In the aftermath of the cancellation of spring AAU competition and national events, the NCAA is considering a series of Evaluation Periods to run from August through September.
According to a report by Evan Daniels of 247Sports, the NCAA and NABC are considering individual periods from August 6-9, September 4-6, and October 9-11.
This week, the NCAA announced it would be extending the Dead Period through July 31, meaning the Evaluation Periods in April, June, and July have been canceled due to the coronavirus.
“The extension maintains consistent recruiting rules for all sports and allows coaches to focus on the student-athletes who may be returning to campus,” Council chair M. Grace Calhoun said in a statement. “The committee is committed to reviewing the dead period again in late June or early July.”
As of right now, recruiting is limited to just text messages, phone calls, and video calls via the likes of Facetime, Skype, and Zoom. Until further notice, in-person recruiting is banned both on and off campus. As for scouting, coaches are only able to watch high school film.
High-profile events such as the NBPA Top 100 Camp have been canceled entirely, though other Nike EYBL, adidas 3SSB, and Under Armour events could potentially return when these Evaluation Periods open in the fall.
John Calipari and the UK coaching staff are busy working behind the scenes to come up with a plan to get their players on campus, but after that, it appears they’ll be able to hit the recruiting trail.
