Louisville Brought The Fight To Bowling Green

Things are getting chippy here in Bowling Green as an altercation erupted in the closing minutes of the first half. Montrezl Harrell threw a punch after being knocked down and was tossed from the game as a result. While nothing is official yet, it looks like Harrell will be sitting out Louisville’s game against Cal State Northridge on Tuesday night.

Stay classy cards.

Announcers said Louisville has a game before Kentucky and that is the game from which he will be banned, not the UK game.

CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE is UL next game

Doesn’t matter. He will either foul out or get thrown out of UK game. Cats will frustrate the hell out of him. He puts on his mean face and plays out of control. Makes Boogie look like a Teddy Bear.

You KNOW he will only have a one game ban

yep because that is the NCAA rule, not because they play us in 2nd game.

NCAA RULE: A flagrant technical foul involves unsportsmanlike conduct that is extreme in nature, or excessive or severe contact during a dead ball. Fighting is also considered a flagrant technical foul.
The penalty for a flagrant technical foul in NCAA and NFHS rules is immediate ejection of the offending player, plus two free throws and a throw-in for the opposing team. The ejected player is also suspended during the next game played by his or her team.
I don’t know what he was thrown out for but it looked like a dead ball incident so flagrant tech is probably what was called.

Glad UL has game before Cats. Too many excuses otherwise.

It’s hard to imagine how the cards fans will spin this as UKs fault…

I like Harrell, but Louisville sucks. 7 days cards, 7 days.

So, if Cal State’ Northridge couldn’t make the game😜😜, then he would have to sit for the UK game?? Hmmmm….perhaps a problem with the CSN plane??

Notice that the ref got smashed in the face and doubles over in the first picture. Could that make it more serious, even if inadvertent?

they showed the replay a bunch on tv, the ref was never hit by Harrell, he run into a player or something with his elbow.

A respectable coach would kick him off the team. So we know that won’t happen.

They have sucked from 3 and the foul line until today. Knew they would gain their shooting eye before we play them.

I know that I am going to catch a bunch of grief for this but from what little I see here I think most players would come up swinging if surrounded and menaced by the other team while laying on the floor. I hope he plays against UK. I don’t want any extra excuses from UL because I know they are already tuning up to whine about calls. 2nd I want UK to get some kind of challenge before the SEC. We may lose in the SEC but if we do lose it will likely be from lack of focus. I don’t see us getting many if any real competitive games when both teams are focused.

To my eyes 15, 52 and possibly 5 and 2 from Western should get the same fate as Harrell, whatever that is. http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/12/20/louisvilles-montrezl-harrell-throws-a-punch-as-tempers-flare-against-western-kentucky/

I don’t see how they didn’t instigate this one. I know if the guy on the floor were a UK player we would be saying that.

There’s no way to know what anyone was saying on the floor, if they’d been jawing at Harrell or what, but I didn’t see anything there out of the ordinary when it comes to defenders reaching in for the ball.

Harrell seems to have just gotten really, really defensive about being surrounded and hands reaching in. The guy he punched doesn’t look to be punching him or anything. I don’t see any kicks or grabs at his head. He just gets up swinging because he’s frustrated and had been swarmed by defenders. There are a lot of players who get super upset when anyone dares to grab at the ball when they’re on the floor.

I personally think refs need to call more fouls on guys who dive on top of other players to get loose balls, but that wasn’t even the case here. Harrell went to the floor when he lost the ball and his energy and anger got the better of him. We’ve seen him get into foul trouble for the same kind of petulance against UK, and he should get T’d up frequently as much as he flexes and stares down opponents after dunks. I like his energy and talent, but he plays like the kind of thug UL fans always accused Boogie of being.

Watched it again and no one did anything in that video to goad Harrell into throwing a punch. There could’ve been previous contact in the game or a lot of jawing, but there’s nothing in that play to justify it.

A little body contact on the block outs, which is normal. Harrell gets the board, as he often does. (Dude’s a beast rebounder.) WKU slaps the ball away, WKU doesn’t quite have it on floor and Harrell kneels down to grab it. WKU player looks to maybe have it but ref blows whistle. Then as often happens and leads to players getting upset in all sports, the WKU player gets up while partially underneath Harrell. This sends Harrell over backwards a bit (WKU player was partially under the legs of Harrell who was already on his back). The WKU player Harrell soon hit was reaching down, swatting at Harrell’s hands a little, or maybe even trying to help him up (which is just stupid to try to do when the opponent is a hot head who just turned the ball over). Harrell then gets up and punches the guy. He could’ve just pushed him. Might have still got him ejected, but it would’ve been a lot more fitting than punching someone. Maybe the WKU kid he hit was jawing at him, but he wasn’t even the one who upended Harrell a little.

This happened because Harrell is super pumped up all the time and didn’t control his emotions after he lost the ball. Assuming he’s back for our game, unless he just absolutely dominates, we’re going to see him blow up like this again after WCS stuffs him or Dakari takes a hard charge as Harrell goes up to showboat dunk.

#14 on his own team gets pushed to the floor by this thug. This guy loses control real easy and watch how he acts against the Cats unless he faces a multiple game suspension. He won’t likely play half the first half against the Cats when he gets 2 quick fouls. He is WAY over hyped as a player.

Ironically UL fans always complain about us getting the favorable whistle (none of them seem to realize Rick’s whole defensive philosophy at UL is to handcheck, which they get away with too much). Harrell plays like the way they always claimed Boogie did, which is thuggish. Don’t get me wrong, Harrell has a lot of talent and fire. But he lacks self-control and he showboats. Boogie also has/had self-control issues and would retaliate quickly, which gave him a rep as a troublemaker (never mind that it was always retaliation and not starting stuff). Harrell, though, flexes and hangs on the rim and stares down defenders, trying to show he’s a bad, bad man. If he ever quits that and just realizes his play already shows he’s bad ass, dude will be a lot better player. He got tossed from this game and rides the pine against teams like us because he can’t control his emotions when playing against faster or bigger players who get the better of him once in a while.

Harrell is kind of like combining the swagger of Ramel Bradley, the reactiveness of Boogie, and the motor of MKG all in the same body. Kid needs to grow up.

It apears #14 uavel impeded Montrezzl from actually fully serving his punch. And uavel thinks they want to schedule IU. They can’t even handle Western in a heated environment; Got only knows what would happen on the floor in Bloomington. Simply ratchet. It’ll be like the ’70s with uavel and Memphis when the hate was severe.

Wow, Pitino usually saves thug-ball for us. He had to break it out early this year just to beat WKU! UofL basketball program continues to be a joke.

    • HanOfTheBluegrass
      3:05 pm December 20, 2014 Permalink

Pitino’s whole gameplan is to hand check. How thuggish the game gets depends on how the other team reacts. If they’re good enough, they play above it. If they’re not good enough or they have a chip on their shoulder, they give it back to Louisville. Then Louisville player’s get indignant and this kind of thing happens.

What I take away from the video? If the Egyptian can’t handle an off-balance teammate, how in the hell is going to handle any of our bigs?
