Monk, Willis shoot Tennessee out of Rupp Arena

UT-7709

Revenge is a dish best served to Tennessee and the Wildcats gave the Volunteers a big helping of it Tuesday night in the regular season rematch.

Malik Monk led all scorers with 20 points and, get this, a career-high eight rebounds. Monk was helped out by Derek Willis’ 16 points and a combined 25 from De’Aaron Fox and Malik Monk.

Kentucky won big, 83-58.

      Great win.

AG – BIg Board – like him or not – has exposed you as a truly negative human being – if not even worse.

Beating the Vols, regardless of score is always sweet.

bad person for being frustrated when we lose and fed up with football after back to back 2-10 seasons? ok

    • CATandMONKEY
      12:18 am February 15, 2017 Permalink

I see below that you at least in print made an effort. Hell, no doubt I was among the Neg Nans after one of those losses. As far as football, I decided back around 2002 when still living in Lex to just enjoy the tailgating, support the team and that any season with 4 or more wins was a success. I really never expected the turnaround but have always hoped.

Frustration and hating/trolling are two completely different things. Nice try, though.

When UK loses, basketball or football, it bothers me all day, and most of the next. But I don’t jump on here immediately after a loss and start proclaiming “DERP Ulis/Murray team is headed to the NIT, DERP!” when in fact they ended up being a 4-seed. I don’t call for the university to disband the football program and refer to it as the laughing stock of all of football.

If you aren’t a troll, then you have the emotional instability of a toddler…. work on it.

Not if, but when they lose to Arkansas they will be out of Top 25 for good. We don’t need to worry about rankings. Need to worry about missing tournament.

I think they will have 9-10 losses before selection day and be a 7-10 seed. No im not a Cards fan. Our resume is poor. 3-4 really bad losses and 1 decent victory. If more teams keep losing 5-6.

Our football program stinks and will always stink. Who would want to play for us? It gets old that kids say the school they decommit from is a top their list. Just shut up and say I will NOT be going to UK

We suck so bad in football I really forgot that we were even playing a game at all until about 9. We are pathetic in every way possible. From the coaching to the players this football program is pathetic. Can we just take football away from the university It is pointless to play. The only thing our football program is good at is making a bad name for the university and making any team look awesome, How sad is it when your team cannot even win a conference game in 2 seasons. Absolute joke. laughing stock of all of football

Lost to Chattanooga by 13 at home, losses to Ark, Ole Miss and Miss St. They are not a good team but happy to see us do what we should do to them. And Monk, not just 8 rebounds but 8 DEFENSIVE boards. Happy to see that, held UT to 6 off boards. If we can continue that and rotate on D help better they are a tough team to beat.

Once again they lost to Chattanooga who lost to Ark St and Furman. Lost to Miss St who lost to UCF by 25, lost to Lehigh by 14 and lost to ETSU. Tenn beat a Tenn Tech 11-17 team that has losses to UT Martin, Sam Houston and Tenn State. Tenn is 14-12 and 6-7 for a reason, not a good team, lucky to make NIT.

Great game! Still need some work but headed in the right direction. I’d feel a lot more comfy IF we had a back up big off the bench. I don’t understand what’s happened with SKJ. Is he that bad or in the dog house?

    • maximumscott
      9:37 pm February 14, 2017 Permalink

He just hasnt developed. We are fine. Bam doesnt really produce a lot of points for us to be too concerned with out a prime back up. We just need to steal some minutes from someone. Humphries is the guy. We dont loose that much when he comes in for Bam. Mulder, Willis amd Gabriel are enough for the 4 spot.

Monk with 8 boards?!?!?! We won the rebound margin of victory? AND our defense held them to 58? Sounds like the effort is back.

  8. maximumscott
    9:39 pm February 14, 2017 Permalink

This team was bad but they have obviously all bought into Cal. We are more agressive and learning to play good half court offense. Effort and rebounding were there. MONK AND FOX playing better defense! Cal is getting his team ready for primetime March Run!

Per ESPN recap..kentucky made “10 of 11 three point attempts in the first half”. Really? I listened to the first 5 minutes, we missed at least the first 2. Come on!

  12. ClutchCargo

I know math is hard, but Fox and Monk combined for 33, according to the box score.

  13. cats42301
    4:32 am February 15, 2017 Permalink

There was a big difference between Willis’ 16pts and Monk’s 20 pts. Willis shot 60% 6-10, Monk shot 38% 7-18. Willis played a good game, Monk proved that if you take enough shots you’ll eventually be top scorer. Sorry, I’m glad the Cats won but Monk didn’t exactly shoot the Vols out of Rupp but he did have 8 rebs!

    • Catsby80

shooters have to shoot. monk and willis were 4-7 from the 3pt line each. monk also goes to the rim more and attempts more contested layups; whereas, willis hardly ever goes into the paint. if Monk shot 7-18 every night, this team would be in a pretty damn good spot.

    • CATandMONKEY
      8:19 am February 15, 2017 Permalink

To whom do you give the ball at the end of the game? Willis isn’t a terrible choice based on stats but my money is on Monk.
Derek played a great game and he deserves minutes. But we have seen equal performance at the 4 from Wenyen with frequently better rebounding. We are lucky to have all of these guys.

The key is to get optimum performance from all the major players, every game. Part of that is on the coaches. I will hold them somewhat responsible since that is what we should expect for high-dollar salaries. I have seldom been completely disappointed.

Great win but still room to grow and kick @$$ through April.
