Night 1 Predictions: Anderson and Jones to coach their last games

SEC tournament basketball is only seven hours away, so why don’t we take a moment to look ahead to tonight’s Day 1 action in our first-round predictions.

It will likely be the last coaching appearances with their respective teams for LSU’s Jonny Jones and Mizzou’s Kim Anderson.

7:00 PM: (12) Mississippi State vs. (13) LSU

Mississippi State took the two regular season meetings over LSU and tonight will make it three for a perfect sweep on the year.

The Tigers are likely looking ahead to putting their awful 2016-17 season behind them and the Bulldogs see an opponent they know can’t hang. Look for I.J. Ready to ball out, as he did in Saturday’s meeting in Starkville, and State rolls through its first opponent in what Ben Howland said, “is a new season.”

Adios, Jonny Jones. It’s been real.

KSR Prediction: Mississippi State 79, LSU 70

9:30 PM: (11) Auburn vs. (14) Missouri

In the nightcap, Bruce Pearl’s young and athletic Tigers will survive and advance against another team of Tigers that played alright by its standards late in the year.

Both Auburn and Missouri enter the tournament on losing streaks of three and six games, respectively, and one has to give. I’m taking Auburn here, led by freshman guards Mustapha Heron (16.2 points, 6.3 rebounds) and Jared Harper (13.7 points, 3.1 assists) in their first SEC tournament appearance.

It will be Kim Anderson’s last SEC tournament appearance.

KSR Prediction: Auburn 81, Missouri 73

Would love to see John Pelphrey get another shot at the big time.
