Kentucky Takes Down Tennessee 77-64 to Snap Four-Game Losing Streak in Knoxville

Randy Sartin | USA Today

Randy Sartin | USA Today

Kentucky took an early lead and hung on to beat Tennessee 77-64, the Wildcats’ first win in Knoxville since 2015.

For 40 minutes UK led by about eight points, taking a lead 2:30 minutes into the game and never letting go. A pair of long threes by Santiago Vescovi cut the UK lead to four with just over eight minutes to play. Once UK ended the scoring drought, the game never got any closer, cruising down the stretch to a double-digit victory.

Four Wildcats scored more than 13 points. Johnny Juzang knocked down all three of his three-point attempts to score a career-high 13 points. Immanuel Quickley led all scorers with 18 points, Tyrese Maxey scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half and Nick Richards chipped in 15 points and 7 rebounds.

Kentucky improves to 18-5 on the season and 8-2 in conference play to put UK in a three-way tie at the top of the SEC standings.

Five players in double figures today. Solid win 4ever..

There is nothing to hate but this is not a great win. Of course winning on the road is always better than losing anywhere. But we struggled against a bad team missing a player that is their best three point shooter and we still giving up too many offense of rebounds. So we beat a team with no chance at the tournament. This team, and coach, can’t beat four decent, not even good, teams which they will have to do to win the title. Makes no sense to have the better talent and better athletes to be yelling slow down with two minutes to go in the first half. One would think with the better players you want more possessions so their talent can dominate. Coach to win titles not draft picks. Of course we’re going to end up with a good record the SEC is terrible and no team has a title chance

Nice win. Controlled the whole game. I bet our resident Irrational Cal Haters Club is so mad.

What a game for Johnny Juzang! Proud of him & Keion today off the bench. Ej & Ashton were overall disappointing. Maxey, Quickley, & Richards all had solid games as well. Wasn’t necessarily pretty, but it’s something we haven’t done since 2015. Nice to finally get a W down there.

EJ did things other than scoring, he had 3 blocks, 2 steals, 2 assists and 3 rebounds. He played pretty good defense as well. Ashton had a few moments but he just needs to get better at not turning the ball over, he did hit all his free throws and had 4 rebounds and 3 assists, could’ve had more assists had he not made bad passes, etc.

Yes EJ played solid d & put up some other numbers but we need the kid to find a way to get us 8-10 points a game. And Hagans would be perfectly fine if he could just limit his turnovers to no more that 2 a game.

I know it can’t just be me, but I absolutely detest just letting the shot clock rung out at the end. It’s FRIGGIN Tennessee! Cram it down they’re throats Cal!!!!

Cal and Barnes are pretty close friends. classy move, IMO. We got them with a couple loud GBB chants in their place to rub it in, so I’m good with that.

Tacking on meaningless points at the end of a game started a fight between Memphis/Knicks couple weeks ago. Blocking a meaningless shot at the final horn started a fight at KU/KState game couple weeks ago. Take the win, appreciate it, and move on to next game. No need to squeeze a final drop out of a depleted orange.

I am loving the free throw shooting by this team! In years past, we may have lost a game like today due to poor free throw shooting. Hopefully they can keep it up come tourney time

Poor Sestina only had 1 rebound today & that was it for his stat line. I honestly thought he would be more of a factor for this team, especially with Brooks & Montgomery not producing as much as we’d hoped or expected.

I wanted Auburn to lose because of my dislike for Pearl, but they actually did us a favor by outlasting LSU. Three way tie. We are in control of our destiny.

Side note for anyone who says Kentucky isn’t the super bowl for whoever we play. Auburn had LSU, at the time the leader of the SEC, in their place today and it was like a museum compared to the UK game. Quiet and nowhere near the same level of fan involvement. Kentucky is going to get the best of any team we play, whether it’s Vandy or Kansas.

If Kentucky had taken the ball inside to Richards from the beginning and drawn those fouls on Fullerton this game would have been over by halftime. Thankfully Payne made that adjustment in the second half.

Well Cal Lovers Wolfpack your hero coach finally won a game at Knoxville. Even though your hero coach won today, there is a reason that UK is not 1 of the top 16 seeds according to the NCAA Selection Committee before the game today.

In Cal We Trust It’s NBA or Bust!

Your worst nightmare is Kentucky getting under seeded and getting an easier ride to the final four. Better line up extra anti-depressants from your Psycho doc ahead of time.

Again with your obsession with Cal? Dude, that’s not healthy. For starters, he’s way out of your league. He’s also happily married bro, give it up man, he’s just not gonna run away with you. He only sees you as a friend.

So proud of Johnny. The kid never hung his head as he struggled early on in the season but just kept working hard and keeping a positive attitude. Great lesson for youngsters who struggle to adjust to the college game. Johnny apparently has good positive support from family back home.

I agree. I think he will add significantly to the team as he continues to gain experience and confidence. What was he today, 3/3 from 3-point land?

I contend TN is our biggest rival, Over the years they given UK football/basketball/hoops teams fits. Look at the overall records. I can remember all kinds of ways we have lost to TN, some inexplicable. GOOD WIN GUYS!

Righteous, you don’t know sh** about basketball, do you? If you think this is the same team that lost to Evansville then you’re delusional. This team keeps showing signs of improvement unlike that team down the road whose record is bolstered by a terribly watered down ACC. You’ll be out of the tourney by the Sweet 16.
