Malik Monk named Kentucky SEC Freshman of the Week

Congratulations are in order for Malik Monk, who was just named SEC Freshman of the Week. Monk was the star of Kentucky’s big win over Michigan State, hitting seven threes en route to a career-high 23-point performance. Last night vs. Duquesne, Monk had 14 points, including two threes, two rebounds, and a block.

This is the second straight week a Kentucky freshman has won the award. Last week, De’Aaron Fox took home the hardware for his performances in Kentucky’s opening games. This is the second time Kentucky freshmen have won SEC Freshman of the Week in consecutive weeks to open the season; Eric Bledsoe and John Wall opened the 2009-10 season with five straight accolades.

Here are Monk’s highlights from the Michigan State game:

I’m setting the over/under on how many weeks Kentucky players DON’T win SEC Freshman of the Week at 2. Chime in accordingly.

Next week: BAM! (just had to go there)

Seriously, awesome week by Monk. I’m looking forward to Adebayo’s breakout game(s). Once he gets on track this team could be ready for prime time. Even though we’re currently seeing a heavy dose of pack line, defenses are closing quickly on shooters because our bigs are still a work in progress. Adebayo breaking out will keep defenses home on him AND pull defenders off the other bigs.
