SI nails it: “Louisville created and continues to nurture dangerous culture for women”

For years, the University of Louisville has had a major problem with the way its athletic program deals with women. What do you expect when its two major coaches, Rick Pitino and Bobby Petrino, have a sordid history with women, the former an affair with a woman in a restaurant that resulted in him paying for her abortion and being extorted, and the latter an affair with an employee that resulted in him getting fired. And now, the partially-confirmed allegations that a Louisville staffer paid for prostitutes to entertain players and recruits, some of which were underage.

It’s sad that it took a scandal like this to open the national media’s eyes to the problem. Sports Illustrated’s Michael Rosenberg took Louisville to task this morning for “teaching its male athletes that women can be used and discarded.”

We keep looking at this story about prostitutes through the wrong lenses. We see it as players having casual sex, which goes on everywhere. Or we wonder what the NCAA will do. We’re missing the point. If Louisville is guilty, the school has created a dangerous environment for women, and it has opened itself to lawsuits from all angles.

What about seeking out Devonte Fields and offering him a scholarship after he punched his girlfriend? What is interesting and fairly sad is that UL has many professors, students and season ticket holders that are women, mothers daughters etc and they don’t really seem to care. Where is their outrage? When does a fanbase, faculty or student body reach the point of taking a stand?

This is an excellent point about Devonte Fields. Moreover, I’d be interested in all of the football and basketball players who have transferred in or permitted to remain enrolled at Louisville after committing sexual and/or violent offenses against females during the reign of Jurich. Ultimately, it matters none. Pitino will be regarded a legend for winning national championships at multiple schools, Petrino is invincible, and Jurich will be bolting soon to Texas (or somewhere similar) where he will make three times the salary he currently makes. The NCAA punishes student-athletes and schools, never coaches or administrators.

This is absolutely absurd. There are a few despicable acts that have taken place in the athletic department, but for SI to title this story “Louisville created and continues to nurture dangerous culture for women” is absolutely absurd and completely misleading. In fact, The University of Louisville is by far ranked the safest major University in the state— A ranking in which UK only ranks ahead of UPike and Kentucky State.

    And for you…
I’m absolutely disgusted how humored and entertained you are by this whole situation.

“It’s only 104 pages, and although it can be hard to read at times, the parts about Katina and her girls going to the UofL dorm make it a page-turner.

    E-book: $9.99 on Amazon
    Butter Lovers Microwave Popcorn: $3.98/12-pack”

“if taking joy in this makes you a bad person, we’ll party in hell together.”

I’M GLAD YOU THINK A GROWN WOMEN SOLICITING HER UNDERAGE DAUGHTERS FOR PROSTITUTION IS FUNNY.

You are clearly a hypocrite and care nothing more than to bash Louisville and get as much entertainment as you can from such a terrible situation. This is much bigger than sports or a rivalry.

You have no class, and I’m sickened by you finding this entertaining. Enjoy burning in hell.

Get off your high horse Louisville student. If this were happening at UK Louisville fans would be delighting in it. All I’ve heard for the last 6 years are that Cal is a cheater and UK’s banners will come down. Well, now the shoe is on the other foot.

there is no sense trying to talk sense into these hypocritical UK fans. The writers of this page pander to the willful ignorance of the UK fanbase who will gobble up piss in their cheerios if matt jones pours it in there. And then tell you how delicious it is. When i come to this page the thought that crosses my mind prior to doing so is, “i wonder what these bigots/assholes are talking about today”

its sad but true, whether drew and tyler believe what they put in print is neither here nor there. the fact that they print it, knowing that it appeals to backward thinking racist rednecks who will lap up anything they say, just to make money and a name for their website is truly disgusting.

and another thing, IT IS KSR. not LSR. they bash UL fans for caring about UK, but none of our major blogs give them any coverage. maybe once a month. even in a down time of year, there is at least one mention of UL in a negative light on the first page whenever i check the sight out. talk about insecurity. maybe you wouldn’t be so insecure if you had more than basketball to cheer about

Your outrage should be directed towards the perpetrators of these acts, not the media outlets that choose to report/comment on such ridiculous travesties.

As a UofL undergraduate alum I am ashamed and embarrassed by the decisions of the athletic department and administration over the past 10 -15 years. The chemistry, biology and math departments were great for my education and career but unfortunately none will see a penny of donation money from me as long as the current administration and athletic leadership remains in place.

