No national media member followed Olivier Sarr’s eligibility more closely than Dick Vitale, so it’s no surprise that the ESPN analyst has the Kentucky big man on his list of preseason All-Americans. First Team, in fact. Sarr is the only Wildcat to make one of Dickie V’s five teams, which only makes sense when you read that Vitale refuses to include freshmen, or, rather, “diaper dandies.”

Sarr is joined on the First Team by Luka Garza (Iowa), Ayo Dosunmu (Illinois), Jared Butler (Baylor), and Remy Martin (Arizona State). Other familiar names include Florida’s Keyontae Johnson, who is on the Third Team; West Virginia’s Oscar Tshiebwe and LSU’s Trendon Watford, who are on the Fourth Team; and John Fulkerson, who represents the Tennessee Volunteers with his skinny headband on the Fifth Team.

Last season at Wake Forest, Sarr averaged 13.7 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game, shooting 52.7% from the floor. He made the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Third Team and was the runner-up for the 2020 ACC Most Improved Player award.

“I think I’m a versatile kind of big,” Sarr told reporters last week. “Stretch five but also really great presence inside. I’m a great defensive rebounder and I feel like I’m a great shooter too. I’m also a great defender. I still need to improve being able to guard one through five, but that’s pretty much my game.”

Check out the rest of Dickie V’s All-American teams at the link below, along with some footage of Sarr in practice.

Well if Sarr can play up to even a third team AA level it’s going to mean great things for us. He’s already pretty easily the best and most heralded transfer to be here in the Cal era (I may be forgetting someone obvious, but he’s certainly leaps and bounds above Reid Travis and that dude last year, both of whom I love). It’s very exciting this year and not just because of the freshman, and it’s arguably our best group of freshman in quite some time, but with the transfers as well. I’m likely most excited about Brooks, man if he reaches 75% of his potential this year, watch out!

From third team all acc to first team AA. That’s a leap. I hope it’s true, but I don’t see it
