Murray State player given technical foul for pointing at teammate, coach ejected

College basketball officiating is back in the news today after a clip from Saturday’s Murray State vs. Morehead State women’s basketball game went viral.

In the first half of the game, Murray State’s Lex Mayes hit a three and pointed at the teammate who gave her the assist, which resulted in a technical foul from the referee. When Murray State head coach Rechelle Turner questioned the call, she was given two technical fouls and ejected from the game. Here’s the video from Cameron Witte:

In the second half, Mayes made a three and instead of pointing to her teammate to thank them for the assist, simply put her hands in the air:

Mayes and I have the same reaction to college basketball officiating this season.

What a complete joke of a ref. This would be unbelievable if we didn’t have video of it

As I’ve said before, it’s such a discrepancy that these unpaid kids/young adults are required to answer to the media after games but these paid, so-called professionals are *not* required to answer media questions. Just an incomprehensible double standard

I suspect the Ref must have thought she was pointing at the DEFENSIVE player who was guarding her, and that she was being un-sportsman like. But between the three of them you would think they could get it corrected.

There has got to be some accountability or it’s only going to get worse.

The sad thing is this wasn’t something that happened really quickly. The refs got together and stuck to their guns on the b.s. technical on the player and then punished the coach for asking about it.

CC, between the refs AND the coaches, it is getting harder to watch college basketball. TV cameras spend as much time on them as they do the players on the court.

“Hey everybody – look at me. I’m an attention whore.” College refs everywhere.

I never saw the second technical on the coach being assessed.

Probably when she was at the scorers table and the dude ran over there and said your outta here

Maybe she got one earlier in the game. I didn’t see a second one in that video.

He called a tech immediately when the coach complained, then when she went over to the female ref and complained he hit her again with the second. Men would happen have done it that fast in a mens game. But I think it is a superiority bias some men have against women that led to this…and a striped shirt and whistle the catalyst. Same sort of stuff that leads a few bad apples with badges and guns to pull similar, sometimes deadlier, behavior.

It seems refs are never held accountable. This guy is a real schiff head and should be suspended. No wonder attendance is down all over the country.

Is there no context that helps this make sense? It certainly makes no sense the way it’s being reported, but that wouldn’t be the first time news was reported without context.

Am with you, Bluebloodtoo. Has to be more than what is being reported. Which doesn’t make sense.

They have to get this stuff fixed once and for all. They have to be accountable. We all make mistakes just fix them.

I guaranty that there was more than just pointing to the same teams player. And for the coach to make a B-Line for the ref on the middle of the floor deserves the T. JMO.

The only thing more to it was the refs need for attention

And this is why teams should be allowed to deny refs access to their games. If it was allowed eventually the ref wouldn’t have anywhere to officiate and would have to be fired. Of course option B is to have refs info be public record and then see how well they call a game.

This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve seen all season, and that’s saying something. I think the ref who made the call should be suspended for the rest of the season while the other 2 should be out a few games as well for going along with such ridiculousness.

Obviously more to the story. There’s no context to the T on the player; no video of her pointing, etc, and its a judgment call by the ref. The first T on the coach was absolutely deserved- you can’t charge up an official. I have no problem with the coach getting that T. Defend your player and move on. She knew she would get
T’d UL. “Colorful language” was probably involved in the 2nd one.

Are a ref or a Morehead fan? Only a whiney brat would t a coach for defending a player the second they try.

Yeah, that looks about like college refs doing their best work in 2020! Hold these turds accountable and fine them or start firing them to weed out the cheating scum that’s killing a beautiful game.

This $#!+ has ruined college athletics. It’s completely unwatchable. Someone needs to take a McDonalds kiosk to the games, because they’d get more right than the jerkwads they find to do these games.

They are THE most sensitive of the sensitive and think they ARE the queens of the court with absolute authority. It’s why I won’t go to games anymore. Haven’t been watching all of th em live if at all for a few years now, and it’s no better on the dvr. Still gets me torqued when they screw someone over
