Monk has played 77 minutes since his last rebound

KSR-0763

Malik Monk, who played more minutes than anyone, failed to grab a single rebound Tuesday night against LSU.

On Saturday, Malik Monk, who played more minutes than anyone, failed to grab a single rebound against Florida.

That is now two consecutive games and 77 minutes of basketball action without a rebound for Monk. He last got a rebound with two minutes to go in regulation against Georgia a week ago.

Now please tell me how it is humanly possible for the most athletic player on the court to not have a rebound. He should accidentally have two or three fall in his lap over the course of two games, especially with the minutes he logs; yet Monk has zero boards in his last 77 minutes.

After the game, Coach Cal said, “If he’s not going to rebound the ball, he is going to have to be in there less.”

That’ll never happen, but good grief there’s no excuse to be so bad on the glass. He must literally be trying to avoid the basketball after a missed shot. There’s no other explanation.

    But he’s still smiling.

Contrast that with the future SEC player of the year Sindarious Thornwell’s 44 pts and 21 rebound night. OK, he is 2 inches taller than Monk, but come on.

He leaks out for fast breaks on defense. On offense, he leaks out for defense. He never goes into the paint after a shot goes up.

Exactly. Leaking out worked early in the year for a variety of reasons so it wasn’t a problem. Doesn’t work as well anymore. Teams know they need to get back and they do.

Looking at Chad Ford’s Mock Draft 3.0, he says this about Malik:
“Dynamic scorer and shooter. Monk is the most electric scorer to come into the draft in some time. He can be streaky, but when he gets going he’s difficult to stop. Plus, he has a nose for the ball, great rebounder for his size”

We dont meed Monk to be a rebounder!!!!!! We need him to defend better and drive to the rack more often than shoot a contestes jumper

We just got out rebounded by 25 to UF and some idiot thinks someone should not be a rebounder. All 5 should be blocking out and rebounding but before that they should play team defense. Cal showed him tonight, he sat all of 3 plus minutes, that will send a message.

You sound stupid. Rebounding is a part of basketball. We’re not asking him to grab 10 rebounds a game. Just at least put effort into it.

Sit Monk down until he starts doing what you have coached him to do. To say we do not need him to rebound is a joke. If you are on the floor , you need to rebound. Period.

For all the bloviating about how UK fans are the most knowledgeable in basketball…

Here is a kid who plays his ass off and, as a freshman, is leading the league in scoring. Who put up 47 points against UNC-CH and whose coach has practically abandoned him as an offensive focus of the offensive in order to establish a slow, low post offense. And we are complaining about his rebounding. We should be complaining that he is not getting 30 shot/game. I’ll trade off Malik’s rebounds/game for Bam’s points/game or the number of baskets Bam gives up a game due to his unwillingness/inability to play defense.

Good grief, there is a lot to complain about, but Monk’s rebounding? Really?

You mad drew? Coming from a guy who claims to bleed blue, you sure are full of negativity these days. It’s frustrating, to be sure, but as literally one of the top two guys who run a U.K. sight, you sure like to point out flaws. Is it because you had to sleep in your car? Or, is it because you’re no different than the terrible fans you’ve bashed in the past?

It’s all very simple, really: Rebounds don’t get you on SportsCenter. But a huge scoring outburst does.

Rebounding and defense are effort indicators. You draw the conclusion.

I’m sorry but I will no longer read Coach Drew’s articles, he has missed his calling somewhere along the way.
