Skal Labissiere ranked the #1 center in college basketball

The Sporting News’ Mike DeCourcy wrapped up his positional rankings this morning by breaking down the top 10 centers in college basketball. As you might expect, Skal Labissiere came in at #1.

“There are veteran college big men whose size, strength and knowledge will cause him problems, but there aren’t many,” DeCourcy writes. “And none of them owns the same degree of mobility and skill as Labissiere. The questions for Labissiere are these: how fast does he get it, and can whatever ‘it’ he masters hold up under big-game pressure?”

All valid questions, the former of which I feel pretty confident about after Derek Willis told reporters that Skal’s picking “it” up faster than anyone he’s seen during his time at Kentucky.

“You can tell he’s offensively talented,” Willis said of Skal. “Defensively, coming out of high school that’s just something that people don’t really key in on, and now it’s like, ‘Here, that’s what we do.’ He’s picked it up quicker than really anybody I’ve seen the past two, three years here.”

A recap of where UK’s guys ranked in DeCourcy’s series:

  • Point guard: 7. Tyler Ulis
  • Small forward: 1. Jamal Murray
  • Power forward: 7. Alex Poythress
  • Center: 1. Skal Labissiere

Not too shabby.

Looks like we are going to win the NBA draft again. Hang another banner.

Tyler Ulis appears to be severely underrated.

Yeah, I thought Tyler would be #1.

Ulis does seem to be underrated as I’ve heard a few people say they think he’s the best PG in the country … their lists are just kind of odd, though, with how they categorized some guys. Murray a SF? Diallo a C?

His size puts him in this position. I am glad we got him. He is a great college player.

Agree with UKBlue, I would assume his size affects his ranking a bit. But you can’t put a lot of stock into these kinds of list… Ulis is going to dominate this year. I like my team.

Ulis’ ONLY weakness is his size on the defensive end of the court, but it’s significant when we’re facing a big team such as Wisconsin. I’d still take him over anybody else on that list just because of his intangibles.

his size puts him at that position? you think 6’4″ is a normal size for a SF? no wrong answers here, just difference of opinion

I’m just glad they decided to overlook his handlers pay to play money scandal. This kid deserves to play and will be good for us.

Son, it’s time you found a job and moved out of our basement. And pull your damn pants up.

With all the bias in the media against UK, I’ll gladly take DeCourcy’s pro-UK tilt. He loves us.

I hope the chemistry is good this year. If so, it’s going to be a fun year.

Name me 6 guards that are better than Ulis. Absolutely no way.

Agreed. When I said the same yesterday I got accused of being a UK homer. (Which I proudly am.)

I take Ulis too as the best but gee Skal looks so skinny I hope he can play without injury. I like my team too. This year will be more fun than last year simply because we know we will lose some games but be really really good by tournament time.

Anthony Davis was skinny too, but I think that all worked out just well.

“The Rest of the story” likes to comment about things he doesn’t really understand, and then pas them off as facts.

He also thinks Stoops should be fired halfway into his third year….

Do we get a 2G in the top ten?…….(if Murray stays rated as a SF)

No need for me to defend or promote Ulis here. He’ll do a perfectly good job of that on the court.
