We’re halfway through Kentucky’s non-conference schedule and the Cats are 5-1, the only loss being the season-opener vs. Duke. We know the Blue Devils are legit, but what about the other teams Kentucky’s played?
Each week, we’ll share where Kentucky’s opponents rank in college basketball polls and metrics, including the NCAA’s NET Rankings, which debuted today to mixed reviews. First up, here’s where the Cats landed this week:
- AP Poll: 10
- Coaches Poll: 9
- Ken Pomeroy Ratings: 19
- Jeff Sagarin Ratings: 48
- NET Rankings: 61
- ESPN Basketball Power Index (BPI): 23
And their opponents:[table “199” not found /]
It’s still early in the season, so it’s best not to read too much into all of this, but there are still some interesting takeaways:
— The “best” team Kentucky’s beaten so far? Southern Illinois, followed by Winthrop. The “worst”? VMI, whom the Cats only beat by ten.
— Based on these ratings, Kentucky’s got one more cupcake before things get real. UNC Greensboro is a Top 70 opponent across the board, on par with Vanderbilt, and Seton Hall rates even higher. After being embarrassed by Duke, the Cats were able to lick their wounds at home against relatively easy competition; even then, they struggled at times. The training wheels are about to come off.
— I can’t take the NET rankings seriously yet. The NCAA really should have waited another month to release them.
— The five-game stretch of at Auburn, Mississippi State, Kansas, at Vandy, and at Florida will be absolutely brutal. If Kentucky wins three of those, it will be a huge, huge success.
Check back next Monday to see what’s changed.
