The Bob Cousy Award already has its eyes on 20 of the best point guards in college basketball, and Kentucky’s two eligible candidates aren’t among them.

True freshman Devin Askew and Big East transfer Davion Mintz did not make the cut for the 20-man Bob Cousy Award Preseason Watch List, a list of the preseason contenders for the honor given to the best point guard in college basketball.

2021 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award Candidates
Remy Martin, Arizona State
Jared Butler, Baylor
McKinley Wright IV, Colorado
Marcus Zegarowski, Creighton
Jalen Crutcher, Dayton
Scottie Barnes, Florida State
Jalen Suggs, Gonzaga
Ayo Dosunmu, Illinois
Marcus Garrett, Kansas
Javonte Smart, LSU
Cade Cunningham, Oklahoma State
Colbey Ross, Pepperdine
Fatts Russell, Rhode Island
Jacob Gilyard, Richmond
Geo Baker, Rutgers
Bryce Aiken, Seton Hall
Matt Coleman III, Texas
Collin Gillespie, Villanova
Kihei Clark, Virginia
D’Mitrik Trice, Wisconsin

It is only the fourth time in John Calipari’s 11 seasons at Kentucky that he hasn’t had a point guard on the early watch list for the Cousy award.

2009-10: John Wall, (finalist)
2010-11: Brandon Knight (finalist)
2011-12: Marquis Teague (finalist)
2012-13:
2013-14: Andrew Harrison
2014-15: Andrew Harrison, Tyler Ulis
2015-16: Tyler Ulis (WINNER)
2016-17: De’Aaron Fox (finalist)
2017-18:
2018-19:
2019-20: Ashton Hagans

Askew and Mintz are both very capable point guards who are battling it out in the early practices, so do not receive this news as a weakness in the Kentucky backcourt. They can still play their way into consideration.

Askew going to make this look silly.

Agreed, Askew will definitely be on the mid-season list that comes out after all the dimes he dishes out to Boston, Clarke, Brooks, Allen, Ware, Fletcher, Jackson and Sarr, Mintz might make the list as well, I think the kid was under rated as a transfer, played up to the challenge and was more than solid in Creighton’s biggest games, which is what you wanna see. I think Askew will be the starterz but mainly because Cal likes to have an experienced steadying hand coming off the bench if games don’t start off as planned. Mintz will give us that and allow Askew to regroup if needed, or possibly learning on the fly playing beside each other at times, we all know Cal loves to play two PG’s at the same time.
