Kentucky’s Season Ends with 61-58 Loss to Kansas State in the Sweet 16

If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

Kansas State uglied up the game and Kentucky could not find enough points from the free throw line.  Barry Brown hit a layup with 19 seconds to play to end UK’s season with a disappointing 61-58 loss to K-State in the Sweet 16, a first for John Calipari at Kentucky.

Seriously. Would be considered a good year for a regular program. Can’t say I’m not disappointed, but definitely looking forward to next year.

But we aren’t a regular program. You sound like a liberal. If you really want to make a team better you have to be disappointed with the results and then work harder. You can’t just say, well this would have been a great year for a regular team. If you hold our program to that standard we won’t get any better.

Tough loss for the Cats. No sugar coating this one folks, it was just not our night. But god damn, I can not act like these refs didn’t play a factor as well. While this loss is easily preventable by making free throws, this isn’t the first time we were screwed out of a win by the refs. the sun will come up tomorrow.

More fouls called on K-state and they had 3 players foul out compared to our zero. I refuse to blame the refs tonight. Got outplayed and out coached. Simple as that.

I agree Drew. Most of the fouls they called on us were fouls. Know was stupid. Obvious offensive foul, lazyhalf hearted effort on a fast break where he hacked the guy, but not hard enough to stop the shot so it ends up being a three point play.

the burden is on Cal to prove whether or whether not a season like this is an outlier, and if it is not the people are already more than sick of this crap, multiple game losing streaks, players regressing as the season goes on, losing conference games at home, should not be happening

    Dear Coach Cal,

I have defended you non-stop and I truly believe you don’t get the credit you deserve for “coaching”. However, earlier this year after a close loss you stated “it was my fault for not calling a timeout, I can’t do that with this team”. Tonight, you did the same thing with about 8-10 seconds left on the clock. This was not why we lost. Poor shooting, that missed rebound at the end, terrible refs, and PJ’s free-throws have something to say about that, but your late-game decision making is terrible and could’ve changed the outcome of this game to a happier one.

I’m true blue always and still think you’re the right coach for the job, I just hope this improves. GO BIG BLUE!

      1:01 am March 23, 2018 Permalink

I defend him regularly but there are games it’s impossible. This is one of them. Pace – they dictated it. Timeouts? Why call them if you can’t draw a play and they can’t follow it, hell, just let the clock run and hope talent beats execution (spoiler alert: it doesn’t). Personnel? It’s the coach’s call but honestly, Nick needs contacts, he can’t see, and I can see that from Florida. He can’t catch. Rebounds – it’s a 4 guard team, how about some fundamentals: put – a – body – on – someone. And free throws? Sweet Mother of the Meadow they are FREE. 15 feet. 10 feet high. Every gym. We clearly don’t value it. We got luck with UVa losing and we shot ourselves in the foot, thigh, groin, and head… no excuse. He owns this one.

Turnovers at every crucial possession, couldn’t capitalize on our chances… Quades inexplicable shot with 7-8 seconds left and obviously the free throws… hard knowing we make 2-3 more of our 30 free throws and we win, but was a miracle we were even in that game. Not sure why Knox didn’t get the ball more the baseline screens clearly weren’t freeing him up much I don’t care if he comes to halfcourt to get the ball he needed to get more touches

PJ played great except for being a one man TO machine at the FT line. Knox slept through the tourney. Diallo went back to old Diallo. K. St. was no where near better than us, we handed them that game. At least Vanderbilt’s foot is okay. I am glad Shai NEVER pushed the ball up the court to get easy shots in transition, and WALKED it up every f’ing time and killed 10 seconds on the shot clock EVERY possession. Stupid play cost us this game.

I’ve watched UK games my whole life. From the time I was 3 years old, deployed in Afghanistan, and now in jersey. Cal lost us this game and I’m not a cal hater. Alexander and the whole team played at a slow pace, terrible play calling at end, and bad use of timeouts. Should have pummeled them by 10+. Rupp would’ve marched them back to the gym and had them shoot free throws until they couldn’t get their arms over their heads. It just wouldn’t happen again. There is no excuse for missing them like this. It’s 15 feet. 10 feet high. Same everywhere.

