Rick Barnes made history in Tennessee’s win tonight

Rick Barnes has John Calipari’s number. Tennessee’s 82-71 win over Kentucky tonight brings Barnes’ record vs. Cal as the Vols’ head coach to 8-5, making him the only active head coach to lead his team to at least three victories in Rupp. Tennessee has won six of its last nine games against Kentucky, a stat made even more depressing by the fact that tonight’s win is only the Vols’ seventh all-time in Rupp (1977, 1979, 1999, 2006, 2018, 2020, 2021).

In the Calipari Era, Tennessee is the only program to have logged wins over Kentucky for six consecutive seasons. Keep in mind Kentucky was up by 10 with 12 minutes to go and John Fulkerson, who killed the Cats last season, scored zero points. Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory is this team’s calling card.

Barnes outcoached Cal again. Askew, Mintz, and Boston are a waste of space.

Anybody can see that the problem is simply talent. He’s having to depend on guys who would have never sniffed the floor in the past 10+ years. They do not have a single guy who will ever make an NBA roster. Jackson might as an energy guy off the bench, but I doubt it. The rest are G-league or overseas talent at best. The real crime is not filling the roster consistently. He’s left 3-4 scholarships open for the last several years who could have been filled with guys who would have been better than these crappy freshmen he’s relying on now.

Johnnycat, I’m not sure. If Cal was wrong about the talent, so was every recruiting service. We had the #1 class. We got the #1 transfer in Sarrs and one of the best guard transfers. Those guys were not a mystery, they performed well at real schools. So, they do lack the talent we THOUGHT they had, but the team is not without talent. They have experience. They have talent. Lottery talent? No. But this is one of the most talented teams in the country – not as good as we are used to – but not without talent. AND YET that are 5-12. FIVE and TWELVE. That’s not talent, that’s coaching. We could be 12-5 and bitching about how they had less talent than we thought and they’d be the 2d worst team of the Cal era but it’s 5-12. There IS no explanation for that which doesn’t begin and end with Cal.

I believe we will see a lot of these guys have real careers after they mature. They won’t mature at Kentucky. It will be at G league or our competition. It will be like this until Calipari is gone.

The Commonwealth can’t afford to fire Cal. So, we can stop talking about firing him. On the other hand, he could be a gentleman and and do what Tubby did and move on to pursue other opportunities. It’s time.

He has already pursued other opportunities. That’s the problem. While other coaches were preparing their teams for the season last summer, Cal was working on his Cameo business, his Coffee with Cal radio show, his McLendon initiative, and his voter registration drive.

T-Town, all true and he gets distracted by the next shiny thing. But, Sabin does commercials and cameos… and yet he keeps winning. Of course, he also adapts, and hires assistants who can go on to be HC not washed up guys. I defended Cal until this debacle but you make $9m/ year you get no mulligans. Are we tough on him? Yea. $9m buys you excellence or it’s a breach.

Matt has got to quit his tired rhetoric that Calipari is better than Rick Barnes. Plain and simple, Kentucky no longer has the best coach in our own conference, and Calipari has got quit getting mentions as one of the greats in the country.

Cal needs to take a “mental health” leave for the rest of the season and let’s see how they do.
