One Crazy Alex Poythress Stat

Alex Poythress, Denzel Valentine

Everyone loves absurd stats and numbers, right? Well, here’s one for our very own Alex Poythress courtesy of Sports Illustrated’s Luke Winn.

Winn charted every defensive possession during Kentucky’s first 20 games last season. During that time, the player Poythress was guarding shot 12.8 percent from the floor. Read that again. Poythress held his opponent to 12.8 percent shooting from the floor.  Simply put Poythress doesn’t give up buckets and that number was obviously higher than anyone else on the team during Winn’s charting.

Thinking about the insane defensive numbers a core of Tyler Ulis, Alex Poythress and Marcus Lee can put up together has to have John Calipari drooling. Also this stat shows how vital it will be to keep Poythress on the floor next season.

There’s a reason why Alex going down was a much bigger deal than many led on about. Against Wisconsin he would have shut down Dekker.

People forgot that poytheress was the reason we made our run in 2014 to the final game. He put us in a position for Aaron to make the big shots. Also, he shut down Dekker and even Kaminsky that year and even though both players improved their game, Poy would have done the same this year. There were so many physical, close games where we said,”this is an Alex type game.” I feel confident in saying that if he had stayed healthy, we would have 9 rings right now, and 8 players declaring for the draft.

I was just starting to get my act together, and here we go with what could have been again.

The only way to fix this; make up for it this year with an incredible run to the elusive #9.

I’m sure his defense was good, but he only played eight games last year, not 20.

This stat fires me up for next season… but it also just makes me sad. Poythress would’ve ate Sam Dekker’s lunch in that last game. Would’ve just gobbled it down like a fat kid with a turkey & cheese lunchable. Sigh.
