Oregonian uses picture of Calipari in article about college hoops corruption

Yesterday, The Oregonian published an expose on T.J. Gassnola, one of the central figures in the college hoops trial, but by looking at the article, you’d think it was about John Calipari.

While Gassnola, a former Adidas bagman turned star witness for the government, is in the picture used by reporters Brad Schmidt and Jeff Manning atop the piece (blurry, side profile, behind Calipari and Derek Kellogg), Calipari is clearly the most recognizable face:

Mercifully, the caption on the website gives some direction as to where Gassnola is in the photo with “basketball royalty,” but Twitter doesn’t allow for that, so Cal’s face is now attached to a story that’s been shared all across social media by Jay Bilas (1.95 million followers), Adam Zagoria (50K followers), and The Oregonian (300K followers).

As Calipari’s daughter Megan tweeted, could they not find a better picture of Gassnola?

Pictures of Gassnola are in short supply (purposefully so, I’m sure) but Sports Law Blog seems to have a nice one:

Photo via Sports Law Blog

SportsGossip.com even had the decency to put an arrow pointing at Gassnola in this picture:

At the very least, The Oregonian could have done that, or put a big circle around Gassnola’s head. Or, use a photo of Rick Pitino, who was fired as a result of the scandal, or Bill Self, who’s been linked to it multiple times. Or, just use a stock photo of an Adidas basketball. But, that wouldn’t get as many clicks, right?

All former Cat Wenyen Gabriel could do was laugh.

As you might expect, Erin Calipari is also putting the decision to use the photo featuring her dad on blast, even going back and forth with Jay Bilas over it:

Bilas already has his hands full with Erin and Megan, but when Ellen finds out, he’s toast. Fire coming to Instagram in 3…2…1…

I wonder how Bilas would feel if it was he and not Cal bogusly attached to this story? Or how about his mother? He prob wouldn’t appreciate that. And the story doesn’t have to mention Cal – the pic blatantly implies his involvement which is false.

I normally take up for Bilas around here because I think he’s pretty well informed on college b-ball, and I think he praises UK far more than he gets credit for. That being said, this is a bad look for him. Not so much him sharing the article (which is bogus, he, the Oregonian, and others knew exactly what kind of backlash they’d get from us for the false implication the picture conveys), but that “or have someone read it to you” remark is going to catch hell. Whether he meant to be sexist or not, I don’t really know, but it REALLY comes off that way. Bilas will regret this whole thing, even if it’s a very small backlash, there will still be backlash.

    • jahanc2uky

I was slammed on here, by you banana, for saying Bias is exactly that towards his alum last Sunday. Let this moment be remembered as the beginning of the end for Bias. He will be disliked worst than Billy Packer by the time his career as a broadcaster is over. As well informed and praising of UK as he might be, that does not make up for his dead air silence during exciting parts of a game (reference IU v MSU last saturday) and his obsession over critiquing the officiating of a basketball game. He sucks as a broadcaster and is nothing more than a Duke Fanboy. Say what you want about Matt, but his willingness to do NFL football along with Kentucky politics (topics with very little to do with UK) shows he is more diverse than a college basketball fanboy journalist. Jay Bias SUCKS!

Rabbler you are missing the point. Conveniently ignoring the fact Cal is on the picture of a story tied to a major college basketball scandal is bad. What is worse, he is not apologizing for the ignoring and doubling down by insulting people who call him out. It does not matter who or what he says, what matters is his hypocrisy and then arrogance when retweeting this news article.

    • rabblerabblerabble

Regardless, Jay is in the wrong on his take. Wonder if he would be okay if a ring of national sportscasters were found to be involved in illegal business dealings, and a news story was published in a large newspaper with his picture front and center? Somehow, I think not. And rightly so.

Jay Bilas is always a fool that doesn’t like Cal, just like the rest of ESPN and most other media outlets. He’s a threat to their way of life, leaches that live off of amateurism. The media hates Cal as much as they hated Rupp, and it is for the same reason. THEY are the corrupt ones. THEY are the racists and misogynists, and the ones that are easily bought by fancy gifts and dinners with the likes of Rick Pitino and CrotchK.

Why are people losing their minds over this?! Bilas generally has good things to say about UK and Cal, and when he doesn’t, it’s usually honest and correct in context. Was his tweet defensive and hasty? Sure. But I honestly can’t find anything sexist about it, or even specifically directed at Megan. By and large, I love the Megan/Erin/Brad/Ellen online banter, but we all know it, both the Calipari daughters are as left-leaning and feminist as you can get. And like any feminist, Megan immediately took any sort of dig as being because she’s a woman. You’d think a PhD would know there are guys out there who can’t read. Bilas probably didn’t even look at who tweeted him back, but the Princess assumed it was about her.
