So… apparently UCLA is considering Rick Pitino for their head coaching job

Getty Images

Could the folks out in Westwood make a deal with the devil?

There have been differeing reports regarding where support for the former Louisville coach is coming from, but it seems pretty clear that someone at UCLA is endorsing Rick Pitino for the job once held by the considerably more honorable John Wooden.

Forbes’ Adam Zagoria reported Friday that Casey Wasserman and John Branca, two top UCLA boosters, both want Pitino for the job. Bruins Nation has since published a conflicting story stating Wasserman isn’t actually interested in a coach who once oversaw a hooker-hiring program.

Pitino’s own words in the Courier Journal would indicate that he has interest in the position. While at first he seemed pretty content to stay in Greece, when the 11-time national championship winning program was brought up, his mood shifted:

Pitino, now coaching in Greece for the EuroLeague’s Panathinaikos OPAP, initially scoffed at the scenario.

“Not going to happen,” he said via text message on Wednesday. “When Louisville fired me without waiting, my fate was sealed.”

Yet later that same day, the possibility of being contacted about the UCLA position plainly piqued Pitino’s interest.

“Hope so,” he wrote. “It’s a great job.”

[Courier Journal]

At this point, it’s still safe to call the odds of UCLA picking Pitino slim to none. But the Bruins weren’t exactly afraid to court controversy with the Ball family in recent years, so I guess anything is possible.

New rivalry, anyone?

Hookers are probably more expensive in LA than the ‘Ville.

As they should, he’s a great coach. What happened at Louisville was terrible, but he also had close to 30 years of coaching experience where there wasn’t scandals. I can’t stand him on a personal level, but he’s a hell of a coach.

Very mature thing to say. Unusual for this comment section. I totally agree.

Rick would be a home run hire for them . I am a huge Kentucky fan and I remember what he did for our program most of you all are too young to remember . Don’t get me wrong I don’t like Rick . He’s arrogant narcissistic, and dilusional however the man can coach. I know people on Louisville’s old staff rick did not know about some of the things going on . He deserved to be fire but he also deserves to coach again . If I were an AD at UCLA he would be number 1 in the list despite his flaws and faults

I totally agree. Rick is flawed, no doubt. And any university president and AD that hired him would face 6 months or more of intense negative scrutiny by the press and fans. But once the season started, and especially if they win early, Rick’s team would be an instant media darling (draw). They’d be on all the time and the buzz would be incredible. At the end of the day, wins are really the only thing that really matters.

Still the possibility of NCAA “show cause”. If they hire him, then what?

Are you people serious? It has zero to do with how good quick rick did at uk. It has nothing to do with how many games he has won or how well he can draw up a play. The guy was the mastermind behind 2 of the biggest scandals in decades. They vacated a national championship. How don’t you understand the severity of that? Also, if you think Ricky p didn’t know about and facilitate those scandals….you are a special kind of stupid, even more so if you were on his staff. Sheeesh.

I have no idea if this will happen, but there is currently no “show cause” for Pitno. Might be wise for them to go ahead and press the trigger if this is going to happen.

This is exactly what should not happen if we hope to build a society on character. The criminal justice system won’t punish the 1%, and society is happy to look the other way when someone wants to reward that bad behavior with another 1% job. Capitalism encourages promotion of the greedy and unscrupulous as long as they bring in the money/wins. If society doesn’t keep pressure on character, then we’ll have 99% of the money and power in the hands of greedy, unscrupulous people.

so it is greedy to let people keep miney freely given to them in exchange for goods/services (capitalism), but not greedy for those with nothing to demand the government take from others on their behalf (socialism). grow up, imbecile.

If Pitino went to UCLA they’d win the Pac-12 in his second year and be top 10 nationally with title aspirations in his second. We can all say what we want about his character but the fact is, the man can flat out coach.

    • StillBP
      5:38 pm January 6, 2019 Permalink

If he’s such a great coach then why did it take him 12 years to win a title at Louisville? He’s a good coach but his ‘great’ years were in the 90s.

    • dkcr96
      5:51 pm January 6, 2019 Permalink

The ignorance of this comment is impressive, 98% of teams would take a ncaa title every 12 years.

    • IndianaSucks
      6:18 pm January 6, 2019 Permalink

StillBP, I didn’t use the word “great” one time in my post but since you brought it up. He’s a top 5 coach all time in my opinion and a top 10 coach all time in everyone’s opinion that isn’t StillBP. Cal only has one title in almost 10 years so he should just GTFO by your standards, huh?

    • bigblue2284
      8:03 pm January 6, 2019 Permalink

Stillbp want to bet Cal doesn’t have more than 1 if he stays 12 years and he’s had a hell of a lot more talent than Pitino.

    • StillBP
      9:16 pm January 6, 2019 Permalink

Dkcr just bc “98%” would take a championship every 12 years that doesn’t mean greatness. Everyone keeps saying he’s a great coach. If you think 1 in 12 is great, then okay, so be it. I think it’s good but not great.

Sucks you didn’t use the word ‘great’ but everything about your comment eludes to that. Sorry if you’re a child and need the exact word used. Cal has 1 in “almost” 10…well he had one 7 years ago that is not even close to 10, let alone 12 like Rick. good lord, talk about fuzzy math.

Big blue I’ll bet he wins one in the next 5 if he’s still coaching, since he won one 7 years ago that gives him 5 more to equal what it took Ricky boy

    • IndianaSucks
      11:56 am January 7, 2019 Permalink

That’s weird, by your poor excuse for math, Pitino won a championship in 2013 and Cal was the year before so therefore Pitino has 1 in the last 5 years to Cal’s 0??? I’m sorry it’s hard to keep up with stupidity. And if Pitino isn’t a great coach, why did we spiral out of control for 10 years after he left? Don’t bring up 98. Those were Pitino’s players. How about you get out of your mom’s basement and make something of yourself. Just stay away from any history or statistics type careers. Good luck to ya buddy boy.

Also his only championship since the 90s was vacated, so 12 years or not it doesn’t even count. So this guy who can flat out coach and is one of the greatest coaches to everyone in the world except me hasn’t had a championship in over 20 years lololol

Like him or hate him, he came to UK exactly when they most needed him. Had he never come here, it’s possible Kentucky would still have only 5 NCAA titles. Many people reading this weren’t around in 1989 and have no idea how much disarray there was with the probation.

I’ve said it over and over don’t like rick now but did and loved his style. He will win wherever he goes! Hope it’s not UCLA for our sake bc he’s gonna give them 5 great years out of 6or 7 that they will sign him for. Don’t think there’s a bigger name coach out there you can get! We will be chasing UCLA for a while I think. But when I’m 80 and we finally do how sweet it will be. I’m 34 now so yea gonna be a while!!!

Pitno is a shell of his former self. I don’t hate him, but I would be shocked if he wins another title if he end up at UCLA. If media attention is their goal, Pitno is their guy. It just might not be the right kind of attention is all I’m saying.

The man was 2-8 versus Cal since Cal has been at UK, Cal must be an amazing coach which he is. Rick didn’t know my ass he set it all up both the stripper partys and the paying of Bowen. Remember he knew everything going on in Minardi Hall even if a picture was crooked or a chair leg was broken. What’s so funny is according to Ricki boy they had a security system that could see every corner of Minardi Hall but when ask for the tapes during the stripper scandal the system was broken for 2 years, roflmao on the idiots who believe that or worry about punctuation.
