Kentucky is unranked for the first time since 2014

With two losses in its last two games, Kentucky is unranked in this week’s AP college basketball poll, as expected.

It marks the first time the AP poll has been Kentucky-less since the final regular season rankings of the 2013-14 season, when the Cats finished the year at 29-11 and 12-6 in conference play. Of course, that team went on to reach the title game in Aaron Harrison’s “great story.”

But back to the present, the updated poll has three SEC teams in Auburn (19), Florida (20) and Tennessee (22), plus a top-10 team ahead in West Virginia (7).

1 Villanova (63) 18-1 1,623
2 Virginia (1) 18-1 1,537
3 Purdue (1) 19-2 1,499
4 Duke 17-2 1,439
5 Kansas 16-3 1,338
6 Michigan State 17-3 1,243
7 West Virginia 16-3 1,217
8 Xavier 18-3 1,180
9 Cincinnati 17-2 1,087
10 North Carolina 16-4 1,014
11 Arizona 16-4 974
12 Oklahoma 14-4 917
13 Ohio State 17-4 787
14 Texas Tech 15-4 763
15 Gonzaga 17-4 610
16 Saint Mary’s 19-2 571
17 Wichita State 15-4 547
18 Clemson 16-3 474
19 Auburn 17-2 470
20 Florida 14-5 366
21 Arizona State 15-4 353
22 Tennessee 13-5 260
23 Nevada 18-3 190
24 Rhode Island 15-3 189
25 Michigan 17-5 123

Don’t panic.

Hopefully we can make a run like that team and start to close the gap on turnovers. If we start to protect the ball and can get 2 wins this week, we can get back on the right track and leave all the negativity in the past. Honestly, I just want the fan base back to normal! Its like we just lost our hall of fame coach, got caught paying strippers to dance in dorms and paid players or something. Oh wrong school…

Sorry but I just don’t see this team winning 2 games this week specially at WV. This team will do good to win at home against Miss State. You hold a live by the 3 die by the 3 to just 20% shooting from 3 point range and you still get beat, that says a lot about the heart and desire to win on this team. To many players worrying about looking good and cool instead of trying to win a ball game. Some people would rather look good and lose than look bad and win. Hope I’m wrong but unless there are some major changes this team will do good to win 5 more games this year.

To think that you can judge the heart of this team and your negativity says a lot about you.

Hopefully this, coupled with injured players returning lately will propel UK upward. However, they have to play to their strengths, which is clearly low-post basketball.

Can I just have someone explain to me how Arizona and UNC are consistently the first two four-loss teams (even when they had four losses two weeks ago!). In addition, can we all agree that Wichita State is the most overrated bunch of nothingness in poll history? They lose two in one week to teams that won’t even make the church league tourney and are STILL ranked? Please…

Yes. I agree. I’ve been thinking for a while that Wichita State was way overrated.

Rankings mean nothing right now, but to put things into perspective, which team has won the whole thing in the poll era without being ranked in mid January? IDK personally, but id say probably none. Not being ranked should sting this teams guts and hopefully get them into gut checking time!

I haven’t checked, but I would bet UConn in 2014 wasn’t ranked at this point. They were an 8 seed that year I think

I was thinking of that team as well Mathlete, but couldnt remember either. I know we thought if we beat Wisci that year it was gonna be an easy title win, boy did that game sting! James Young was the only one who brought it that game.

Shag, I still venture that some of that UConn loss can be put on Rex’s tweet that went out right before the game. They just didn’t look like the same team. That, and I think Randle was hurt. I remember seeing him limping and grimacing right before the game.

    • Shagaris Sock Puppet
      2:11 pm January 22, 2018 Permalink

I dont want to put it on Rex, but that was a bad look at the time. I remember Matt always telling the story of how he saw Julius Randles body language before the game and always said he didnt look like the same guy he saw confident pregame all year. He said a few of them had that scared look to their face. That could be true, but thats where Freshmen can hurt you! Lack of experience for a certain occasion. But thats the exception right there! This isnt the norm of past, the game is evolving before our eyes and young teams can blossom quicker than an experience laden team that just isnt good enough or athletically gifted. When you have a team as young as UKs this year, there is no comparison to say this is what they are because theres never been a freshmen led team this young before. Some guys might spark quicker and some might take a while to just get it and whatever it is. So who knows what this particular group will do come end of Feb.THey have the talent, its just a matter of how well can that talent get in a matter of a few weeks!

