I like having freshman studs every year but it would be nice to have some upperclass man!

If you mean upperclassmen, what were Hawkins,Willis and Mulder? Or do you mean upperclassmen with the same talent as our freshmen? Thing is a lot of fans complained about Tubby not getting the top recruits hardly ever. The only way,. unless the NBA rules change, that UK under Cal will ever have top players that stick around for 4 years is if quits recruiting the so called “one and done” players and if he did that just means some other school will get them besides UK, then fans will complain just like under Tubby that we aren’t getting the best players. So, the upperclassmen we are always going to have with Calipari as coach is just like we had this season, players that are not one done type players that need a couple of players to develop either that or transfers like Mulder and Julius Mays, that Cal has professed to to like to recruit because most didn’t mesh with the one and done philosophy. So it’s a catch 22 situation. I know what you’re thinking but upperclassmen don’t guarantee a national championship. History and players like Dwayne Wade have proven that when it comes to UK basketball.

Interesting to have a poorly officiated tournament end in a terribly officiated game. Refs getting Gonzagas best players in foul trouble seemed a tad bit ironic. Then a blown call where Meeks had his hand out of bounds on a jump ball late, and can someone please explain how they can go right to a replay to ensure Hicks got a shot off before the shot clock violation, but couldn’t in 2015 vs Wisc.?

The NCAA has a big problem on their hands with officiating and with rule changes they have to go to 6 fouls at minimum. It’s almost comical and sickening at the same time with how bad it has become.

I’ve said all year that that there were no “great” teams this year, just about twenty “pretty good” ones. I think UK (or UCLA or UNC) were all probably a little better than any of the other Final Four teams this year, though.

UNC very easily should’ve been beaten in 3 different games in the tourney. They had some luck on their side to get to the title game and win it all. They’re a great team but UK should’ve had them beat if a few things had gone differently.

Every game UNC played in the tournament included the other teams best players in foul trouble all night. This is what allows Carolina to stay in the game. Add in 20 years of systematic academic fraud on Roy’s watch and you have a National champion? This is beyond belief. How are they still playing? I guess Clem Haskins wishes he coached at UNC. The championship was in the finals of the south regionals. The NCAA is too worried about trying to sell tickets to arenas close to schools instead of putting teams where they belonged…. Power 5 needs to dump the NCAA and form their own organization. The NCAA is an antiquated, old school, good ole intellectuals club making decisions about sport. Enough already!

I cannot believe the situations that led to this. It feels like we’re living in an alternate reality. UNC is a good team, but I truly believe they did not deserve this. Officiating isn’t perfect, I get it. but this? Bad. Arkansas should have beat them.

I’m so proud of our team. I’m thankful for every year. But…I think it’s time we remind everyone who’s boss. Let’s get Number 9!

Trying not to throw up. The only way this could have been worse is if it were Duke or Louisville. I’d like to think we’ll be back in the hunt next year, but we will have no experience at all, and all of our really good teams lately at least had a few upperclassmen that contributed. If there is a flaw to the one-and-done system, it’s that it really needs to have some balance of a few experienced guys. It may be a while before we win another championship, I’m afraid. In the mean time, UNC is gaining in our rearview mirror.

Kentucky was better than Carolina by the end of the year. No doubt. UNC had 7 losses. They scored 43 points in a game in late February. I wish the officiating had been fair in the Memphis elite eight game. It was officiated in a way to directly steal away Kentucky’s strengths. There’s no guarantee that Kentucky would beat Oregon or Gonzaga, but they were better than Carolina given a fair shake.

I have no animosity for the the players for Carolina this year. I do have an issue with a program that has made a mockery of college basketball for decades to not only avoid repercussions but be given advantages! Cheaters do prosper it would seem.

  19. wesmorgan1
    12:14 am April 4, 2017 Permalink

The officiating wasn’t truly poor in the first half – lots of no-calls and some ticky-tack, but they were basically within the norms.

The first 12 minutes of the second half decided the game – 21 fouls in 12 minutes? That was just NUTS – the refs decided to change the game. After that, every no-call or ticky-tack foul (that were ‘normal’ in the first half) was a gamechanger.

My daughter just played her last collegiate game (in the NAIA National Tournament), so my 11 years of watching refs with the rulebook in my head are over – but this was one of the most poorly officiated “big games” I’ve seen at any level.

I think it’s time for the NCAA (or, at least, the Power 5 conferences) to adopt the NBA’s “Last 2 Minutes” public review of officiating. Let’s see some responsibility assigned for blown calls — like the Meeks-out-of-bounds held ball that led to the decisive basket.

(As an aside…it’s hard to believe that “freedom of movement, especially in the post and with rebounding” was an actual Point of Emphasis for officials this season.)

Poor if not ‘tainted’ officiating, protecting ‘some’ schools from obvious penalties (right UofL and NC?), and then circling like vultures around a few programs (right UK?) waiting for a booster to give a kid a slick of gum so they can bitch slap you and put your nuts in vise within 72 hours of the infraction.

