Richards, Montgomery not among Top 100 prospects on CBS Draft Board

Nick Richards and EJ Montgomery each threw their name into the NBA Draft before Sunday’s deadline, but both left open the option of returning to Kentucky. The assumption is they will return once they get all they need out of the process, although crazier things have happened. We won’t really know until they say it, whenever that day comes in the next month.

In the meantime, we can see where Richards and Montgomery fall on the CBSSports.com NBA Draft Big Board, updated Monday afternoon. And it’s not good for their immediate NBA dreams.

Neither Richards nor Montgomery ranked within the top 100 prospects on the new big board. The top hundred. Only their three early-entrant teammates in the draft — PJ Washington, Tyler Herro and Keldon Johnson — made the list. Reid Travis also missed the cut.

Washington ranked the highest among the UK guys, coming in at No. 11. Johnson and Herro are at No. 18 and 22.

And even though Montgomery and Richards aren’t ranked, they did the right thing by taking advantage of the new rule.

Yup, no surprises. Maybe a little with Travis not making it at all. I know his weaknesses but still…

Unless I missed it, KSR never actually posted a story saying that Richards entered the draft. There’s just the one about him needing to submit his name by midnight yesterday.

Neither of those things were crazy. It was apparent that they were all staying in the draft from the beginning.

You have to really be suspect about the rankings of big guys coming out of high school. Putting up all sorts of glamorous numbers on guys 7 inches shorter than them. Neither of these guys showed fundamental bball skills meaning they relied on their size and athleticism. That;s fine when playing physically inferior players, but they just cannot defend a guy their size, and have trouble scoring on guys their size. It seems like we get either AD or KAT type players or players like EJ and Nick.

Neither is a one-and-done type player, but both showed immense improvement this year, Nick in particular. You have to remember, with him, he only played basketball for 4 years before he got to college. So he’s basically a decade behind his contemporaries. At the division-1 level, that’s an enormous amount of ground to make up. Will he do it? I don’t know…But he’s definitely improved, just maybe not as quickly as we would have hoped.

I just don’t understand why folks seem to complain when kids leave early, and then complain when they don’t. You can’t have it both ways. EJ was highly ranked out of high school, and has shown flashes of what he’s capable of. It just took him a while to adjust, and that’s perfectly fine. I think he’s poised for a breakout year next year, and we’re going to be really glad he’s on our team.

Good points. EJ’s single biggest problem is he ALWAYS reaches over the player he’s defending and falls for virtually every pump fake.