Yeah rankings are worthless. Id rather be a 10 seed ranked 40th at ths end of the year then be #1 overall seed. You put that into great perspective

2011, 2013, 2014, 2018 were all unranked at some point. That’s 4 out of 9 teams under Cal to have started season ranked in top 10 to go unranked in same season. That being said 2 of the previous 3 teams went to Final Four, the other of course went to NIT

    • Mathlete

…and 2013 lost their best player (Nerlens) and their original PG wasn’t up to the job. Maybe we all just agree to pretend that whole season didn’t happen (kind of like Louisville’s record books will!)

Cool with me. Rather be underrated than overrated at this point. Hopefully it adds some fuel to the low burning fire these guys have lol

  10. trumpetguy

Be honest, take UK off the front of the jerseys and does this team look like a top 25-30 team? Does it pass the “eye test”, NO, but it does pass the “I” test. As I thought, UK will have as many, if not more TOs than assists, cannot win that way! Their apparent go-to-guy, Knox, is now shooting UNDER 30% on 3s, will soon likely pass everybody in TOs, including the two guys who do most of the ball handling. He has FEWER rebounds than Gabriel, despite having played 200+ more minutes, and struggles big time defensively. He for sure isn’t the main reason for the struggles, nor the only reason, but even the casual fan can recognize the teams overall talent just isn’t there. Unless they can repeat the non-conference schedule again, and obviously they can’t, then 4-5-6 game winning streaks probably aren’t going to happen, especially in March. We will continue to watch and continue to root for them, but most of us don’t share the optimism of Cal!

    • runningunnin.454
      1:43 pm January 22, 2018 Permalink

Maybe they’ll all be back; none are nba ready. Diallo at present has no skill set, and Knox is not tough enough to play in the league as yet. Everybody should come back after this year.

You make great points, really really good basketball knowledge, but to Cals credit, come on man, do you think hes really going to throw them under the bus? The game and everything that comes with this is all mental. You cant mentally destroy these young guys and if he did, then yea, the season is basically a wash and he cant get their brains to focus on getting better, which is his job. Its frustrating no doubt, but we are going to be around next year and the year after and if these guys are ever going to get better, they will have to start growing their confidence. They dont need us telling them what they already know and Cal and staff have already told them. Thats the die by the sword mentality of the one and done. It could be good, or it can get real ugly pretty fast and you just have to live with the ugly side before it always gets better. Its got a good track record of getting better, with the NIT exception and losing Nerlens, they have always gotten better come March.

SSP you have to get off this site. Too much rational thought in your comment. It’s mind boggling how a portion of this fan base insists on teetering on the brink of mental breakdown after some misfortune on the court or the recruiting trail. It’s embarrassing.

I don’t expect them to win at Morgantown. BUT to play well and pull the upset would be a big confidence booster. I’m not ready to give up on them yet

BallDontLie I see what you did there lol. You’re right, so many people on here just freak out or they dont have a lick of patience or rational thought process so they spew negativity, it is embarrassing. I listen to some of the other talk radio teams stations( cause I love sports knowledge) and honestly other teams are laughing at how are fans act towards not only referees, but 16-19 year old kids! Since 2000, besides UCONN and Duke, no one has won more than 1 title. We have 1!!! Its not like teams are ripping consecutive title runs off. These things are hard to come by. It took 2 hall of fame coaches that been doing it 15 plus years to get more than 1 in that time frame. Give Cal his time, and just enjoy the ride folks.

We haven’t played like a top 25 team so no surprise. And I’m fearful we will lose 3 of the next 5. Hopefully we still make it to the dance and not end up in NIT

Everyone needs a chill pill. This team will get it together. Last year’s team had two losses in a row at some point. We will win some big ones at the end and be a 6-7 seed and play a 11 or 10 seed from a power 5 conference to start which if prefer over a 5 seed and have a tough 12 from a small little conference who killed it (likely WKU knowing the committee).

Furthermore, if you look at the votes we barely dropped out. We are “ranked” 26. A strong win over Miss St tomorrow and a couple wins next week put us back in. Not much hope for WVU but this may have been exactly what they needed

Wrong for the AP poll which is the topic. Miami #26, LOUISVILLE #27, ??#28 and UK#29. No wins against A ranked team. MSU isn’t a quality win. WVU will be a telling game… might not like what we see…
