KSR SOURCES: Detroit Mercy is out of UK’s Bluegrass Showcase due to COVID-19

One of Kentucky basketball’s opponents has pulled out of the Bluegrass Showcase this weekend.

According to KSR’s Matt Jones, Detroit Mercy is dealing with COVID-19 issues and has cancelled its appearance in the event.

“Source tells KSR that Detroit is out of the Kentucky Tournament this weekend due to COVID,” Jones tweeted.

Jones previously reported that a cancellation was on the table, though a final decision hadn’t been made.

Kentucky is currently scheduled to take on Morehead State on Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET and Richmond on Sunday at 1 p.m. The team’s matchup against Detroit Mercy was previously scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m.

UK head coach John Calipari said earlier today that all three teams were good to go for the Bluegrass Showcase as of right now, “but that’s today.”

“Yeah, I called Brad (Calipari) last night and asked when (Detroit Mercy is getting in),” Calipari said. “They’ve been good and they had another test yesterday. They’ll get it back today in Detroit. I’m hearing Morehead has been good and Richmond. So, it appears as though we’re good to go – but that’s today.”

Could UK find a new opponent to fill that spot on such short notice?

Tell us what will change in January? Absolutely nothing!!!! Just sideline the person that test positive and play on. This shouldn’t be this hard to figure out. The virus is here to stay, so we have to learn to live with it especially since it has a 99.6% recovery rate.

And what has changed in January, will be may before they able to vaccinate most people, soon the emergency workers and high risk will be but the healthiest will be toward may and I’m assuming that they are healthy unless they can bypass the protocols for dispersing which would probably cause uproar. It is what it is get as many games in as everyone can and have the tournament. It is what matters because if they play one game or a thousand,if no champion then what’s it for anyway.

If anyone gets (player, coach, manager, trainer) everyone has to quarantine for 14 days. I don’t understand why they’re doing that for basketball. Why can’t just the positive person sit out? They will never play at this rate.
