Kentucky’s opponents in the ratings: November 26

We’re halfway through Kentucky’s non-conference schedule and the Cats are 5-1, the only loss being the season-opener vs. Duke. We know the Blue Devils are legit, but what about the other teams Kentucky’s played?

Each week, we’ll share where Kentucky’s opponents rank in college basketball polls and metrics, including the NCAA’s NET Rankings, which debuted today to mixed reviews. First up, here’s where the Cats landed this week:

  • AP Poll: 10
  • Coaches Poll: 9
  • Ken Pomeroy Ratings: 19
  • Jeff Sagarin Ratings: 48
  • NET Rankings: 61
  • ESPN Basketball Power Index (BPI): 23

And their opponents:

It’s still early in the season, so it’s best not to read too much into all of this, but there are still some interesting takeaways:

— The “best” team Kentucky’s beaten so far? Southern Illinois, followed by Winthrop. The “worst”? VMI, whom the Cats only beat by ten.

— Based on these ratings, Kentucky’s got one more cupcake before things get real. UNC Greensboro is a Top 70 opponent across the board, on par with Vanderbilt, and Seton Hall rates even higher. After being embarrassed by Duke, the Cats were able to lick their wounds at home against relatively easy competition; even then, they struggled at times. The training wheels are about to come off.

— I can’t take the NET rankings seriously yet. The NCAA really should have waited another month to release them.

— The five-game stretch of at Auburn, Mississippi State, Kansas, at Vandy, and at Florida will be absolutely brutal. If Kentucky wins three of those, it will be a huge, huge success.

Check back next Monday to see what’s changed.

We better get it together and get it together quickly or it’s going to be a really long season. I don’t understand it because I truly believe the talent is there. Once again…defense, rim protector, ball movement, and take care of the ball.

I agree chris 43, we have the talent. I suspect that the talent has been compromised by Cal forcing the team to play a style of play that is within his comfort zone. As Cal makes adjustments, it would be worthwhile for him to look at himself.

I just can’t believe 3 out of any 5 games is good in my book. 4- good and 5-5 great job. Excluding the DUKE game, of course, I think we have just played down to our competition, for what ever reason. It I think from here on out we will start seeing a different bunch of Cats. These guys are putting in more work than ever and it’s getting ready to show. They will lose a couple more games, but once they start clicking, it’s on like a pot of neck bones. I can’t wait to see this team all year and watch their improvements, with every game. Thank you TT.

Traveling from Greensboro to Lexington this Friday to watch my wife’s alma mater take on the Cats. Looking forward to seeing the Cats take on a quality opponent in person!

We’ve been to one UNCG game so far this season. They have the size, speed, shooting and coaching to make it a good game. GO BIG BLUE!
