Mr. Robot’s Monday Morning Wakeup

In this golden age of television, you’re inevitably behind on at least five shows. With endless options to binge, my husband and I are just now getting around to USA’s “Mr. Robot,” a psychological hacking drama that premiered last summer. Five episodes in, we’re hooked. I wouldn’t dare spoil anything, but there are several WTF moments, moments in which I’ve stopped the show to reset all my passwords, and a rekindled appreciation for Christian Slater, who comes off as a grown-up version of his “Heathers” character. (Kids, go watch “Heathers.” It’s awesome.) Also, the main character totally looks like Wilder Treadway.

With the weather turning gray and gross again, I definitely recommend trippy “Mr. Robot.” And then “Jane the Virgin.” And then “Mozart in the Jungle.”

Maybe I shouldn’t watch so much TV…

Here’s what you have to look forward to on this rainy Monday.

John Calipari will be on the SEC Coaches Teleconference

It’s Monday, which means I’ll spend part of my morning listening to John Calipari on the SEC Coaches Teleconference. Cal is up at 11:35 a.m. ET and will be followed directly by Tennessee’s Rick Barnes. Kentucky played admirably at the Phog, but a loss is a loss no matter how you spin it. After his postgame remarks, something tells me we’ll hear a lot about “winning basketball” no matter what questions Calipari gets.

Calipari and players will address the media early this afternoon

Thankfully, the Cats have a chance to bounce back tomorrow night at Tennessee. In turn, Calipari and a few players will address the media this afternoon to preview the game. Check the site later for a live stream and recap.

(Don’t worry, I’m going to Tennessee.)

We all love Drew, but he hasn’t had the best record covering games on the road this season. In fact, he’s 0-4 in road games this year (UCLA, Ohio State, Auburn, Kansas), so if you believe in superstitions, have no fear: I’ll be making the trek to Knoxville tomorrow to ensure Kentucky gets back on the right track. We got this.

The AP and Coaches Polls come out

Kentucky is currently ranked 20th in the AP poll and 19th in the Coaches Poll. Will the Cats move up or down after their loss to Kansas? If I had a ballot (ha!), I’d move them up, but we’ll find out around lunch.

Let this Karl Towns dunk wake you up

Karl had 21 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks in the Timberwolves’ loss to Portland last night, his 13th 20-point, 10-rebound game this season. It was also his 25th double-double of the season. I realize I’m a huge Karl homer, but I’m not sure how you could vote for anyone else for Rookie of the Year.

The Phoenix Suns fired Jeff Hornacek

Eric Bledsoe, Brandon Knight, Archie Goodwin, and Devin Booker are all without a head coach this morning after the Phoenix Suns fired Jeff Hornacek. A month ago, Hornacek was given an ultimatum to improve the team’s performance, and, well, he hasn’t. The Suns have lost 19 of their last 21 games and 14 straight on the road. Ouch. Calipari’s name will inevitably come up in a list of potential replacements, but, by now, we know better than to listen to that crap.

National Signing Day is WEDNESDAY

Enjoy a relaxing morning while you can because National Signing Day is Wednesday. Nick Roush and Freddie Maggard have been working around the clock to get you ready for Stoops and company’s big day, and we’ll be rolling out a lot of material over the next few days. Stay tuned for some inevitable last-minute surprises.

College basketball on TV tonight

Not a lot of games tonight, but I’m sure some of you will be tuned to UNC at Louisville to see if the Cards can rebound after their embarrassing loss to UVA on Saturday.

  • 7 p.m.: #2 North Carolina at #16 Louisville, ESPN
  • 8 p.m.: #13 SMU at Houston, CBS Sports Network
  • 9 p.m.: Texas at #17 Baylor, ESPN

Go Heels?

What do we think of Cam Newton’s pants?

The Panthers star arrived at Super Bowl 50 wearing these Versace zebra pants:

Personally, I’m not a fan, but props to him for being brave enough to wear them. By the way, if you want to pick a pair up for yourself, they cost $850.

KSR starts in one hour

Hornacek kind of got screwed in Phoenix. How can his team improve when his entire starting backcourt (Bledsoe and Knight) is injured? That’s been great for Booker and Goodwin’s careers, but it hasn’t helped the team. Not the coach’s fault when people are hurt.

I wish professional athletes made it just a little tougher to spot the ones who will be broke 10 years out of the league…
