One of John Calipari’s most trusted members of the Kentucky coaching staff is reportedly headed elsewhere.

According to Lawrence Kreymer of The DePaulia – DePaul’s student newspaper – UK deputy director of athletics DeWayne Peevy has finalized a deal with DePaul to become the school’s next athletic director, with an announcement set for next week.

“Source confirms to The DePaulia that DePaul and DeWayne Peevy have finalized terms for Peevy to become DePaul’s next athletic director,” said Kreymer. “Official announcement coming early next week.”

Peevy just completed his 12th year at the University of Kentucky and his sixth as the deputy director of athletics.

The UK Athletics staple joined the staff in August 2008, where he has played a prominent role in the day-to-day administration of Kentucky’s 22-sport intercollegiate athletics program ever since. Among other roles, Peevy assists UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart with strategic planning, key fund-raising and public relations initiatives as a member of his executive staff. He also oversees the men’s basketball program, the UK Athletics senior staff, and is the liaison to the Southeastern Conference and SEC Network offices.

Back in July, Peevy was singled out as one of the “behind-the-scenes power players” in the SEC. Through conversations with Power 5 athletic directors, coaches, high-level administrators, agents, media members, and more, AL.com’s John Talty and Matt Zenitz came up with the list of “vitally important people who have real influence” in the league, and Peevy’s name was among the 13 featured.

“It is only a matter of time before the man who has John Calipari’s complete trust becomes an athletic director. The Birmingham native has worked his way up through the PR ranks, from the Gulf South Conference to his alma mater Montevallo to the SEC and, finally, to Kentucky. Peevy spent four years as Kentucky’s basketball SID, where he famously got Calipari to embrace Twitter (he now has 1.6 million followers), before transitioning to deputy AD in 2013. He currently handles a lot of the department’s day-to-day operations and oversees men’s basketball, among other duties. With relationships at every level of the conference, AL.com’s sources paint Peevy as well-liked as one can be in SEC circles. Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart has a terrific track record of developing future ADs — Alabama’s Greg Byrne, Florida’s Scott Stricklin and Oregon’s Rob Mullens, to name a few — and Peevy will be the next one to make the jump.”

Will Kentucky lose a second valued member of the basketball staff just a week after losing Kenny Payne to the New York Knicks? It looks like that is likely the case.

Can we keep Peevy and send Barnfart packing? All of the ADs listed above are better than Barnfart. Barnfart is awful.

Yes, every single athletic program at UK is performing at or near peak historic level, so Barnhart is awful. He may not be the most charismatic guy, but he runs a hell of an athletic department. How about we keep him and you go support another program.

BlueKyMike is an idiot. Look how long it has taken to make improvements in facilities, fundraising, coaching hires, and on-field performance. How about you and Barnfart create your own program.

Do you think the ADs ain’t Alabama, Florida, and Oregon are any good? Well, they all worked for Mitch Barnhart before getting those jobs. I guess those three schools think he trains people to run the our own Major ptograms.

Maybe Barhart was being carried by those assistants.

Maybe Peevy can come back whenever Barnhart decides to retire!

What this signals is that Cal’s time at UK
is coming to an end in the near future that probably means 3 or 4 year from now. We will see. Let enjoy Cal while we still have him. Go Cats!!!

Cal is high maintenance and Barnfart is a meddling micromanager. Peevy has served as the buffer.
