Pulse of the #BBN: An Unusual Amount of Pessimism

For every callback to the 2013-14 “Great Story” team after last night’s one-sided loss to the Gators, there were several more cries of selfish freshman and even, in the most extreme cases, calls for Coach Cal to buckle down and, you know, start coaching.

Considering we’re still 24 days from March, some of the more fringe members of the #BBN seem to be overanalyzing this single loss to an underrated Florida team. When national analysts are constantly hammering home the idea that SEC Basketball consists of Kentucky, and then everybody else, it’s easy to set conference play expectations too high. Florida is talented, and last night, obviously, the Cats just didn’t have a W in them.

So let’s try to be a bit hopeful, shall we? Like these kind folks, who used the #BBN hashtag.

This moment has fueled a lot of talk around the Bluegrass over the past 24 hours. On the one hand, yes, the team was struggling mightily, which is no reason for laughter, but how would you react if a few hundred college students started singing Happy Birthday to you?

I would’ve been pretty annoyed myself, but still.

Deputize this man!

Same. I’d rather not lose at all, but if I had to choose…

A calming sentiment from a great reporter. Followed up with…

I’m suddenly full of faith again.

I don’t know if it’s unusual……we cry about every thing…….we go from amazing to fire cal everytime we play bad

You are as crazy as this author. Over analyzing this SINGLE LOSS ?!?! Are you KIDDING ME ?!?! This team SHOULD be 0-4 the last 4 games, and they are getting WORSE every game. THAT’S why the fan base is upset. And Cal just says, “Yeah I saw it coming”. Really, then why didn’t you stop it? How many million dollars and NBA draft picks do you need to win? Anyone ever hear Saban say anything remotely like that and blame his players? The trend for this team is to be an 8 seed or worse and get whacked by some mid level Big Ten team. This will be the third year in a row we lose to a team with half our talent and twice the coaching if we keep on this path.

I agree. Everyone praises cal. Cal has had absurd talent. 1 title

Well, to be fair, Saban does get to keep most of his 5-star recruits for at least 3 years. That being said, I think Cal needs to find a better balance between one-and-done studs and kids who will stay for 3+ years. Having to start over every year is making an old man out of Cal.

I’m pissed too, but I learned after 2011 and 2014 to take a wait and see approach before crucifying the coach. However, you are right that the “players first” mantra is not going to sit well with the fans if the team flames out in the post season.

Exactly right RCF…we waited and waited and waited last year for Skal to finally buy in and it never happened. There does need to be a better balance…not every five star kid is a one and done…but unfortunately there is the mentality that when a 5 star comes to UK they will be a one and done and if they aren’t it is a disappointment. I think that honestly pushes Cal to play players in order to push them along when in any other situation they might be on the bench. I love our players individually but something isn’t clicking as a team…
Also, I agree with syrin that this isn’t an over-reaction to one lost game…this is a valid reaction to what very well could have been a four game losing streak. That is inexcusable.

This site breeds Negativism. Lot people on here with all the answers, know more about coaching than Coach Cal.

It’s not just this site, it’s the internet in general, and not just with sports.

This comes up in the arts a lot, all fields. Great is something you do, not something you are. Young players think they’re great after winning a few games, being ranked first. Means nothing until the season is over; every game you have to do great. Oddly I think this has hit Briscoe most. Word that he was woofing how soft Florida was to them at the start – then they get clobbered on the boards. That would only be appropriate after the season when you’re wearing a ring, if then.

With some of Cal’s teams there’s been something of a ‘bully’ mentality – they destroy the opponent if they get on top, usually, but if they get down they’re in trouble. Maybe it was the illnesses but they didn’t fight a lot after a couple of bad calls killed the start of a rally.

Of course there is pessimism. Teams usually get better as the season goes on, not worse. All these sloppy turnovers are exactly why we have lost the last couple of games. It’s one thing to have the ball stripped, but another to lose it while dribbling in traffic or making bad passes. Briscoe was calling the Gators soft, but this team is softer than last years. Bam is starting to live up to the looks like Tarzan plays like Jane quote that Tubby said about Azubuike. My only problem with Monk is he is willing to take a bad shot instead of passing it off and it just seems as the season has went on, this team has become more selfish. I’ve just never seen a Cal team regress like this so of course fans are bent out of shape.

Oh hell. “I’d rather lose now than in March.” I hadn’t thought of that. I too have a renewed sense of optimism.

Frustrating when it’s such an easy fix. Quit posting the ball. Problem solved. #tweak

Knowing how FL fans were treating Monk, I really don’t think pro-KY sportswriters should have drawn even more negative attention to him laughing. It helped cause bitter feelings in fans without giving the entire story. I know it’s probably good for ratings, but the young man deserves a break. Would we rather have him been scowling at those FL fans?

I agree with you. This was a non-story anyway but definitely not something for pro-UK writers to write about…unless it was in his defense. Give him the benefit of the doubt and move on.

KSR promotes that line of thinking just as much, if not more so, than national analysts.

2009-10: Started 3 Frosh (Cousins, Wall, Bledsoe); 3 losses, E8
2010-11: Started 3 Frosh (Knight, Lamb, Jones); 9 losses, FF
    2011-12: Started 3 Frosh…sometimes 2 w/ Miller (Teague, MKG, Davis); 2 losses, NC
2012-13: Started 3 Frosh (Goodwin, Poythress, Noel); 12 losses, NIT
    2013-14: Started 4 frosh…sometimes 5 w/ Dakari (Twins, Randle, Young) 10 losses, Title Game
2014-15: Started 1-2 Frosh (Towns, and Booker/Lyles)… 1 loss FF
2015-16: Started 2-3 Frosh (Briscoe, Murray, sometimes Skal), 9 losses, R32

Aight… so we start 4 Frosh this year and we’re taking some L’s, but what really scares you about this team? They’re not playing the way they SHOULD right now, but they have been dominant. And every Cal team save ’10,’12, and ’15 took their lumps during the season. ’11 made a FF run out of nowhere, and ’14 seriously flubbed all year until clicking in March. Both of those teams had less or equal talent, respectively to this year. Neither looked as dominant as this year did up front. At some point, great young players have to realize they’re beatable until they become a great team. Cal does this with most of his teams here… some click early, some click late. I’m not writing this team off at all… when those L’s pile up is when Cal usually gets their attention.

Wildcat Sheli—– Yes I would rather him have been scowling than laughing it up. I would rather him have done anything else besides laugh when your team is getting drilled. Flip ’em the bird like Pitino is better than laughing or better yet have no reaction at all to the florida fans.

I “don’t like this team.” They won’t play defense, can’t shoot (which is a trademark of most of the “studs” we get), & lazy when it comes to rebounding. We are totally dysfunctional. Bam has become a black hole, what goes in doesn’t come out, other than in the hands of the other team. This team is like the Nerlens Noel team; it is not a good team. We beat NC only because they don’t play defense either. Out side of NC and Michigan State, we have lost to every ranked team we have played.

I don’t care if Monk laughs at a birthday song. I do care that he doesn’t play defense or rebound. So much talent, but not even close to a complete player. Other players get benched for not playing defense.

Meh. The whiniest fans on here will be the first to claim they knew this team was awesome when we make the final four again. Happened during the randle and knight years, it will happen again this year. Getting mad because freshmen play like freshmen for a stretch….boo hoo.
