Michael Wilbon isn’t so sure Coach Cal will be back at UK next season

Today on PTI, Michael Wilbon said, “No, I’m not presuming that he is necessarily going back to Kentucky because we know he has problems with the expectations and the spotlight shining on him and his kids.”

“I think that Coach Cal is fed up with all the scrutiny in Lexington. If I was him, I would leave.”

Is this guy serious?!!!

Jesus this is like the second or third year he has said Calipari will leave. Give it up Wilbon, he isn’t going to coach the Cubs, you can put that wet dream to rest.

Is it just me or is he just desperate for Cal to leave? His success at UK is making him crazy. The amount of attention on these kids is just about the same as it is at Alabama for football. Believe it or not, Bama fans may be even more obsessive. I don’t see analysts and commentators clamoring for Saban to “get out”. Ugh!

He’s just too proud to admit he’s wrong. He said it after the championship loss and everyone was up in arms. This thing goes to 2 and toodaloo, Cal will be here for another 10 years.

What is Wilbon’s problem? Is he stupid for a living? There is no way Coach Cal is leaving before next season. All the open NBA coaching jobs are crappy. Cal is not going to walk in to a losing situation again.

Exactly! Plus, in that segment, the guys said, “Even if you win in the NBA, you could still get fired.” How is that a positive? Why would Cal want to be in that position??? He’s gotta enjoy all the love he gets from the BBN>

I don’t even know why these butthurts continue with this garbage. Cal isn’t going ANYWHERE antime soon. In his interviews, he always tells people “Kentucky isn’t for everyone,” and that’s the truth. For all the universities lay claim that they have “the program,” UK IS the program. Calipari knows this. When Cal loses his passion, then he’ll leave. I don’t see that happening any time soon.

All these shows are the same(First Take, PTI, Mike and Mike, etc.). They only really want to talk Football. They only talk college basketball in March and April. They have no idea what they are talking about. He has no idea what kind of scrutiny Cal is getting in Lexington. He is simply basing this theory on Tubby getting tired of it. Stick to Football on these shows, everything else they are guessing, no actual expertise or knowledge of anything.

Wilbon has often said he has hated UK since the Texas Western game because he has always seen us in racial terms. It chaps his behind to see us succeed. He is only hoping that Cal leaves as he is just speaking out of hate.

Truth teller- You are a moron! Wilbon has stated on numerous occasions that he has disliked UK since his youth because of his perception of Rupp being a racist. That is not me bringing in race but Wilbon himself. Since he hates us he cannot stand seeing the program succeed. What makes it worse for him is that he is friends with Calipari. Therefore, it is logical that he keeps calling for Cal to leave a program that he will always hate.

    • Hill
      9:53 pm April 26, 2014 Permalink

Can someone tell Wilbon that Coach Rupp died a long time ago and the Texas Western game was back in the 60’s. To hold on to something for that long is demented. Texas Western won that game, not sure what he is upset about.

  10. John Ellis

Wilbon sees through the ‘hip operation’ – it’s a RUSE to cover Cal’s negotiations with the Lakers, held in an ice palace in the North Pole where he takes potential recruits and hypnotizes them into joining his evil program.

Wilbon needs to do some research and find out Rupp tried to sign Unseld, who would have played in that Texas Western game, and Rupp nearly left the SEC when the racial problems prevented Unseld from taking the offer (his mother was worried for his safety). That’s two other UK titles that should have been.

    • mlvei
      8:58 am April 26, 2014 Permalink

Assuming Wilbon has a problem with the UK/Texas Western game, would he have the same problem if Duke (with an equally all white team) had defeated UK in the semifinal game and played Texas Western in the final? I attended UK shortly after this and can attest to racism there, but I KNOW UK wasn’t the only school in the south or elsewhere with this problem. Check out who integrated the SEC in football (UK) and even in basketball. Was UK too slow to integrate; yes. Were they the worst in this regard; of course not; not even close. From friends who knew Rupp and what I knew at the time, describing him as a racist is ridiculous and misses the real point. Rupp was largely to totally interested in Rupp and his interests. All else fell far behind. The revisionists and spin doctors on this “Brown vs. Board of Education” basketball game honestly need to revisit, in a serious scholarly manner, the entire issue if they are interested in what was really going on then. If not, then just spin away to whatever prejudice Wilbon and others are dragged down with.

