Is Division I college basketball ready for the return of Billy Gillispie? It could be happening in the near future.

On July 1 Tarleton State, located in Stephenville, Texas, will officially move up to the D-I ranks and join the WAC. Jon Rothstein reports Gillispie has emerged as a candidate for their head coaching vacancy.

Gillispie last coached D-I basketball at Texas Tech in 2012. After dealing with health issues, he returned to coaching at Ranger (Tx.) Junior College in 2015. Health concerns reemerged and almost forced him to retire again, until he found a kidney donor. A year after receiving a kidney transplant, in 2019 he led Ranger to the NJCAA National Championship Game.

First Pitino and now Billy Clyde? 2020 has not been kind to everybody but it’s working out well for former Kentucky basketball coaches.

WAC has been a good stepping stool. Programs like Utah Valley and Grand Canyon.
