Every player pretty much had their worse game ever. This was just the perfect storm. We missed like 20 open layups. We’re lucky it was even that close. Combine that with Evansville having some really hot players, well there you go. It’s early, not really a big deal. But it sucks that it happened at home, and it sucks that it happened when we were #1. However, I’m not really worried about it at all. In fact, the only thing it can do is help us.

I like the optimism, but offense is a problem for this team. Maxey seems like the guy, but they are just not good offensively right now.

Seriously Nov games mean very little. We will know exactly what we have come late January as always since Cal has been here. The MSU games meant nothing as does this loss. Only concerning thing is the shooting percentage. Did not shoot well at all, even the MSU win was terrible shooting. Hard to win 6 straight in March if you can’t shoot and that is something Cals team have always run into.

Hagans is the worst guard under Cal at finishing at the rim, and one of the worst outside shooters. The whole team outside Maxey is way below average at finishing lay ups. We got out rebounded by this team, no real serious post up looks, Cal didn’t call time outs when they went on runs. Just bad all around.

NBA drafts on athletic ability and potential so we will have a few in 1st round. One has to wonder why a coach would not play Juzang more as we obviously had trouble making shots and he is supposed to be our maker, not shooter. Only got 12 minutes and made only 3 taken, seems a coach would have tried to let him get going. Must not be a projected one and done guy so he will not get much time.

Not most overrated by far but not a good game coach as I have said for years. People say look at his record, well duh. When you have 7 McD’s all Americans every game and 95% of your opponents have none you win most of your games. Coaching is not about just winning, is about winning games you are even in or not expected to win. Look at losses to WVU, Wisc, Robert Morris, Bama, KState, Auburn etc. Way more talent and very bad losses due to coaching, or lack of.

Nothing new so not surprised that an early UK team loses a game like this one. Hagan’s seriously?? Not asking for perfection and to dominate every game but damn he needs to contribute way more than he did and this game shows they’ll play up or down to the competition instead of going out and crushing the ones they are “supposed to.” Reminds me of Penn
State beating UK back in the early 2000’s around this time. Won’t be the last game they lose and they’ll win some that we won’t expect so get used to another crazy ass UK hoops season fo guessing what team will show up each game

Ashton Hagans player liked a straight bum tonight. And I don’t know how many times Sestina got burnt on defense. Quickley & Maxey had their moments, but overall the entire team looked pathetic on both ends. Our defense was atrocious & we turned the ball over way too many times. The outside shots weren’t falling & we missed so many easy shots in the paint. We deserved to lose that game tonight. Huge win for a great guy in Walter McCarty. Nate is going to be a liability on defense, certainly unless Nick is in behind him, and even then it looks like Jim master in the Georgetown game. Just run by Nate. And why guard Hagans? Even if he gets to the rack he can’t score, let him go and play 5 on 4 – Oh wait that’s what they did. We were exposed by Missouri Valley team that won’t win 15 games. I’m not sure I have seen a worst half of basketball since we lost to Georgetown in the final four in that abomination of a first half where we literally did nothing right. Brooks failing a guy at the midcourt stripe and Hagen fouling a guy on the inbounds pass 94 feet away to take himself out of the game by picking up an early foul – making an early exit inevitable – are just stupid selfish plays the characterize this team.

  43. lexattorney
    9:17 pm November 12, 2019 Permalink

Kentucky just guaranteed themselves to be no higher than the 3 line in March. Cal recruits all of these great shooters and then forgets to work on perimeter shooting in practice. It’s the same story every year. Look at players like Booker and Herro. They shoot MUCH better once they get to the NBA.

    • makeitstop
      9:25 pm November 12, 2019 Permalink

Yep – I thought the same thing it’s going to kill our seeding and then I thought hell we don’t deserve a seed, we’re not any good. We have a point guard who can’t score, And he’s our best defender so we either sacrifice defense or offense and we have no height or depth in the front court because we got some clown who can’t defend but can score. It’s not a question of small ball versus tall ball he would have to put in an offensive and defensive team every stoppage. This isn’t just early-season jitters we genuinely don’t have a lot of very good basketball players. They just lost to a pretty bad team AT RUPP.

  44. lexattorney

I would almost have to say ditto to every comment on here. Absolutely pathetic performance on both ends of the court. Regardless 64 points against Evansville. It happens every year I always wonder to myself how can we have a top 3 recruiting class every year but schools like Evansville always have players that you have never heard of and out shoot our team with ease! Amazing! Maybe Rivals should change how they rank players and measure their hearts!

    • syrin23
      9:20 pm November 12, 2019 Permalink

No, Cal has to recruit 2 lights out automatic three point shooters, even if they are lowly four star recruits. Shooting matters. The NBA game is all about outside shooting. We do the dribble drive with guys who can’t finish kicking it out to guys who can’t shoot.

    • makeitstop
      9:29 pm November 12, 2019 Permalink

Juzang is supposed to be that guy. But he can’t guard or hold onto the ball. Nate is supposed to be a great shooter but he can’t defend anyone. IQ won the 3pt contest at McDonald’s – we have the supposed shooters we just can’t hit can’t rebound – Nate w one handed rebounds? Did they learn that in the patriot league? It’s not a three point shooting problem – we can’t hit layups!

I think catfanFL has a great point as this season progresses. In terms of teaching. But it’s hard for us as fans to swallow this particular pill that will enable it. Might be another way to teach you can lose to anyone on the road or a neutral court.

