Missouri offers Cuonzo Martin head coaching job (UPDATE: He’s taking it)

Could Cuonzo Martin be headed back to the SEC? Jeff Goodman is reporting that Missouri has offered Martin the job and Martin, now the head coach at Cal, is reportedly mulling it over.

Martin left Tennessee for Cal in 2014 after a rough three years in Knoxville and has made a home for himself in Berkeley, going 62-39 and landing five-star prospects like Jaylen Brown (the #3 pick in last year’s draft) and Ivan Rabb. Before he was at Tennessee, Martin spent three years at Missouri State and also hails from East St. Louis, Illinois, so he’s familiar with the area.

Personally, if I’m Cuonzo, I stay at Cal, but it would be interesting to see what he could do what that job.

UPDATE: According to Evan Daniels, Martin has informed his team he’s taking another job.

Guess we’ll see you soon, Cuonzo.

UPDATE x 2: Jeff Goodman is now reporting that Martin is in the final stages of negotiating a 7-year deal with Mizzou, and is expected to sign it tonight. Seven years!

UPDATE x 3: It’s officially official:

    Why

He’s tired of all the protesters in Berkley. They block traffic and set fires, but don’t show up to watch his team play. Missouri fans show up when given a good product on the court. Come to think of it Missouri did do some protesting and enrollment was down 8% last year. So now I’m confused…

The far left wingers that are the majority in that town could care less about college basketball…

    Smart move for Mizzou.

Disagree. With the talent that he has had at Cal he has underperformed. Gregg Marshall would have been a better hire.

Steve Kerr would have been a great hire too, but they aren’t getting him or Gregg Marshall. It’s obvious he’s not leaving for a smaller job.

What makes you think Gregg Marshall would have taken on that train wreck?? The only reason Martin is doing so appears to be because he is from the area. Missouri is not UK; they can’t just go get any coach they want.

Also two of Cal’s best players were out injured for a good portion of this season, including Rabb.

Marshall is not taking a job like Missouri. He’s holding out for one of the big jobs.

Ok so maybe Marshall is out of their league but he is making a move soon.
Just think they jumped the gun on the carousel and made the wrong decision. And a seven year deal is ridiculous.

Steve Kerr? Who’s ass did you pull that out off?

SeC is hiring some decent coaches. It wont be long before we are a better conference in the middle

    Marcus Lee is coachless now.

Marcus Lee made the move to be closer to his family which doesn’t change with a coaching change, and maintains a good relationship with the BBN, similar to Kyle Wiltjer. Only nasty people attacked Kyle Wiltjer and it is the same with Marcus Lee – nasty people, not people who are fans with any credibility. Kyle came back and was greeted by big crowds of UK fans for his autograph tour even after he had been away for years at Gonzaga.

I wonder if that Cuonzo-era UT kid with sasquatch feet will come as an assistant coach?

Marcus Lee should be allowed to come back to UK. That’s some bull-ish.

Nothing wrong with a man wanting his job to be closer to where he’s grown up. If he’s happy that makes Mizzou a better job for him.

I take it you didn’t enjoy that Final Four appearance we had that almost certainly would not have happened without him, where he stepped up in a big way after Willie Cauley-Stein was injured?
