Nate Sestina signs pro deal to play in Russia

Nate Sestina spent an extra year in college to play basketball in Lexington and it paid off to the tune of a professional contract.

The former Wildcat, who transferred to play for Kentucky and head coach John Calipari after four successful seasons at Bucknell, has agreed to a deal with Nizhny Novgorod of the Basketball Champions League and VTB League based out of Russia, according to Nicola Lupo of Sportando.

Sestina was named to the All-Patriot League Second-Team during his senior season at Bucknell and went on to average 5.8 points and 3.8 blocks during his lone year at Kentucky. He started seven of the 28 games he appeared in for the ‘Cats, playing over 19 minutes per game while shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 40.7 from beyond the arc.

He definitely would’ve got a contract last year prior to coming to Kentucky, but him getting a contract for Russian League / VTB League team definitely was helped with this past year at UK. Great paying league with very good exposure opportunities

Play b-ball in Russia? I don’t think I would let my son do that. I would rather him be a HS b-ball coach

Well, there are worse cities in Russia he could have landed. At least it is fairly modern and close to Moscow. Good for Nate chasing his dream.

Hurting his hand/wrist during the season seemed to slow down his progress. Very unfortunate. Best of luck to him!

If he could actually guard someone they’d win more games. He’s smart so maybe they’ll use his social media skills Cal taught him and rig the election
