Rick Stansbury is Texas A&M’s new top assistant

After two seasons away from the game, Rick Stansbury is returning to college basketball as Billy Kennedy’s top assistant at Texas A&M. The former Mississippi State head coach spent 14 seasons in Starkville, where he is the Bulldogs’ all-time leader in wins, before he was fired following the 2012 season. Now he’s packing up his maroon ties and heading to College Station.

Stansbury is from Battletown, Ky. and attended Campbellsville University, so we know he’s good people.

Mississippi state’s loss is A&M’s gain.

Guarantee it is a coaching-in-waiting position. Billy Kennedy has Parkinson’s and will probably retire in the next few years.

And a wise move on A&M’s part.

Pretty much has to be the case as he is and has been one of the most capable former head coaches on the market. I’m sure getting a new gig at the top would be no problem. Either, as you said, he is coach in waiting or just tired of that kind of pressure. I get the feeling Mississippi State made Stansbury their Fulmer. Good luck putting that program back together.

Stansbury always hated losing to UK. It’ll be fun to beat him again. Great recruiter, horrible leader.
