Kentucky’s comeback the third best in program history

© Ben Queen | USATSI

How impressive was Kentucky’s comeback tonight? According to Big Blue History, Kentucky’s rally from a 15-point halftime deficit is the third best in program history.

The only times the Cats have come back from a bigger halftime deficit was 16 down vs. LSU on February 15, 1994 and 16 down vs. #13 Louisville on December 18, 2004.

Unbelievable. Let’s be honest. At halftime, did you imagine this happening?

What about the 30 point comeback at LSU? Best comeback I have ever witnessed.

That’s the game they referenced. LSU was only up 16 at the half.

But down 30 in the second half, so halftime is misleading.

Yep, we were down 31 with about 15 minutes to play in the 2nd half. (Thought it was more than 16 at halftime, too, but maybe not.)

Yea. I thought it was 29. Why doesn’t it count? Because whoever looked it up only looked at halftime deficit ???.

I’ll be honest, I quit watching after halftime and didn’t come back until I checked the score and saw we had come all the way back. I regret my actions and I wholeheartedly apologize to the team for not believing in them. It definitely won’t happen again.

I think we all learned something tonight.

I kept watching and pretty much always do. In this particular game, anybody watching Knox even in the worst parts of this game should have seen a lot of hope for this team. He was playing gritty and physical from go and if he does that it opens everything up for him and for everybody else.

I had to watch. I had to see whether he is the guy who hangs around waiting for 3 pointers of if he is the guy that’s had enough of that.

This is hard to believe, considering the ’98 NC team was literally nicknamed “The Comeback Cats”, because they made a habit of getting down early in games, but usually managed to fight back and win…including all but 1 game in the NCAA tourney.

Problem here is equating largest halftime deficit with “best comeback.” It’s still meaningful, but the “best” comeback would have to consider time left in the game. That said, they were down 17 with 16:33 left which says even more.

Honestly I had zero faith. I wanted them to show some fight. I can’t believe such a young team fought so hard on the road down that much. This is the best win for Cal at UK period. Way to go Cal!

I was at the Elite 8 in ‘98 and I’d swear we were down 17 against Duke. With all due respect to the LSU game THAT was the best comeback I ever saw: against Duke to go to San Antonio…. where we won. Also down maybe 9-10 at half and came back against Utah in the finals… there, too. Comebacks against good teams away from home are more impressive and this was a big moment for this team… we hope.

I watched the reply of the second half I’ve 20 times. They made up the deficit in no time. I think a 3 by Evans, then a 3 by Padgett, then 4 when Sheppard was flagrantly fouled. And so on. After that it woman’s a nail bitter. Against DUKE.

Down by 10 to Duke at halftime in that game.

STILL waiting for Vando’s offense to come around and when it does that could make them a tough matchup for anyone. Hoping, not expecting, the best.

You don’t measure best come back by points down at half. The later in the game you are behind makes it better. And the stakes. In 1998 UK was down by 17 with 9:37 to go. We beat Duke then won the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

  19. Fat boy slim bob
    6:45 am January 28, 2018 Permalink

How do you rate being down 10 points during the 1998 Championship game? No team had ever come back and won in a national championship game when down by 10 at the half. We beat Rick Majerus’s Utah team. Now that was one of the best.

    • EdC
      10:26 am January 28, 2018 Permalink

To be fair we always beat Rick Majerus’ Utah team. I’ll take the Duke game in ’98 personally because I know how much it had to piss off ESPN, the tournament committee and the officials.

    • Fat boy slim bob
      1:24 pm January 28, 2018 Permalink

I agree the Duke comeback was better, but to do what had never been done in the National Championship game, to me out ranks a win at WV.

  20. notFromhere

    Agreed, EdC.

From that title year forward the officiating and seeding for UK in the tournament has always been suspect at best.

Says “halftime deficit” very clearly in the first paragraph, so that should tell you the subject of the “3rd best” comeback

  22. somerset bill
    4:06 pm January 28, 2018 Permalink

This is easily fixed. Just edit this headline to include “halftime deficit” and make a new post remembering the real “best comebacks in program history.”