You Card fans are so stupid that you think the act of making fun of the athletics program at UL is worse than the act itself. Please get over yourselves. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter if the girls were 17 3/4 years old or 18 years old. Focus on the fact that the “win at all costs” mentality at UL really does have costs. The cost in this case is hookers in the basketball dorms, and the crushing NCAA penalties forthcoming. Your athletics department is a dumpster fire and it has nothing to do with how everyone, including UK fans, saw it coming and are now laughing at you.

I’m interested in hearing your defense of your position. You say that the headline is misleading…in what way? The author of this article clearly indicates that the issue is the culture and mentality that has become increasingly prevalent in college athletics. He also argues that the manner in which UL has conducted itself over the past decade plus does nothing but encourage that mentality. That’s a hard argument to refute. And no one is delighting in the fact that this horrible woman pimped out her daughters, or that grown men would condone and pay for such things…it’s sickening. What is entertaining is the irrational portion of your fan base(there are plenty of rational ones as well) that continues to somehow try to spin this situation or muddy the waters; or worse yet, continue to throw out ‘these are just allegations from an untrustworthy source’ arguments. What is entertaining is that we joke about the lack of class, etc in the UL administration often, and now those jokes are being shown to, in fact, be true! It’s equal parts sadness in seeing innocent people get abused, and hilarity because of UL fans’ continued attempts to just look the other way!

Then you rehire a football coach that basically took a dump on your program when he left and then had his own sex scandal where he lied to the police and the school. Arkansas then fired him. IMO, and everybody’s got one, it tells people that your school doesn’t care how you treat women and that culture has trickled down to the players. I agree with you that it is terrible that underage girls were involved. Louisville has made their bed and now that they will have to sleep in it.

What is sad is that the UL fan base is standing around supporting any of these clowns. If this happened anywhere on a college campus – administration, academic departments, medical schools – the entirety of the staff and faculty would be summarily dismissed. With no questions asked.

The only thing that makes this an issue is the money associated with the program and the overall winning percentage of Pitino. That is the very definition of win at all costs.

You admitted yourself that the whole thing is disturbing and disgusting. All you need to do now is take the other step and realize that there HAS to be a change in personnel or you will have (unwittingly) reinforced the behavior. That’s it. You either care about the morally-corrupt behaviors, the lives that were impacted and the illegal nature of what was going on in your athletic department or you don’t. There is no in-between. And the decision to support a coach and AD that allowed this to happen places you squarely in the latter.

This narrative is overkill and unsubstantiated…

None of the women involved with the coaches previous decisions or players were put in dangerous situations from the details that have been presented. Well, other than Petrino wrecking a motorcycle… but that’s transportation choices and not part of the narrative being attempt here.

Media uses the word ‘dangerous’ in this situation to sell tickets to the show (that includes you Tyler by quoting it).

    The women:

    —–Pitino’s Affiar:
…..Karen Sypher – An adult who chose to ‘play for pay’
…..Pitino’s wife – An adult who was cheated on. We don’t know the full story here so I’ll leave it at that.

    —–Petrino’s Affiar:
…..Jessica Dorrell – The girlfriend climbing the ladder in the UA athletics department
…..Petrino’s wife – An adult who was cheated on. We don’t know the full story here so I’ll leave it at that.

    —–Breaking Cardinal Rules:
…..Katina Powell – An adult who sold a service and enjoyed the power it gave her. Made money off story.
…..Daughter 1 – An Adult. Mom brought them into the ‘be with basketball stars’ & ‘even get paid to do it’ dream
…..Daughter 2 – An Adult. Mom brought them into the ‘be with basketball stars’ & ‘even get paid to do it’ dream
…..Daughter 3 – Underage. Mom brought them into the ‘be with basketball stars’ & ‘even get paid to do it’ dream.

    ———————————————————–

Louisville Basketball is culpable for a program ‘out of control’ regardless of if Pitino had any knowledge of ‘paid girls for players’. But the ‘dangerous’ bit is unproven as is the ‘continues to’ line in the SI sentence.

By putting her children in a situation where money was exchanged with an underage girl will likely put Katina Powell in jail (regardless of the justification, “these are the guys my girls wanted to be with and I encouraged and facilitated their connecting under the premise they were the most popular athletes in town and had the most potential (in regards to guys my girls could get the attention of) to be wealthy some day”).

If anything the SI title should be (click bait cleaned):
Louisville had a program that was out of control and broken the law with women who aren’t concerned about it.

    • papasnapper

I think you’ve missed the point. He is questioning the culture of teaching young men that women are only objects to be played with and dismissed. NOT what I would teach my children or grandchildren, nor want them to be taught while under another adult’s guidance.

