Kentucky Survives Second Half Scare to Defeat Davidson 78-73

Davidson did enough in the second half to make it close, until the Kentucky Wildcats overpowered the opponent to pull away with a 78-73 first round NCAA Tournament victory.

Kentucky took a ten-point halftime lead into the locker room after Davidson made just 3-of-15 three-pointers in the first half.  Davidson’s three-point drought did not last.  Jon Gudmundsson knocked down six second half threes to tie it with 7:41 to play.  After a tense four minutes, Kentucky responded with a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach for good.

For the first time in 1,047 games, Kentucky did not hit a three.  The Streak was snapped, but the Cats still found a way to win.

Good thing Cal has players. Boy was he confused offensively and defensively. Gonna need a miracle win by Buffalo to advance.

Well, after watching Buffalo absolutely throttle Arizona, it’s apparent that we may need our best effort in order to get by Buffalo. They are legit!

Unpopular Opinion: I’m glad the streak is dead. I’m tired of hearing about it every time we are having a bad game.

Agree agree…..massive advantage inside with tonight’s game—no way I saw Cats taking double digit 3’s unless they were behind……Hail Mary 3 at the end crushed a lot of bettors

I thought he was gonna do something good and get a dunk but that perfect lob hit his frying pan hands and fell straight to the ground. He is just not good. He has size and that’s absolutely it.

It sucks to see the 3pt. streak end, but we likely lose this game if we jacked up more than we did. Cal knew they couldn’t stop us inside, and made damn sure the team didn’t get suckered into a 3pt contest.

    • JusSayin
      9:30 pm March 15, 2018 Permalink

This is the right take. There are seriously some fans on twitter acting like we should have jacked up a bunch of threes when we scoring at will inside in a close game.

I missed most of the game. Saw the last 15 minutes of the 2nd half. Thought the UK shot selection from outside left a lot to be desired. We had NO ONE underneath. We ruled on the defensive boards but they got us on the Offensive boards which kept them in the game.

    • runningunnin.454
      9:38 pm March 15, 2018 Permalink

Yep, that 3pt streak was the dumbest stat there every was…meaningless. Davidson hit a bunch of threes…and lost.

Let this be a “wake up call” for Cal.
These smart players that can can shoot and stay for four years have a place on the big stage. (Hey, maybe even at Kentucky)
Guess he learned nothing from Wisconsin.

SFA is in the tournament perennially lately. Their mascot is the Lumberjacks, and at least a couple of years ago the team sported some pretty glorious beards. They play a similar kind of havoc defense to WVU and are generally a fun bunch to follow in March. They have potential to make some noise most years

They hit free throws and they didn’t turn the ball over. Little things win games.

10 turnovers is not turning it over?

    • CATandMONKEY
      12:24 am March 16, 2018 Permalink

10 turnovers per game is exactly how many Cal would prefer. He has said previously that much more than 10 is evidence of sloppy ball handling and bad decisions. Much less than 10 is indicative of not pushing the ball enough.

    • Cals Hoverboard
      10:05 am March 16, 2018 Permalink

The games stats showed that turnovers and free throw percentages were about the same. When you say “they” didn’t turn the ball over and made their free throws, are you referring to the smart and experienced Davidson Wildcats or our young and inexperienced one and done Wildcats? Hard to tell Lippy. I guess we don’t stand a chance against Buffalo now that they knocked off the other Wildcats that we didn’t stand a chance against. smh

Sexton with 2 fouls and out of the game with 12 minutes left the 1st half. If ESPN loses Trae Young and Sexton in the same day, they’ll have apoplexy.

  18. Sorry to be Debbie Downer here, but I don’t see us having a shot at AZ if we don’t have Jarred back. Maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll get Buffaloed.

    Anyway, we won. CATS!!!

I wish we would stop leaving our man to double the ball ( unless they have a superstar in the paint).
One pass, zip and there’s an open three shooter.
Rupp number one rule…don’t leave your man.