  39. Mc12
    12:38 am March 23, 2018 Permalink

I’m a diehard fan. I think this “positionless” mantra was a failure. You need players that fit roles and are skilled enough to get buckets. The one and done is a dilemma especially if recruiting classes have limited bigs or guards. In this case bigs and next year even more so. It creates an unfortunate machine. This team had a bad chemistry. Yes we made a small run. The bracket helped. However we were honestly a forgettable team in my opinion. Sometimes the stage is too much for a freshman or they are too immature. Quade will be nice to have next year but he wasn’t ready. Diallo is a very flawed player. Weber knew to cut the head off the snake. Sga was a dud and KSU made Knox battle. Our sets sucked and there was way too much standing around. Our bigs are soft. Pj battled but Lordy 8 of 20 I mean what do you do when no one else competes. Sga is not a distributor. Hopefully there is chemistry next year. Unfortunately the recruiting class is bad at the 4 5. pJ has a decent skill set. Wenyen is too sporadic. Idk. Whatever.

    • makeitstop
      12:47 am March 23, 2018 Permalink

Right – and 15 turnovers? No assists from anyone but SGA and one by Green. Standing and watching… Was Diallo even there? Wenyan? 27 minutes 3 points, 3 rebounds. That’s our energy guy? They thought they had this thing when UVa went out and it showed today. Forgettable season. Trend? Round of 32, Elite 8, Sweet 16. Sounds like Tubby years. Better convince some of these boys to come back, which is what you get paid to do Cal. You are not paid by the University of Hami and Nick. The guys who write the $7m check are at UK. You are supposed to be a “recruiter” but it doesn’t stop when you sign them. Keep them. Or next year will look like this year and this year wasn’t much fun. The natives are not happy.

Every smart commentator said we needed to score in the 70’s… and we looked like we didn’t care. Walked the ball up. We were out-rebounded on the offensive glass by a team with 4 guards, Think about that. “Length” “size” blahblahblah. I said the last two weeks w/o Vando we just suck on the glass – doesn’t matter if you hit but we couldn’t hit. Sure hope his foot is OK for the NBA workouts, Cal. I defend Cal most of the time but this is on him. He can’t shoot FT’s, true (apparently neither can PJ), but he can call TO’s and he can dictate the pace, he can do more that “watch” game film… and they clearly were not ready for this game despite having 5 days to prepare. 5 days to prepare for a team that just isn’t that good. I love the effort PJ gives but 8 of 20. Eight. No idea how many were front ends, but we gave away more points than I have ever seen. They got as far as I thought they would in January but their ending was not the best job Cal has done, it was the worst.

I agree, it’s hard being a UK fan right now. Our coach is great, until the end of close games. Vanderbilt should have played if he was 80% or better. Dialllo sprained his ankle and he played.

  41. Jiminy Crickets

The game winning basket for Kansas State was made when the tallest player on the floor for their team was 6 foot 2, he drove the lane and scored a layup on our defense. We then go down and shoot a wild contested shots from three, when we are down to two with eight seconds to go. That entire sequence was god awful. PJ missed so many FTs I felt sorry for him. 15TOs with 6assists.

I have not thought we were good all year but this game has to be Cals biggest choke yet. Getting the T was classic Cal

The freshmen did what freshmen do. The moment was too big for them and they panicked. We’ve seen this from Cal’s teams in the past. Off night shooting followed up by inability to hit free throws resulted in an early exit. Went to boys sweet 16 tournament last weekend and Cov Cath nailed their free throws….won the tournament as well.

  45. Lip Man 1
    12:40 am March 23, 2018 Permalink

Once again, brutal free throw shooting. More turnovers than assists. Seems to happen every year at least with the free throw shooting.

Cal refuses to learn that little things in close games ad up and talent doesn’t always overcome the little things.

Decent year. Not great…to much controversy for my taste, far to many injuries.

Next year team should be better… should only lose Alexander and Knox. (Would you take a chance on Diallo? Richards (who can’t play) or Vanderbilt (who can’t stay healthy?)

Baker and Herro should solve a big issue with outside shooting.

Like I said next year should be better, but we’ll see.

You mean little things like getting a technical because you and yourt giant ego can’t be constrained to teh coaching lane forcing us to take a three at the end instead of a 2? Little things like that?

Yes… but they would have FOULED him. We could literally have had anyone in there and they could have posted their guy up, but no, raise with 8 seconds to go. What?? And it wasn’t even a good shot!

Free throw shooting cost them big time. You can’t run your offense through a guy shooting free throws like that. The bracket will never open up like this again. Missed opportunity. And Vanderbilt! Man.

UK came out not feeling it. It happens, and UK was overdue. No one other than Washington shot well, and even he could not buy a FT. All the fouls (51 total!) destroyed the game continuity. Sooo many missed chances to win though. Hurts to lose that way, and I feel for the these kids. They hustled on defense.

Why did we miss so many free throws? Why didn’t we call a timeout? Why didn’t knox touch the ball the last 4 minutes? Why do refs suck? Shit happens, shit will always happen. Just get used to it and quit freaking out over stuff we have no control over. Good year, considering where we started.

