Kentucky survives a tough test in Starkville, beats the Bulldogs 88-81

It’s hard to believe that at one point in the second half, Kentucky led this game by 18. Thanks to horrible officiating and some baffling decisions by the Cats on both sides of the ball, this one was a lot closer than we all wished it would be; however, Kentucky pulled away at the end, beating Mississippi State by a final score of 88-81.

De’Aaron Fox led the way with 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, and while Monk was the next highest scorer with 14 points, he also had five turnovers in easily his worst game as a Cat. For the second game in a row, Wenyen Gabriel looked like the MVP, coming just shy of a double double with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 assists and 1 steal.

The game was ugly, and everyone will be talking about the scuffle between the two sides following a foul on De’Aaron Fox. I’ll have footage of that in just a minute, but for now, just be thankful we escaped Starkville with a win.

The officiating was so terrible I think it gave me an aneurysm

We need to get a Go Fund Me account for the SEC to hire some real officials. I LOVE watching basketball but SEC officials are making it boring to watch the 2nd highest scoring team in the nation. A team that every single announcer lauds how fast they are, how polished on the break.

I wish we could play those classless punks in Rupp this year. They really need to take a 30+ point loss which this one should have been if the officials hadn’t killed the flow yet again.

The one thing I am thinking is that ultimately maybe this attempt to slow UK down with officiating will help us in the post season. Lots more 1/2 court practice than we would have gotten otherwise.

Lastly Mussberger might be worse than Vitale. He sounds like somebody just kicked his puppy every time UK did anything good and like he just GOT a new puppy every time Miss. St. did.

I think you’re reading way too much into Mussberger’s call. And UK is Vitale’s 3rd favorite team. It’s hard to really complain about that. You should let go of the hate in your heart. You’ll live better and longer.

Mushbarger (I refuse to pronounce his name correctly until he starts pronouncing player names correctly) needs to hang it up. His own broadcast partner kept trying to subtly correct him on how to say Bam’s name and he just wasn’t getting it

At this point there’s no excuse either, he’s called like 5 UK games this season. He should know these guys by their faces without even having to check his program notes

Cats challenged nobody at the rim the entire game. Naturally, Howland told his guys ‘take it to the rim every possession’. 47 second half points.
Northwestern State held MSU to 28 1st half, 31 2nd half

We struggle at the Hump because no one wants to go to Starkville to watch a game…. or for any other reason for that matter. Officiating may have been terrible on both sides of the ball but without the refs interfering with the flow of the game, no chance the game ends that close.
Also, another overrated chant/another win. Hope Miss State fans enjoyed watching that tenth straight L as much as they enjoy tractor pulls.

You all do understand that when the play was flowing, which was not often but did happen a few times, MSU actually made runs including an 11-0 run in 2nd half. MSU played this game with the same refs and had more fouls. This team is not close to a title contending team because of defense. Over 50 points in the paint this evening by a team that lost at home to Bama, East Tenn State and Lehigh. Was also blown out by 25 on neutral by UCF. The refs calling all those moving picks, some were some were not, helped us since we defend it poorly.

It was nauseating, the officiating. Can’t someone do something about it? Nevertheless, it was a win on the road and another team loses their super bowl game

Worst officiating I have ever seen at the college level or maybe any level.

BOTH teams had multiple ??? calls, BUT, UK clearly thought game was over early in the 2nd half. Lazy passes, telegraphed, lackadaisical (sp??) ball handling, and MM#5 had a couple jump shots at least partially blocked. Unless shot clock is a factor, and it wasn’t, those are rarely going in when that closely contested. MSU isn’t much but we won…about the only + thing in the whole night. I agree with “catsarerunnin”, may very well be the worst officiated game I’ve ever seen. BOTH teams have legit beefs with stripes.

The announcer….”not a fan of the over-rated chant when you’re losing”.
Have to agree….I think the SEC ball teams are better than their dumba$$ fans.

Wonder why this is a thing this year, MSU never led and yet they bring out the overrated chant? C’mon.

    Central Florida by 25
East TN state by 4 or 5

When UK comes to town, it’s every team’s super bowl; they play nine miles over their head. The team we played tonight was not the same team that lost to Lehigh, UCF, or ETSU. MSU is every talented, albiet, very young.
You told us all day how lousy the SEC is…until you learn the game, listen to the rest of us that tell you every road game in the SEC can be tough…and you can lose.

SEC referees just suk; any conference team that gets to post-season won’t be able to take the contact…they’ll play very soft, and won’t know what is a foul, and what is not.

Looks like the fifth player has asserted himself. What a game by Gabriel – a budding stretch 4 and rim protector!

Now it’s time to raise the defensive teamwork of that starting five and raise the game of the 8th/9th man (Humphries) to round this team into shape by tourney time.

The upcoming stretch is starting to look serious – USC, a UT trap game, KU then time to go to The Swamp. Hoping for five wins!

UT has played some very good teams close; and Florida has only lost to three teams….Gonzaga, Duke, and Florida State, three top ten teams (at the time).

Side note and I bet I’m not the only one picking up on this, but Cal habitually screaming at guys is starting to wear on them. Shrugged shoulders and guys rolling their eyes at what they consider to be non stop “coaching/tongue lashing” is usually not a good sign, especially with only about 1/2 the season completed and a long way to go. Just a thought………

I did notice it. Reminds me of a few years ago when he was on their case so non-stop and so venomously that him getting kicked out of a game and them playing far better when he was kicked out to make him realize he was over the line. Both Briscoe and Monk seem to really have had enough of always being wrong.

BTW it is a tough line to walk from the early season where he wasn’t on them at all and disciplined play was a problem. Hopefully not swinging too far the other direction.

Just another night in the SEC. The worst officials in the nation. Get used to it. This happens EVERY game on the road. The league does not want UK to blow out anybody on their court. It’s been this way for a couple of decades.

Still unsure about this team. The defense is not championship caliber. The Kansas game will be a good meter
