John Calipari and the UK coaching staff continue to ramp up communication with 2021 five-star guard Kennedy Chandler.

According to Jake Weingarten of, Calipari spoke with Chandler – the No. 14 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite Rankings – on Thursday.

Back in April, the five-star guard trimmed his list to five, with Duke, Kentucky, Memphis, North Carolina, and Tennessee all making the final cut.

According to Chandler, his final decision will come from this list at a later date.

“It was a really tough decision because I had a really strong list of 10 schools, but, at the end of the day, I felt like these five schools were the best options for me,” Chandler said in a recent Sports Illustrated blog post. “It made it tougher to cut the list just with all of the quarantining we’re all going through right now. I just felt like it was important to have a smaller list to concentrate on. I can definitely feel the difference already. It’s a lot easier when you have less texts and phone calls to make. I won’t have another cut to my list or anything like that; I’ll pick my school from this list.”

Back in February, Chandler joined KSR’s Sources Say Podcast to discuss his interest in the Kentucky program and his recent unofficial visit to Lexington, where he met former UK star John Wall.

What were your initial takeaways with your visit to Lexington? What did you enjoy most about it?

I had a great time when I went down there. It was my second time for me going [to Lexington], I went last year when Kentucky played Tennessee. Me going again, I just had a really fun time down there and it was a great game.

What is the Kentucky coaching staff’s main recruiting pitch to you and your family?

They feel like I’m a good fit in a solid program. They feel the way they play is the style of basketball I play.

As the No. 1 point guard in your own class, what was it like to have former Kentucky superstar John Wall in attendance? What conversations did the two of you have together?

Yeah, I met with him as soon as I got to [Rupp Arena] before the game started. He just told me about the program, John Calipari, and how you have to fight for your position at Kentucky. There are no guaranteed positions. You go hard in practice and you’re going to get better every day in practice. He just told me that Kentucky is a school I should be at [when I make a decision].

What is it like to have players around the program like John Wall be there to help during the recruiting process? Is joining that “family” something that interests you about Kentucky?

It shows me that Kentucky is a great school to be at. The stuff John Wall told me really made it feel like it would be a good fit and a good school for somebody like me to be at. I’m glad we had a good talk.

Your dad mentioned to [the Sources Say Podcast] that you’re interested in teaming up with 2021 top-ten prospects Paolo Banchero and Jaden Hardy about possibly teaming up in college. What attracts you to playing with those guys in particular?

Oh man, if that ever happened, I feel like that would be a great team to play with. Me, Jaden [Hardy], and Paolo [Banchero], man. I played with both of them at USA [Basketball Camp], so I feel that we have a good connection. If that happens, that would be phenomenal.

It’s a sad state of affairs when a coach simply talking to a recruit with nothing about a commitment, possible announcement date, etc., is “news.”

I’m sorry…that was harsh. I guess i’m just a little surly because I really need some other sports besides Korean baseball.

It’s okay, this quarantine has everyone in a bad mood. Just have a couple of drinks or smoke some Cheeba, and maybe bang some knuckles.

And when are Memphis and Tennessee going to go away? Penny’s miserable failure this past season has to have a negative impact and shorten that experiment and Tennessee can only get so much mileage out of Grant Williams, Admiral Schofield et al.

Kid lives in Memphis—both UT and Memphis are located in Tenn. I believe Ky is a hat on the table and he ends up at UT but Fed-X is a formidable opppnent, so Penny can’t be counted out yet.
