Let’s Meet the Starters: Albany

The Cats take on the Albany Great Danes in about two hours, which gives us just enough time to meet the starters. Let’s get to it.

#0 EVAN SINGLETARY
G, 6’1″, Senior; 13 ppg, 3.6 rpg
Singletary is the second leading scorer behind Peter Hooley and started all 33 games at point guard for the Great Danes last season. Along with Hooley, he’s got a hot hand from the outside, connecting on 40% of his threes last season.

#1 RAY SANDERS
G, 6’4″, Senior; 9.7 ppg, 4.6 rpg
Sanders is a senior from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and prides himself on defense. He really liked this vine Drew posted of Willie Cauley-Stein’s dunk over Cincinnati’s Quadri Moore in March:
“@DrewFranklinKSR: RIP Quadri Moore. #HeWasntReady https://t.co/SrRA6FLzprâ€ðŸ˜±
— Raanthony Sanders (@rsand22) March 21, 2015
That is really random.

#10 MIKE ROWLEY
F, 6’8″, Junior; 3.8 ppg, 4.4 rpg
Rowley is from Sydney, Australia, one of two Aussies on the roster. His older brother Sam graduated from Albany in May and was one of the stars of last year’s team. Yeah, but did he ever play against Kentucky?! I think not. #TeamLittleSibling

#12 PETER HOOLEY
G, 6’4″, Senior; 13.7 ppg, 3 rpg
Hooley is the star, the one who made the game-winning shot to take the Great Danes to the NCAA Tournament last year. After which, he became a media darling, appearing on “SportsCenter” and even writing a column for The New York Post. Also an Australian, Hooley represented his country in the World University Games this summer. Hooley can not only shoot it from the outside, he can also kick it:

#43 GREIG STIRE
F, 6’7″, Sophomore; 2 ppg, 2 rpg
In addition to playing basketball, Stire is pretty talented with a pair of clippers, earning him the nickname “The Barber.” Yesterday, he gave out haircuts during Albany’s shoot around at Rupp.

Laugh if you want, but can you say you’ve had your hair cut at Rupp? Me neither.
HEAD COACH: Will Brown

Brown is an even 215-215 in his 15 seasons at UAlbany and was named America East Coach of the Year last season. I like his attitude going into tonight’s game:

About that 6 a.m. flight though…
Nothing like a 4am departure from campus and a player realizes at that point in time that he cannot find his ID. #Freshman

My older son making the trip to Lexington with me. He has only told me 20 times how tired he is. Alarm went off at 3:15am. #BoardingPlane

Hopefully Coach Brown will give us some #GoodMaterial after the game.
