Mark Emmert says NCAA Tournament will be held without fans due to coronavirus

If March Madness happens without fans in the stands, does it really happen at all? We’re about to find out. NCAA President Mark Emmert just announced that the 2020 NCAA Tournament will be held without fans in attendance over fears of the coronavirus outbreak.

Here is the statement from the NCAA:

The NCAA COVID-19 Advisory Panel recognizes the fluidity of COVID-19 and its impact on hosting events in a public space.  COVID-19 is spreading rapidly in the United States, and behavioral risk mitigation strategies are the best option for slowing the spread of this disease.  This is especially important because mildly symptomatic individuals can transmit COVID-19.  Given these considerations shown on the Full Report, coupled with a more unfavorable outcome of COVID-19 in older adults – especially those with underlying chronic medical conditions – we recommend against sporting events open to the public.  We do believe sport events can take place with only essential personnel and limited family attendance, and this protects our players, employees, and fans.

And from Mark Emmert:

The NCAA continues to assess the impact of COVID-19 in consultation with public health officials and our COVID-19 advisory panelBased on their advice and my discussions with the NCAA Board of Governors, I have made the decision to conduct our upcoming championship events, including the Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, with only essential staff and limited family attendance. While I understand how disappointing this is for all fans of our sports, my decision is based on the current understanding of how COVID-19 is progressing in the United States. This decision is in the best interest of public health, including that of coaches, administrators, fans and, most importantly, our student-athletes. We recognize the opportunity to compete in an NCAA national championship is an experience of a lifetime for the students and their families. Today, we will move forward and conduct championships consistent with the current information and will continue to monitor and make adjustments as needed.

What a weird time to be alive.

Very sad. Will be historic and memorable tournament for all the wrong reasons.

But it’s probably the right decision.

Actually, it’s not. Obama didn’t even think about doing anything for the H1N1 virus until there were 20,000 hospitalizations and 1,000 deaths. It had a higher rate of mortality, and when it was all done, 60 MILLION Americans got the virus. Compare that to this virus which has infected a mere 120,000 people or so WORLD WIDE, and whose spread is slowing where the outbreak first occurred. Furthermore, kids are basically immune, and the average age of death is 80 which is past the life expectancy. It kills sick old men. Historians are going to look back at this and wonder what in the world is going on with the insanity.

People kill me in this world today. Scared of their own shadow. Go ahead and listen to every media outlet known to man on what and how to think. People forget they are in the business of ratings. Making people fear things is great for business.

Well, look around. Across the entire world events like this are being cancelled or altered to minimize risk of spreading the virus.

Greedy af corporations that have a LOT of money on the line are still making these decisions. That should tell you that they, at least, are taking it seriously.

I know it’s popular right now in this country to politicize this and act like it’s all a media conspiracy against trump but I think anyone who looks around can tell this is a world issue. Not everything revolves around the US.

This is the best response on here. There are going to be billions of dollars lost worldwide. And the people losing the money are the ones making these decisions. Obviously there is a greater risk than some want to accept. This has nothing to do with politics or the media.

Fear spreads faster than any disease. Are you talking about the same H1N1 the CDC overestimated? So you think one party is better than another? That’s some funny stuff.

The coronavirus outbreak is more severe than the 2009 outbreak of H1N1, or swine flu. That illness infected between 700 million and 1.4 billion people worldwide but only had a mortality rate of 0.02%. Compare that to up to 3% for this. Vastly different and much much more contagious and faster spreading.

I just wonder how much this affects UK chances. Most teams it probably doesn’t impact that much but with how well BBN travels and can inspire team in some games I am afraid there will be a game we need a boost from our fans who will not be there.

    • CJKAssassin123

Agreed however it also could help UK with communication on the floor.

    • Kyfanfav1984
      5:17 pm March 11, 2020 Permalink

True but I really think this could affect a close game otherwise we may win because of our fans. I know fans do not score points or grab rebounds but it cant be understated when on neutral courts we usually have a 60 to 40 ratio of fans and I really think that does help these young kids sometimes.

The flu kills more people, actually. 30,000 or so here in the US on average annually. Basketball season is pretty much flu season and u know what we don’t do? Cancel it. Yea a rapid spread would tax our ventilator supplies and ICU beds and we don’t want a spike but this isn’t Wuhan, it’s a free country and we get to decide what risks we take. I fly every week. Do u risk getting sick on planes? Sure. I accept that risk. If these nanny state chicken little purveyors of doom had their way anything they deem too risky for u would be forbidden, which would pretty much have ruled out any advance in science and industry in our history since they all involved risk.

  23. VirginiaCat
    5:24 pm March 11, 2020 Permalink

I would like to see a risk/benefit assessment regarding the tournament. Yes, the participation numbers are large, but what is the projected impact on spreading the virus? Should movie houses be closed down? Gyms? Retail businesses? Is going to Costco, where there are thousands of customers entering and exiting throughout the day, inherently less dangerous than a basketball game? If there is empirical data to justify closing the NCAA tournament to fans, fine, but lets see something that makes that case.

    • Kyfanfav1984
      5:53 pm March 11, 2020 Permalink

Yes people go to Costco and movies and gyms but that is people who live in the same area. The problem here is you will have 8 sets of fans going to one city and then returning to the cities of their teams. I still think it is probably a little overreaction but I can see their concern as well.

As far as conspiracies go, the media creates all of them to place all blame on Trump. I’m a republican yes but I’m not a huge Trump supporter either. If we could get Bill Clinton back in office tomorrow he would get my vote but this “new” liberal/democrat party makes me sick. The media are not cancelling these events. You think the libs shut down all the events in China and quarantined Italy? No! Its medical experts, scientists and politicians, including Republicans. It’s logical people who look at facts and analyze data. It’s people who cant be liable for neglect or hosting an event during a confirmed communicable disease pandemic.

It’s not a conspiracy. You realize that the people who tell you it’s media bias and a conspiracy are themselves the media? Think about that. They ceaselessly spread this “It’s us vs. them” narrative to weak-minded individuals just so you stay scared and angry and united in blissful stubborn stupidity. Meanwhile the divide is widening and destroying this Country.

Always interesting to see that all of the brilliant coaches, politicians, and otherwise genius people who comment here are also trained medical doctors and virologists.

No one loves this. It sucks. Until there is a cure or a vaccine, it is selfish to put others at risk just because you don’t care.

No doctor will ever tell you to just shake off a scratch or a bruise, or rub some dirt on it and move on. No lawyer will ever tell you to ignore a meaningless law. No insurance agent will tell you that you have enough coverage.
