.

Sources tell KSR that Reid has been contemplating a jump to the class of 2020, as he has stated in recent interviews over the last several months. While the likelihood is unclear at this point in time, the Kentucky coaching staff is monitoring his situation should he decide to officially reclassify in the near future.

Check out a few of his highlights:

So did we contact him after Haarms chose BYU or had we been in contact with him previously? It’s an important distinction.

Has anyone reclassified and then been great when they got here?

Hagans was pretty great for a reclass

Hagans was an average player, not great.

      Outstanding defender
      Excellent free-throw shooter
      Good athlete
      Decent distributor
      Poor shooter
      Poor finisher
      Awful decision maker/turnover machine

I’d rather have a player who is “good” in all those areas rather than great in some and deficient in others. That’s what your point guard needs to be… steady and consistent. Not trashing Hagans, it’s just the facts. He was an average to below average point guard by UK’s standards.

Great > pretty great for a reclass.

I believe Karl Towns was pretty good.

Yep, KAT was originally 2015 class, and reclassified to 2014 class. Nerlens, Dakari, and Jamal Murray also reclassified.

I guess I don’t remember Hagans freshman year very well. If he was as defensively strong then as this year, that’s a good answer.

Good I feel more positive about reclassifiers. Didn’t remember about KAT, Noel and Murray.

Joel justus is fine but where’s Coach Payne when we’re looking for a big? Thought coach Payne had all the street cred.

Not downing the kid cuz maybe someone sees something I didn’t see because all I see is height and maybe a little bit of court vision on being able to rebound and immediately push. Kid is VERY RAW compared to an D-1 big. Best comparison is maybe Nick Richards or WCS at the same age. I’d think we’d be doing his a disservice to throw him into the SEC right now just because we’re a bit desperate for another big. But if he buys into being a practice guy that gets to improve that way, instead of actual game time, he’s an amazing addition. We just have a tendency of making guys feel like 5 stars equals NBA lottery pick and rarely do we get a Nick Richards that realizes 5 stars mean nothing and he’ll have to work for it and be patient.

Probably a better fit than Haarms.

Looking at his film I’d take him in the class of 2021. He needs more time to develop before he plays a game against SEC competition. Again, I’d love to have him, but I’d hate to see his confidence shaken so early in his basketball career. Once it’s shaken, it’s hard to fix.

I absolutely love U.K. basketball, am no expert on recruiting, but felt the need to vent a little. I apologize to the rest of you ahead of time. It certainly appears we are in desperation mode. And, SOMEONE needs to take responsibility. We were an injury to Nick Richards away in ‘19-‘20 from being in serious trouble. Yet, we had two or three vacant scholarships. Everybody has known for some time we likely needed a big man for ‘20-‘21. Yet, we let Cliff Omuruyi NOT feel the love and he commits to Rutgers of all places. Is he an Anthony Davis type guy……….seriously doubt that. If Elton Reid has any character whatsoever, he will stand by those who have recruited him the hardest and longest (and, regrettably that doesn’t appear to be U.K.). There is an old saying, “you’ve made your bed, now sleep in it.” It seems we will have possibly two to three more vacant scholarships for ‘20-‘21. I hope we learn something from that. I also hope our incoming freshmen are great at shooting and blocking out. I seriously doubt we will “out size” anyone.

It would feel really good to have Omoruyi in the fold right now. It definitely felt like he was ours for the taking.

The reason we are in desperation mode is because Cal has one pitch: “we’ll get you to the NBA quicker”. Problem is all these guys have figured out that if they are good enough, they’ll get there quick no matter where they go. And this problem has been compounded by the fact that the guys who aren’t ready either leave anyway or transfer out now. It’s a mess.

Get off your pedestal. “If he has any character at all, blah blah, freaking blah!”
If he has any character at all, he will do whatever he feels is best for him and his family!
Some of you guys could use a valium for chrissakes!

FLCat… I disagree with the character assessment. I think most us would consider moving on to a better job if we got an offer to do so. The kid has no allegiance till he’s signed. I get where you’re coming from, though. We need another big man.

What’s killing Kentucky is the media, letting the fans know who Kentucky is recruiting and talking too, all you guys are doing is Letting a bunch of our dumbass whiners know who to mess with on Twitter and whatever other social media sites these dumbasss get on.

Kids don’t want to be harassed all the time by people who pretend to be fans. We have a bunch of 40 year olds following high school kids, and when they don’t come here they cuss them out. Some of the blame is this site , rivals and other Kentucky sites who just want to make money!! All they’re doing is destroying Kentucky Basketball though!!

How about waiting until the day they’re supposed to pick a school and not give the perverted so called fans a chance to kill us. All you fans that follow kids, that tell them how bad you want them , you tell them how great they are, but then when they pick another school you all leave hate messages and tell them they suck and will never be heard from again. You all are the ones killing Kentucky Basketball!! Not Cal, not the regular fans!! YOU!!! This site is playing its part as well by pointing the kids out for you.

I got a great idea,! If you’re over 25, get the fucccck of Twitter and all the other sites to help you burn Kentucky Basketball to the ground.
