Malik Monk is Due for a Big Game

*knock on wood*

During the last two seasons, Kentucky fans have been blessed to see historic shooting in the month of February.  Devin Booker and Jamal Murray couldn’t miss from behind the three-point line.  Entering February 2017, Malik Monk was poised to do much of the same.  Instead, he’s not been his usual self.

Since Monk scored 37 points to lead a De’Aaron Fox-less team to an overtime win over Georgia on January 31, Monk has only scored 20 points or more twice.  What changed? Florida and the month of February.

Entering the first Florida game, Monk averaged 22.6 points per game.  He’s exceeded that number just once in UK’s six February games.  During the six-game stretch his shooting percentage dramatically dipped from 49.6 percent to 37.6 percent.

Monk’s scoring deficiencies have been mentioned less than the struggles of his backcourt peers.  The Cats have shown a variety of problems, most of which can be healed by Monk’s scoring.

Can he turn it around?  Of course.  Shooters shoot.  He’s just saving all the good ones for March.

Monk hasn’t surpassed 20 points in the last two games.  At Kentucky, Monk has never gone three consecutive games without scoring 20 points or more.  He’s due.
