Louisville’s Chinanu Onuaku can’t be serious with this

Chinanu Onuaku, one of the seven or eight UofL players Rick Pitino expects to go to the NBA (), is competing in the U19 World Championship and he showed off a new shooting form at the foul line in this morning’s game.

Watch as Onuaku goes granny-style on a free throw attempt:

It gets better, guys. At the U19 training center earlier this month, Onuaku said he plans to shoot granny-style all season long. Even better, Rick Pitino told him to do it.

According to Jason King over at Bleacher Report, UK’s Isaiah Briscoe, watching Onuaku for the first time, asked, “Is he being serious right now?”

Yes, Isaiah. This is real.

Who cares how he shoots them if they go in…..maybe Marcus Lee should consider it. I give him credit for trying to do something to improve. There is no reason any player should not make at least 60-65 of 100.

see if you can shoot a tennis ball or maybe a softball into a goal 60 out of 100 the ball is so little in their hands is what makes it hard

GroundControl – It’s not just large hands for big guys. It’s also the relative release point, how much arc is utilized (vs. shooting a line drive etc.) beyond just the basic mechanics of shooting a basketball.

Some big guys are pretty good but a lot of them struggle. Shooting underhanded can effectively address many of the issues that are faced (i.e. it avoids having to rest the ball in your palm, it improves your arc, it improves the angle of approach to the basket etc.) A lot of it is simple physics.

The exceptions are ‘people who can shoot.’

It’s the exact same percentage of people with small hands. You can either shoot or you can’t. Most people can’t.

JPS adds in some details that certainly play a role (and they play a role regardless of your height and hand size).

Here’s my take on it. (Hint: it doesn’t include shooting it like a whuss)

Adolph Rupp required all players except seniors to do underhanded free throws and did ok.

Laugh if you want, but I wish Lee or Riddick or Willie would have done this a long time ago. Can you imagine the hay Willie could have made with this? He’d be the talk of the sports world, and he could have a lot of fun with it. Personally, I hope this paves a path for any number of poor free throw shooters to try something new.

Don’t hate haha. I think a lot of big men that have trouble from the charity stripe could benefit from the granny shot. Actual shooters should stick to shooting but I think low post players with a bad stroke need to take this more seriously.

Look up Rick Barry, one of the best free throw shooters ever. All were underhanded. It does help some, and is comical.

Sometimes we are too quick to make fun of things. Rick Barry lead the NBA shooting that way. I am great shooting that way in games of HORSE. If the UL player gets good with that style, why not?

We should praise Louisville and CRP for being on the cutting edge of basketball training. What a brilliant move to replicate something that one player did 45 years ago.

CRP is going to develop this dude into a lottery pick!

It’s about time someone had the guts to shoot it underhanded. Good for him. Shaq was told many times that if he went underhanded he would have won a lot more games but he didn’t have the guts.

It just so happens he’s under the age of 19, and they needed a center. Desperately.

      Louisville sucks. Thanks for visiting.

If this helps his percentage it’s smart… I’m not gonna make fun of it until
Marcus Lee shoots over 26 percent or whatever it was…
The granny shot may make a comeback for these terrible free throw shooters on
    College and NBA teams..

Its amazing how many people want to turn basketball back in to what it was in the 40’s. Right down to the uniforms.

And we wonder why Kentucky is ranked so low in so many categories nationally. We have too many people wanting to drag us back to the Stone Age.

John Wooden said that shooting granny free throws is the best way to shoot them fundamentally correct. He didn’t teach them to shoot this way because of what people would say. I say kudos to a young man that wants to do whatever he can in order to shoot better.

Drew, if it improves his game then who cares? Last I checked “style” points don’t get counted in the score pad – only made baskets do. I like to poke fun at UofL as much as the next guy, but this post just makes you sound shrill and desperate…

You play to win the game. If going granny helps him go from 47% to say 65%, it’s worth looking a bit silly.
