Rick Pitino told a joke today. It made me laugh. He said, “We’re here to build up the image of college basketball.”
The full comment, made to Terry Meiners on Meiners’ radio show, was, “You know, Terry, whether it’s Duke last month or whether it’s now us this month, these type of comments –you know, we’re here to build up the image of college basketball, not tear people down.”
Of course, Pitino was talking about John Calipari and some of Calipari’s recent comments. We’ll hear plenty more about the coaches’ back-and-forth in the coming days — including a possible rebuttal from Cal during tomorrow’s pre-draft teleconference — but I’m here right now to make sure you all get your laugh out of Pitino saying he is building up the image of college basketball.
May I remind you, this is a man who is currently awaiting his program’s punishment for hiring prostitutes for parties in the basketball dorms. This is man who flipped off the home crowd after one of the biggest, most visible games of the sport’s regular season. This is a man who impregnated a woman in a restaurant and then paid for the abortion.
But he’s building up that image of college basketball.
