The details of Gregg Marshall’s alleged misconduct at Wichita State continue to emerge, and it’s not looking good for the veteran head coach.

Late last night, CJ Moore and Dana O’Neil of The Athletic dropped a bombshell report that Marshall is under investigation by the school for punching a former player, putting his hands around the neck of a staff member, and cursing out a student who parked in his spot on campus, among other allegations.

Here was just one of the many stories shared in the initial report:

During a practice that season, Shaq Morris attempted to block teammate Zach Brown’s shot. Brown fell awkwardly on the play, and Marshall rushed over and began chewing out Morris for what he deemed a dirty play and then shoved Morris in the back, according to multiple players who witnessed the incident.

Marshall told Morris to “get the fuck out of practice” and then followed him out of the practice gym, two players said. Before Morris could exit the double doors of the gym, Marshall ran up behind Morris and punched Morris between the shoulders near his neck, according to the players. An assistant coach intervened.

Following The Athletic’s breaking news, Jeff Goodman released a detailed report of his own following Stadium’s six-month investigation on the matter that included contact with 36 former and current members of the Wichita State basketball program, including 26 players and ten coaches who have been with Marshall at various points of his 13-year career with the Shockers.

The results? Not good. Not good at all.

“Marshall routinely physically and verbally abused members of the program and demeaned his players with ethnic and racial slurs,” Goodman reported.

“He’s a maniac, a bully,” a former assistant said. “He disrespects people, brings up personal stuff, family, girlfriends.”

Here are some of the allegations Stadium uncovered, which include physical abuse and racial slurs:

  • Marshall punched Morris in the head during a practice in October of 2015, just hours after the player told him his mother was battling cancer.
    • “Shaq walks away and Marshall punches him in the back of the head,” a former player said. “I’m in disbelief. He’s done flagrant stuff, but that was probably the reason I (transferred). I lost respect for him as a man. The worst part is that Shaq had told Marshall earlier that day that his mom had cancer.”

Morris confirmed the incident came just hours after a meeting with Marshall in which he said he broke down in tears while telling Marshall that he had been informed his mother, Tonya Taylor, who later passed away in July of 2019, was battling cancer.

  • Marshall choked former Wichita State assistant Kyle Lindsted at a practice during the 2016-17 season.
  • Marshall told junior forward Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler – who is of Native American descent – “to get back on his horse” and made “Indian howling noises” while in practice during the 2018-19 season.
  • Marshall lifted up the shirt of a former player, grabbed his stomach, and mocked his girth during a practice in the 2015-16 season.
  • Marshall told senior center Jamie Echenique, who is from Colombia, that he would be “a great coffee bean picker” because he struggled catching the ball.
  • Erik Stevenson was wide open and didn’t shoot the ball one day in practice this past season. The player closing out on him defensively was black. While in film session, Marshall paused the film. “I think you’re afraid of brothers, guys raised by their grandparents eating PB&J’s.”

“Basketball was no longer fun for me,” another former player told Goodman. “I didn’t enjoy it. I didn’t even enjoy living life then. … We all hated Marshall so much it made us closer together, like a brotherhood.”

“He’s smart, a great coach,” a former assistant added. “Just a bad person.”

Why has this gone on so LONG…should have been fired years ago…NOONE held accountable these days…and it’s 2020 and we still have people walking around double-minded/reprobate minded men…! No wonder our nation is in shambles…! We need true men of GOD leading coaching and mentoring! Sad.

He’s a good coach who wins a lot of games, and that’s all that matters to most schools.

You don’t have to be religious or believe in god to be a good person and do what’s right. Many so called men of god are terrible human beings and do disgusting things.

Am I the only one that remembers that on the radio show Matt said that Marshall would be on Barnhart’s short list if Calipari left? Just a reminder that no matter how often the famous are in the public eye we never really know what goes on behind closed doors.

Yes but you know that changed after his wife went viral because of being in a drunken shouting stupor at her hubby’s NCAA game.

I can’t imagine he and the AD will be working at Wichita St much longer after this report. He may have gotten away with the physical abuse but the racist remarks should finish him off. It’s unbelievable anyone would play for this joker in the first place.

I can tolerate quite a bit without losing my cool. But one thing I have no patience for is a bully. And I find it truly baffling that so many people put up with them for years at a time. Even more appalling is the number of grown men who put up with that garbage. I don’t care if he’s your boss, your coach, or your landlord. No matter what he can hold over you, you don’t allow a petty frickstick to take you hostage and threaten your well-being. And if you do, expect it to get worse. We all have fear of confrontation and particularly when it could be a violent confrontation, but at some point you have to be prepared to take action. Even if it means nothing more than walking away entirely. Screw that guy.