Not to change the subject, but hey there NCAA, how’s that 3 year investigation going at UNC?

Presuming there’s not some new revelations down the road to vacate this season, and given they’re not going to retroactively be put on probation, by rights, this should end up their 4th title. They should lose 05 and 09 (93’s probably dirty, too, but I don’t know enough about what was going on back then), and then they should get a couple years of death penalty probation during which they can console themselves with the 2017 title they shouldn’t have been eligible for. Most people are going to just praise them and Roy, and hey, bad officiating or otherwise, they did win this year with apparently eligible players. But they’re the dirtiest program in the history of the sport, and we’re literally seeing a case of cheaters prospering. And before the Dick Vitales of the world say these current UNC players had nothing to do with any scandals, they went to UNC because of its tainted, ill-gotten legacy and its coach’s tainted, ill-gotten record.

If the NCAA wasn’t so biased and inconsistent, we’d soon be hearing about those two titles being vacated, plus Louisville’s title, and then maybe rival fans would have something else to pay attention to instead of trying to mock us for Cal’s 2 vacated Final Fours. To paraphrase Bobby Knight, “You have a coach and program winning 3 titles when their players didn’t go to class for 20 years, and another coach and program that bought strippers and hookers for recruits and players.”

Somehow this doesn’t surprise me. Felt like this tourney was rigged. Gonzaga should’ve lost to Northwestern. Of all the blown calls I’ve ever seen the goaltend goes down as one of the worst missed calls in history. Then UNC beats Arkansas, the same round, with the help of the officials as well. UNC blocks a ball out of bounds, refs go review play, EVERYONE agreed that it was clearly blocked out of bounds by Carolina, officials give it to UNC. Game changer. UK vs UNC….. All around this has been a rough tourney. Only good thing was the SEC holding 3 of 8 spots in the Elite 8. I know it’s been said time and time again on this thread, but I just woke up, but it’s a damn shame that the winner of the tourney should be on the death penalty stemming from 22 years worth of academic fraud. If the basketball team hadn’t been part of this the other programs would’ve already been punished. Being that it’s UNC basketball it’s a hard pull to swallow but it’s extremely obvious nothing is going to happen. There will be 0 wins stripped, banners won’t come down, Williams won’t be fired, and the NCAA will rub their palms at the results of the tourney. Not only were there 22 years of academic fraud but I think people are quick to forget that around 4-5 years ago UNC players were hanging out with that drug dealer receiving money and getting cars from him too. Of course nothing came from that either

The last three years have been tainted, IMO, since either Duke or Carolina have won it or been in the finals. If not for a miracle shot by Nova last year, it would have been three tainted champions in a row. Both of these programs should have multiple banners removed from their rafters if the NCAA implemented sanctions fairly and evenly. College BB is my favorite sport, but this morning it has lost much of its shine, because it really feels like the table is set for certain programs to advance at the expense of the sport’s integrity. If at least one UNC banner does not come down, the NCAA itself should be investigated.

    • catsarerunnin

The NCAA runs its own little world. They do what they want, not for the benefit of the student athlete, but for money. They run their own little empire. They also play favorites with certain programs and coaches. UNC will NEVER lose a banner. Neither will UL. Duke,Kansas and Syracuse are on the favorite list also. UK and Cal however would be HAMMERED if under investigation for the same things. It would be the death penalty.

    • RealCatsFan

Agree that a timeout to slow UNC’s momentum may have been warranted. My biggest issue with Cal is that he seems to allow his teams to let off the gas when they get a lead late in the second half. Instead of attacking aggressively (which is usually what got them that lead), he seems to go into conservative mode and tries to milk the shot clock. I don’t want to see them just come down and jack up a shot, but you do want them to continue to be aggressive on offense and defense.

That being said, I think bad luck and a few key calls that went against us were our undoing against UNC.

My thoughts are this would have been a program serving a penalty for academic fraud this year had the NCAA done ANYTHING about the issue…instead, the NCAA just crowned Cheater U the National Champions.

I can say I don’t fault the current players but they attended UNC based upon their past two decades of work which is part of the academic fraud…I can say I don’t fault the fans but they too looked the other way while all of this was going on, same for the administrators at UNC…I can however fault Ol’Roy and the NCAA for allowing such mockery of a sport that is as special as the World Series or Super Bowl.

It is a shame it came down to them this year…had they lost this game there might have been some justice in the world but no way the NCAA takes action now. I think the NCAA would have acted last year if all the players didn’t return to make another run at it. Who knows…I feel like I was robbed this year and not because UK lost, but because Cheater U did!

Like I said a week ago, a big reason the UK loss hurt so bad was we knew it was the real national championship game because none of the teams left were as good as UK or UNC. The winner of that game, barring a massive upset, was sure to be national champion.