    • Booby Petrino
      1:41 pm October 9, 2015 Permalink

overkill and unsubstantiated? It is dangerous for women when men in powerful positions (ie coaches who young men look up to) teach young men that women are nothing more than sex objects. Rick, Bobby, and even Jurich are men of power and have done nothing to show that they respect women, and have only done the opposite. It is extremely dangerous. Rape and abuse of women come from men who weren’t taught to respect women. It comes from men who were shown that women are nothing but objects for them to control. One women even lost her job at UofL for speaking out against that culture. But hey, it wasn’t your job so let’s just call it overkill for her to be upset about that. So your headline “Louisville had a program that was out of control and broken the law with women who aren’t concerned about it” does not apply to all women discussed in the article. She cared, and she lost her job.

But yet you are suprised something like this happened, and that no way Rick could possibly know. The article hit the nail on the head, you guys created this culture, pitino and Petrino, all the thugs kicked out of various schools for various rules/crimes. It’s not all some big coincedence, U put winning at all costs as the most important thing of ur program and it did well for a few years U became relevant in football and basketball again, and we all know about ur rifle shooting dominance. But it was only a matter of time with the jurich/pitino/Petrino dream team that it all came crashing down. What’s astonishing is that they all come out publicly supporting one another immediately instead of looking into these issues and why they’re happening. Good post, Bobbum! Loserville fans are rightly upset because they know their sports department is on fire with a heat so hot nothing can be done to save it! If they hadn’t seen success with either of those two coaches they would be all for cleaning house to get rid of the bums. It hurts when the truth comes out sometimes especially when they have invested so much time propping up their sordid ways while trying to tear down UK. It is time to call trumps of that game and those of us who despise all things Loserville are collecting chips. SI sells magazines and make much of their money by writing articles condemning programs like UL. The know they are dead in the water, their ship is listing taking on water faster and faster, there are no lifeboats or lifelines for them. Visualize this Loserville fans: pizza place practically empty, chicken house filled with a stench they can never forget. No, it isn’t the SI article or the venom spewing forth from all programs who hate UL it is from their knowledge they have been rooting for a facade of greatness. The facade has been opened and inside is nothing but corruption, rotten corruption so bad they have to search legal pages to find football recruits and have to hire escorts to land basketball recruits, but now even that avenue for success is on fire.

If it’s so disgusting take it up with the university, I dan assure U if jurich and company feel the heat from the fan base something will happen. But let’s be honest here, it’s not about that, it’s about redirecting blame and somehow still coming after UK fans

Hey Tyler, from a distance I agree with the general scope of the SI article. However, I would suggest-an it is hardly original-that Louisville’s “behavior” here is generally part of a much broader cultural pattern, and that KSR routinely participates in this pattern by posting endless pictures of “beautiful” coeds and all of the accompanying sexual innunedo-Drew is obviously the worst. So, whatever Louisville has done in this case, careful self-examination and meditation on one’s own flaws, rather than schadenfreude, is probably the higher moral road to take here. But we all know that doesn’t sell of drive traffic to a site, just like lacking an angle or advantage doesn’t help you win in recruiting. I am not judging you, KSR, or anyone-just raising a point. Best to you……….

Im a fanatical UK fan and but I hate to see something like this happening, even at UL. This will ultimately damage the UK-UL rivalry because it is going to severely diminish their ability to be competitive for probably the foreseeable future. Obviously though if this is true, and it appears to be heading that way, they have to and should be punished. That said, I do not see how UL “continues to nurture a dangerous environment for women”. All of these women involved in these scandals were well aware of the situations and were willing participants, so why do they get portrayed as the victims? The woman involved in the Petrino scandal was also cheating on her spouse, whom I believe also worked at Arkansas, I mean obviously Petrino is the public figure but is he any worse of a human being than she is? I don’t see how. The woman in the Pitino scandal attempted to extort him, she was well aware of who he was and sought to profit off of it. No you don’t get to play a victim card there, have fun in prison. As far as the basketball team situation, again, these women were well aware of what they were doing and were willing participants. Im not saying that it is okay and they shouldn’t be punished, Im just saying that the women aren’t victims in any of these situations. Certainly I am not condoning extra-marital affairs and soliciting prostitutes or implying that the men involved in these should not realize consequences, but if you’re going to make me choose between the lesser of two evils and the options are two people/groups that willing participated in the same unsavory acts, but one decided to sellout the other in an attempt to profit off of it, the one who attempted to profit is the sh!ttier person and bigger scumbag.

