Remember that one time we did that one good thing under Billy Gillespie? It’s hard not to think about it every time Kentucky visits Tennessee, so let’s spend a few minutes to honor Mr. Meeks.
Against Bruce Pearl, Tyler Smith and Wayne Chism at Thompson-Boling Arena, Meeks was breaking records left and right. Issel’s single-game record of 53 points held for 39 years until that cold January night in Knoxville. It was the most points scored in the SEC since Chris Jackson dropped 55 in 1989. Meeks made 15 of 22 shots from the floor, 14 of 14 from the free throw line and a school record 10 made 3-pointers on 15 attempts.
Here’s Scott Van Pelt’s Sportscenter highlight reel, with a special bonus: analysis by BBN’s favorite, Jimmy Dykes.
If 5:00 is too much for you, here’s a quickie with Tom Leach on the call.
The only way to describe that performance is with the infamous words of Billy Gillespie, “This isn’t the University of Jodie Meeks.”