It doesn’t matter what I think. But Cal got his a** outcoached tonight. I’m sick of OAD. You know were a “Players First” program. Cal will never win another title at UK.
The biggest night for our program happens a couple of months from now. Draft night is bigger than a Final 4 or a championship.
    S**t.

Bruce Weber is one of the worst coaches in America and he just took Cal to the woodshed. It was an embarrassing loss against a team that had no interior presence and could not consistently score. Knox needed to touch the ball more going down the stretch. While I love PJ Washington’s heart, he should not have been put on the line so much, I would like to know more about the technical foul. That sure did not help our situation. SGA has been a tremendous player all season, but tonight was not his night. We should have played the latest four minutes with a better plan for offense. This game was ours for the taking. How do you lose to a team that had only two interior players who both fouled out and gave them nothing. The only solace in this loss is that we will finally have a number of players returning next year and should have the most experienced team since the team that went 38-0. Hard not to be frustrated with Coach on this loss,

In February, there was No Way I thought this team was good enough to get in the tournament.
They made it this far. If they stayed together for next year, they would have a good shot at the ‘ship.
    That ain’t going to happen.
These kids better think long and hard about heading pro. If K State can beat you, like this, because you think they are physical? Dude, wait until you get to the pros. You got no clue.
I hope y’all come back, those that do not, thank you for your time here. Those that do, be ready to compete for the ‘ship.

Even the biggest Cal supporters can’t deny this was a choke. Cal got out coached (again) and he gets so emotionally into the game he can’t see what’s happening. Down 2 with KStates entire interior fouled out and we run no offensive play to score and shoot a 3 with 8 seconds left??? Their tallest guy was 6’2. If you make a 2, go to overtime they have NO chance with their foul trouble. Unbelievable

Its so painful because the final four was there for the taking. As easy a road as you could ever get and they blew it. Im trying very hard to remember the times of this season when I would have been happy with an sweet sixteen game but its hard when they played as well as any team in the country the last month, on top of how the dominoes fell in this tournament. I know they are kids and I know they tried but 8-20 from the free throw line by one guy is so hard to swallow. They also managed to turn the ball over on every possession that they had an opportunity to extend the lead to a multi-score game, literally ever time. But those free throws are glaring man.

Every team playing tonight and tomorrow is playing well. It’s a single elimination tournament. Anyone can win. Nothing was there for the taking. This wasn’t 2012 or 2015 UK. It was a team that make a lot of mistakes all season and made too many tonight.

Well I just heard Cal’s comments after the loss and he stated, wait for it, he should have called a timeout at the end to get a better shot. So frustrating to here him say that over and over. Cal, you need to practice making the timeout signal to anyone. You can do it!!!!!

I’m done with all these ridiculous uk fans that want to blame coach Cal or these young kids! The truth is we started to click late in the season but we never beat the top teams this year. The SEC was better but still lags behind more competitive conferences, just look at this tournament for proof. Some uk fans need to realize coach Cal is not Norman Dale calling up plays for Jimmy Chitwood. It’s not his style. These are young kids working hard to learn the game and they make mistakes! I’m a die-hard uk fan and will always be but calling people names especially these kids playing for us is pathetic and I’m sick of it!

Before the game and after the game I’m glad to be a UK fan. Calipari has brought more talent to the program than any coach before. Personally, I don’t like his offense but no coach is perfect. This team might have overachieved winning the SEC tournament and making the Sweet Sixteen. I don’t know. But there isn’t a coach I’d rather have. He gets UK and the program will struggle when he leaves. Enjoy this fans and make sure Calipari and the players enjoy it too.

Guy’s got a great record – 4 FF in 9 years and 6 Elite 8’s… but it’s kind of a disturbing trend. This year, as bad as they were, the field opened up and there’s no excuse – you get unlucky some years but this year he got lucky and failed to cash in. It’s like missing layups, it catches up with you.

    • UKinIN
      1:38 am March 23, 2018 Permalink

In the end the last few years have come down to recruiting. When Calipari loses his best players every year he has to bring in talent that is equal or better. This year he didn’t do that. Calipari has to have enough talent to overcome their youth.

Got to think everyone except Knox and SGA. I suppose Diallo might go too but have to imagine he would have dropped from where he likely would have been drafted had he left after last year just based on his combine. A more consistent showing next year would get him back in the lottery. Those second round picks aren’t guaranteed anything.

We will never have an easier path to a Final Four. We just couldn’t get it done. I blame it on the pace of the game, missed free-throw‘s, and our point guard inability to get past his defender. Kansas State played well above expectations, including the three point area. For whatever reason we pick the Sweet 16 game to regressed to prior habits. This sucks
