Rupp Arena gets final approval for renovations

The $15 million renovation plans for Rupp Arena got the final thumbs up today from the Urban City Council. The council approved the borrowing of 15 millie from the Lexington City Corps to make technological upgrades throughout the arena.

Of the many new features you will find in Rupp next season, a new center-hanging scoreboard will be the biggest. That means we get Big Bertha for one last season before she is replaced by a bigger and brighter centerpiece.

Let’s take a walk down memory lane with Bertha in these photos from her construction back in the 1970s, shared on Rupp Arena’s Facebook page. Click on the photo below to see more:

Enjoy her while she’s here, BBN. It’s been a long and memorable run.

Good riddance to BB. The audio quality especially during the into video played at each home game is ear-piercing. It was a novelty 40 years ago but today is just an eyesore (and earache).

Couldn’t agree more. As long as they don’t replace it with one of those basketball-catching video boards like they have at Arkansas, I’m good with whatever else they put up there.