In college Cal coaches up to 40 games a year. In the NBA they have 82 not counting playoffs. Cal will make just as much money coaching KY than he would in NBA. He likes to go on talk shows, write books, and talk with people and be a celebrity and with UK he has time for that. He can’t in the NBA.

I don’t think Anyone would want Cal to ever leave. He is the best we have ever had. He has a lifetime contract.

the playful north american river otter is equally at home in the water and on land. it makes its home in a burrow near the waters’ edge, and can thrive in river, lake, swamp or estuary ecosystems. otter abodes feature numerous tunnels, one of which usually allows them to come and go from the water. these otters swim by propelling themselves with their powerful tails and flexing their long bodies. they also have webbed feet, water repellent fur to keep them dry and warm and nostrils and ears that close in the water. they remain active in winter using ice holes to surface and breathe, and they can hold their breath underwater for some eight minutes. river otters, members of the weasel family, hunt at night and feed on whatever may be available. fish are a favorite food, but they also eat amphibians, turtles and crayfish. on land river otters can bound and run quite well, if not quite as effectively as they swim.

So, he has been his most successful at UK, and he does not seem to be slowing down any time soon. Plus, when people give him crap, he has BBN to have his back.
Coach Cal can handle BBN’s scrutiny, and succeed.

To claim Cal is tired of the attention UK fans give to basketball seems ridiculous, based on the evidence. If Wilbon is correct in this, why did Cal go around the Commonwealth after 2012 showing the trophy; why does he constantly say the fans are crazy and he loves it; why does he promote himself and the program endlessly during the off season? If he is burned out, why go on this massive book promotional tour? If Cal desires the NBA, why does he say the UK job is his dream job? Why does he say if the NCAA gets rid of the one and done rule he will finish his working career at UK? I am aware people make statements and either change their mind or deliberately mislead, but does Cal want to leave with the, arguably best, and certainly deepest talent next year? With the most difficult position for him to teach an already capable Andrew Harrison at point guard? With the possibility/likelihood of starting NO freshmen? Now, against this evidence what does Wilbon present to support his assertions? Any facts; or merely his opinion?

His credibility has sunk to new lows.

First he says making the playoffs doesn’t guarantee that you don’t get fired then he says you have more longevity in the NBA than Kentucky. How many NBA coaches have been at the same team since 09? I know Pops has. I don’t care if these guys are anti-UK. What upsets me is that they are below average in terms of intelligence. Bring on Jay Bilas and ask him about Cal leaving. Next thing is going to be Saban going to the Browns, right.

95% of the comments on this thread are laughably stupid and ignorant. Wilbon has been a successful sports columnist for the Washington F-ing Post for over 20 years. He has a popular, smart TV show on a national cable network. And you anonymous rednecks are calling him racist and a moron because he dared to suggest Calipari might leave your school of worship. Keep making Kentucky proud, dip shits.

Truer words have never been spoken . He plays the li’l bro to the NBA players who tries to offer some kind-of ” Knowledgeable ” commentary……… All he is is a fan , that like many others could never play on an upper level but thinks he can critique the play of others . Its his “OPINION” and much like anyone else , always subjective > IN OTHER WORDS ,PUNK AZZ HATERS GONNA HATE , HOLLA !

I have always liked Wilbon, but he has gone off the cliff about this one. He is speaking purely out of opinion with no facts to back it up. Those guys saying Calipari doesn’t care about the kids. That is directly opposite to everything Cal has done and said about what his program is about. Wilbon has gotten a burr in his saddle about UK and is doing all he can to run Cal off to the NBA. Typical ESPN idiot.

Does Wilbon really think Cal would let all those UK players return without telling them he was leaving? And do you think now that they are all returning he would up and bail on them? Use your common sense Wilbon…oh wait, I forgot.
