Kentucky wins with largest comeback in Calipari era

KSR-6041

Coming back from down 19 points to hot shooting Vanderbilt, Kentucky slowly chipped away at the lead and took the game in the final minutes, beating the Commodores, 73-67.

Malik Monk couldn’t find his shot through most of the game, but made two long balls when Kentucky needed them down the stretch, en route to his game-high 27 points.

Derek Willis, who also struggled with his shot, played a huge role in the win on the defensive end, of all places.

Get more numbers in the box score. We’ll be back with more postgame talk.

Knew they had that. They just wanted a 13 loss team feel important for a while. Monk and a bunch of average players.

“Knew they had that”? How many people live in your body? I read your post on the live blog.. you said UK was junk.
I still think you’d be happier rooting for another team…You sound like a Loosier or a UCon Wuskie to me.

Which calls would you say led to UK’s comeback? Were there no questionable calls that went in Vandy’s favor?

    • runningunnin.454
      11:36 pm February 28, 2017 Permalink

The refs had to whistle some make-up calls after Cal exploded on the no-call.
Plus we got the dribble with one hand and shove with the other from Vandy all night…not to mention their traveling every other trip up the floor.

Runningun nailed it. Refs owed Cal some make up calls after the missed call and T gave Vandy 4 points. They gave Bam 2 or 3 calls he would not normally get and he hit the freebees. So from that point it was pretty much a wash.

    • KYcats11
      7:11 am March 1, 2017 Permalink

That being said though, there were fouls. Bam just normally doesn’t get the calls like they gave him this time.

Great comeback. If we could play on the ball defense like that consistently we could make a run at 9!

Vandy is good. Once Drew gets some dynamic play makers to go along with those spot up shooters they will be formidable which is good for the SEC. Got to get some slashers though…

If you heard cal at half, he said one player was responsible for giving up 4 threes…that was Mulder he was talking about. He benched Fox, but went with Hawkins. The first half of this game, plus the Florida game= last we’ll see of mulder.

Again, we were outstanding in the last 8 minutes of a game. Generally speaking, the Sweet 16 & on are all decided by a few possessions. The way we’ve played in crunch time the last 3 games has been some good hard nosed basketball.

Now if you want to be negative, if we play as poorly as we have in the first 32 minutes of the last 3 games, we won’t have a chance to win in crunch time…and heck, we may not be even playing in the 2nd weekend. Can’t wait for it to play out!

Ditto. Haven’t ran that press at all this year that I recall. Vandy wasn’t ready for it. Big credit to Cal for having it in the bag of tricks.

  14. ukbradstith

Anybody else think Mulder needs more minutes after the last two games? Pitiful, pitiful defense and court awareness. At least he looked a little better on offense than he did against Florida.

    • JusSayin
      12:31 am March 1, 2017 Permalink

He shot well tonight but he still struggled on defense…and the last game he was 1/6 and also struggled on defense.

He should play but who do you take the minutes from. Hopefully the last couple games has ended the “sit Briscoe” theory.

    • TBW3011
      9:06 am March 1, 2017 Permalink

You play them based on in game performance that particular night. When Briscoe stinks sit him. When he doesn’t, don’t. It’s not that difficult really. And we need Fox to get it together. Better without him quite a bit lately and that can’t be the case to make a March run.

Even though Briscoe has been up and down of late, I thought he showed great heart and fight after he came back in from that injury. His put back rebound near the end of the game was huge. Say what you want about him, but this team needs his toughness

    Comeback Cats Part II?

  20. chris43
    9:14 am March 1, 2017 Permalink

Awesome comeback but we should never be down that much at home to a team like Vandy. Fox looked extremely rusty and didn’t play well. I still say that we need Monk as our #1 threat on offense. He needs to be given the green light and the rest of the team needs to jump on board and feed it to him. It kills us when Briscoe and Fox are in the game at the same time. They can’t shoot therefore the defense lags off so much it’d be tough for anyone to drive in and it kills the chance of any post game. If this team makes a run in the tourney they’ll need a huge showing from Monk along with Willis pounding the boards and being an outside threat as well as Mulder. Bam has been a beast the last few games let’s hope that continues. Good luck BIG BLUE! Let’s go raise some hell in the tourney!
