Skal Labissiere is the next up in CoachCal.com’s summer “Meet The Wildcats” feature. Today, the website shared its interview with the projected first overall pick in next year’s NBA Draft.
The interview focuses around Labisseire’s childhood tragedy, when he and his mother and brother were trapped underneath their collapsed home during Haiti’s catastrophic earthquake in 2010. Death toll estimates range from 100,000 to 160,000, but he and his family survived.
“To see where I am today, where God put me today, I believe that everything happens for a reason,” Labissiere said of the quake that nearly killed him. He believes it sped up the process to get him to the United States, where his basketball career took off shortly after he arrived.
Definitely take a second to watch the interview for more vivid details from Labissiere regarding the earthquake. There’s plenty about his first months in Lexington this summer, too.
