John Calipari and Rick Pitino’s relationship is frosty to say the least, which, of course, makes it entertaining as hell to watch. Calipari called in to the Mike Francesa Show today and while describing the team’s plan after the Ohio State game, Francesa hopped on the chance to talk about Cal’s relationship with Rick Pitino, going as far to get Cal to commit to doing an 30-minute interview with him and Rick sometime this season.
Here’s the entire exchange.
“I give them a Christmas break. This one’s going to be a little bit longer. After New York, we’re all going to take like three days, and then in a couple of days we’ll play Louisville, who is really good, by the way–”
“That’s always a fun fest,” Francesa interjected. “The fun part is you two before the game, that’s the fun part, it really is.”
“What, seeing how we shake hands?” Cal asked.
“That’s a good thing. I should go down there and stand between you and make you guys hug,” Francesa said while Calipari laughed. “I think I’m going to come down and interview both of you before the game.”
“Why are you an instigator,” Cal asked. “You light the fire and walk away and everybody says, ‘Where’s Mike?'”
“If I come down, will you agree to sit down and do a half hour with you, me, and him together in an interview?”
“I would,” Cal said. “I would, but that’s me.”
“I’m going to hold you to it. Okay, I’m going to call him and ask him to do it and he’ll do it then we’ll do it. Half hour together. You, me, Rick, half hour together.”
“Alright,” Cal said.
By the end of the interview, Francesa said he might push the interview to “a slow day in February,” but remained committed to doing it.
Screw presents, that’s what I want for Christmas.