I disagree with wanting UL to be a rivalry. I want them to be so bad they would be scared to play division 2 schools. I am gleeful IU is still working their way out of their problems. I hope UL never recovers. We can pick another program to hate where we don’t have to be confronted by fans like UL has at work or on a daily basis.

This thread sure got out of hand!

The Louisville student was completely out of order with the abusive posts to Mrs. Thompson. As she pointed out, she did not write the article. The scandal is newsworthy regardless of who you are. She merely pointed us to the latest article on it.

Likewise, the article itself was over the top. To take a few sordid incidents and draw the general conclusion that UL is creating and continues to nurture a “dangerous culture for women” is nothing short of hyperbole. The writer is playing on the hysteria of sexual assault on college campuses. As a college administrator, I know the statistics and I know that the generally accepted “fact” that one in four college women have been a victim of sexual assault is based upon bogus data.

By no means am I belittling the issue of sexual assault on college campuses. However, it has been vastly overstated as a dreadful new epidemic. The article writer compounds this hysteria by overstating his argument and engaging in a complete non sequiter.

BTW… been bleeding blue for 40 years so don’t accuse me of being a UL troll.

Oh you were certainly belittling sexual assault. So it doesn’t happen 1 in 4 (according to you)… But guess what… 1 in 100 is still too many. 1 in 1,000 is still too many. One is too many. Men in influential positions want to pay for strippers and prostitutes for 17/18 year old kids, that definitely sets an example that women are sexual objects; and it’s also illegal to pay for sexual acts, so let’s show the kids that laws don’t matter as long as you’re an athlete. That’s certainly dangerous for females when men are shown that women are sexual objects and laws don’t matter. Let’s add in the fact that the female track employee was fired for complaining about sexual discrimination, which again shows that females need to keep hush when males want something their way.

You missed the whole point. I’m not saying that sexual assault is not a problem or that these events did not take place.

But to make the leap from that to “creating and nurturing” a culture of danger across an entire university is a non sequiter.

This whole situation is sad to me. But it just as sad to me how some people, including some on this site (which i love and have read for many years) seem to think it is funny to pile on. It is not at all and it doesent make us look any better. I also keep hearing that Lousville fans would treat us the same way if this were reversed. That might be true, but I for one dont want to be just like the numerous louisville fans we constantly complain about, and i wouldnt think many of you would either. as for the article itself i agree completely with WillB above. seems to be a nice way to generate clicks though.

I appreciate those who try to to show their ethical side by taking the moral high ground and lash out at those who have used this tragic opportunity to give back much of what they have received. It is not funny now to Louisville fans, not should it be. If anyone believes this article uses only a few incidents to weave the sordid tapestry Louisville athletics is now mired in, you truly have no clue. Every year there has been a sex scandal at Louisville.
    That, too is not funny.
What is funny, is the Louisville fans inability to see their program built with no integrity, and then being shocked something like this has happened. I am sure it could have been worse, but from where I am standing, underage females, used for sex, paid for by coaches, to recruit under age boys to au basketball, is about as low as it can possibly get.
Why not? You have a coach that performed lewd acts and paid for an abortion, really brave thing there, and you have another coach, who put his mistress on the payroll, and lied to everyone about it, who also is about as low a character as you can get. Further, said coach brings in a guy dismissed for beating up a woman.
I think it is funny they are mad now. Not before, but now.
Or really, is it a tragedy? Depends on how you perceive it.
Coaches did this. The athletic department condones this. You fans of Louisville football and basketball supported this. You did nothing about it.
The fact you let this evolve to the sickening mess you have now, is on you. Not the sports writers, or the bloggers of this site. It is on you. That is the comedy and that is indeed, the tragedy.

KSR is playing all sides. You don’t get to treat this story like Christmas came early then suddenly act righteously indignant at such poor treatment of women by UofL. Your attitudes, led by Matt Jones’ giddiness, have been embarrassing to the UK brand and now you want to act like the purveyors of right living. Give me a break. Believe it or not you can be a UK fan and find none of this story at all amusing. KSR is a fine example of the kids running the daycare.

LOUISVILLE STUDENT… What do you mean safest campus. UL is in the hood. You have street walkers working on campus. Your defensive end is a chick beater. Petrino is one away from a sodomy of a minor charge. WTH is wrong with you? I think it’s absurd you think your safe. Run for your life and take your student loan with you.