    • CatsfaninFL
      7:04 am November 13, 2019 Permalink

Ridge no doubt. But we bring this on ourselves. We should know by now in year 11 that these freshman laden teams stumble early because they’re not used to having to bring it every game. It was probably exacerbated by the convincing win last week. Both for fans and players. Reality is we hit 1 or 2 more gimmie baskets( that we missed like 10 of) or stay focused on D a few more drives, we’re writing this off as a great teaching lesson that we got the W on. Problem is we have ran our mouth for the last week so now we have to pay the piper.

But this is Cal’s “best shooting team”. And a solid front line he recruited too. Well done!

Larkin go with the sky high as late in the season this game will have little meaning to anyone. If I liked both I would be much happier for Evansville and what it could do for them next season than I would feel bad for UK, Cal will just pretend we won the game anyways.

Calm down people. Embarrassing loss – yes. But it’s the third game of the season. Basically meaningless. Might be the best thing that could happen to this team. UVA lost to an unranked 16 seed as the overall 1 seed. This does not compare.

Let’s be honest, on our very worst night and Evansville’s best we should win by 8-10. But if it wasn’t for Maxey losing his mind and Mich St missing every open shot they would beaten us by quite a bit. I just don’t see the potential in Whitney or Brooks. The rest is above average but no stars on this team. Call streak of having a lottery pick every year he’s been here is going to end.

True. In game coaching is absolutely nonexistent for Cal. It is as though he needs to distance himself from the game, talk about it with the other coaches and watch film before he can fix anything. If this is the case that is fine, but at least it would explain many bizarre losses (especially in the tournament). What I miss about Tubby Smith is his ability to fix things in a timeout and especially at halftime. You knew issues were going to get fixed immediately. He would have won this game by 25 points.

Ok – but who would u go to to score? Kenny Payne? McCarty? We got two guys who can score from the outside but only if we can get one guy to score inside. If Nick can’t hit that we Not only don’t deserve to win but we can’t win.

doesn’t really matter what happens the rest of the year we now have no shot at a number one seed. We really need to make a plea to the preseason ranksters to stop putting us so high before we play a game. This team will lose 8-10 games.

  66. JDizzle14

Both sports have become broken records of the same problem areas and issues, the same patterns, same trends. U got 2 coaches that r good recruiters but completely overrated in regards to in-game coaching and making adjustments. And 2 coaches who r gonna keep doin it their way no matter what the cost. They know their boss has their back so what do they have to worry abt?

We pass poorly, lazy, underhand, meaningless toss around the perimeter passes from a one guy w no shot to the other guy w no shot then attack one on 4. We dribble to the corner and pull up our dribble. The turnover on the inbounds play in the first half was just typical why would you just stand there and not keep running? The one handed rebounds Nick going to sleep on whole trips – just stood around and watched the action and didn’t work to get open, Then got boxed out by a smaller guy for a rebound?? The crazy missed layups missed point blank shots and we had no idea how to attack that defense – just passed around the perimeter. It’s early, I get it. But I just don’t see any promise from any of the new guys but Maxey and the rest of the guys who are back aren’t any better apart from IQ and sometimes Nick. It’s bleak.

    • bluecrowe
      6:37 pm November 13, 2019 Permalink

Absolutely. Richards is not a clutch player and it does not matter how much Payne has worked with him. He is shooting with essentially the entire game riding on what happens. They needed to drive and get a foul called on that play. Never go to Richards in a must score unless it is to get D to commit on the drive and throw a lob. The dumbest play out of a huddle. Cal should be writing a check to Barnhart for that alone. Embarrassing.

  73. pgsays
    9:42 pm November 12, 2019 Permalink

Not ready to play at all! We have too many non shooters. And over and over those non shooters are taking the shots. Inside game is non existent. Hagans role is defense. In no way should he be taking a lot of shots. Maxey is the only guy who can score consistently. Quickley is very solid. Whitney is an ultra athlete but his basketball IQ is less than Diallo’s was.

  74. T-Town Cat
    9:43 pm November 12, 2019 Permalink

I think this showed the lack of superior talent on this team, which Cal’s system relies on. Herro, PJ, Johnson, and Travis were replaced by Maxey, Brooks, Whitney, and Sestina. Big dropoffs in talent at each position. We will have to win with superior heart and hustle this year, like we did against Michigan State.

  75. nocode96
    9:48 pm November 12, 2019 Permalink

Even I’ve got to admit that looked pretty bad. Offense needs to get better, and it will. Getting a number 1 this early isn’t good for us, too young and inexperienced to handle it properly. I love Sestina a ton, but his defense stands out as really poor. Too many turnovers, too many missed shots, not enough drive and confidence. This one sucks, really badly, but they’ll be fine when it counts. This is a learning opportunity and a call back to reality. Sky isn’t falling, and I still love the Cats. Go Big Blue!

Many of you keep saying ‘oh well, March is when it matters’ and That just tells where this program has gone. We don’t become the all-time wins leader by just playing in March! Kentucky is KENTUCKY and there is no excuse for us to lose a game like this. The issue is coaching or lack thereof. Simply put, we don’t scout these teams and prepare for them as we should. Cal always says ‘we worry about ourselves’ or ‘if we play our game it won’t matter’ or whatever. Frankly, I think Cal is a great recruiter, an average motivator, a great life coach for aspiring NBA players, a poor game planner and even worse at x and O plays in game. In the grand scheme of life, this game is no big deal. We have much bigger issues in the world to fix. And that is how Cal spins it. Great! I get that! But speaking exclusively from a sports standpoint, this loss in inexcusable! Que the personal attacks and hatred towards this post from Koolaid drinkers,3, 2, 1….
